The station was used during World War One and subsequently was the base for the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental establishment which tested many aircraft types and their equipment. In 1939 the station was transferred to Fighter Command and used by Hurricanes, Spitfires and Typhoons. With its proximity to the coast the station was also used in 1941 for air-sea rescue with Lysander and Walrus aircraft. In 1943 RAF Martlesham Heath transferred to the United States American Air Force from where they flew P-47s and P-51s for the remainder of the war.
