The site was the location of the Blackburn Aeroplane Company established in 1916. During the early years of manufacture the company built seaplanes, hence the location on the Humber Estuary. During the inter war years the site was also used for reserve flying training for the RAF. During World War Two 4 Elementary Flying Training School used the site with Tiger Moths. The Blackburn Botha and Barracuda were also manufactured on the Brough site during the war.
