When construction started in October 1942 the station was originally intended for 2 Group and subsequently 3 Group. However by December 1943 it was in 100 Group and the first unit to arrive was 199 Squadron in May 1944. The squadron operated Stirlings in a radio counter-measures role in support of Bomber Command operations. In September 1944 171 Squadron formed at the station in the same role and also with Stirlings. Both squadrons converted to Halifaxes; 171 Squadron in late 1944 and 199 Squadron in March 1945.
