During World War One the airfield was known as Spittlegate and the RAF station was constructed and opened in 1922. In 1928 it was given the name RAF Grantham and continued its training role with Tiger Moths being used in the 1930s. At the start of World War Two it was being used by 12 Service Flying Training School which in April 1942 was renamed 12 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, operating Blenheims, Ansons and Oxfords. Other training units, Beam Approach flights and Communications Flights also used the station. The station was renamed RAF Spitalgate in 1942. The RAF station closed in 1975 and the site is now an Army barracks.
