The original airfield opened in 1915 and it is the oldest RAF station in continuous use. It was the first station to use the Hurricane and it played a significant role during the Battle of Britain, notably 303 Polish Squadron. Later the station was used by Spitfires. A photographic reconnaissance unit with Mosquitos and Wellingtons also used the station. Additionally the station was used by Ferry Command, later Transport Command. Post war use of the station was shared with civil flights whilst Heathrow Airport was developed. RAF Northolt has a long history of VIP and Royal flights and civilian flights continue to use the station.
