227 Squadron spent most of the war as an anti-shipping and maritime reconnaissance squadron equipped with Beaufighters operating in the Mediterranean area. The squadron reformed in November 1944 at RAF Bardney in 5 Group equipped with Lancasters. The squadron quickly moved to RAF Balderton until April 1945 when it moved to RAF Strubby for the last weeks of the war and from where it took part in Operation Exodus, the repatriation of ex-prisoners of war.
