The station opened in 1937 in Fighter Command and was a Sector Station during the Battle of Britain flying Hurricanes and Spitfires. In 1942 the station was transferred to the United States Army Air Force. P-47s and P-51s operated from the station until the end of the war, often escorting B-24s and B-17s on daylight bombing operations. Post war the station reverted to RAF control until 1975 when it transferred to the Army and is now known as Carver Barracks.
