Many thousands of Africans and several hundreds of Europeans attended the Victory in Europe Thanksgiving Service held on the Race Course at Lagos, Nigeria. The Right Rev. L.G. Vining, Bishop of Lagos officiated, assisted by Ministers of the Lagos Churches.

His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government, Sir Gerald Whitely accompanied by the Aide-de-Camp, attended the Service and later received the salute at the March Past of Units of the Army, Navy, R.A.F., Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and Schoolchildren.
