Essen last night

IN GREAT FORCE

R.A.F. bombers in very great strength battered the great arms centre of Essen, home of Krupps, last night.

More bombers raided Berlin.

Heavies roared out from England for an hour just before dusk, and later more crossed the South-East Coast.

Essen, only 45 miles beyond the Rhine, is an important communications centre serving the front. The R.A.F. last bombed it on April 26 with 2,000 tons.

Previously this city of 500,000 people had been attacked with 9,000 tons, and one-fifth of it was estimated to be destroyed.

The Krupp works themselves are the size of a city, covering many acres.

Berlin was last raided on October 11, by Mosquitos.
