Blohm Und Voss BV 142.
The success that attended the initial trial flights of the BV 139 long range flying boat in 1937 prompted Blohm Und Voss to evolve a land based version of the basic design. Intended for the role of long range mail plane capable of operating over a distance of up to 2735 miles, the land plane was of all metal construction. The aircraft carried a crew of four & the floats were replaced with hydraulically operated rearward retracting main wheels. The first prototype flew on October 11th 1938. Shortly after the outbreak of war the idea of adapting the aircraft for the long range maritime & strategic reconnaisance [sic] tasks was conceived. As the BV142 was intended to operate far outside the range of fighter protection emphasis was placed on defensive armament & the crew was increased to six. The aircraft were used in the invasion of Denmark & Norway but operationally they were limited by vulnerability & poor performance when carrying a bomb load, & by 1942 they had been withdrawn from service. Powered by four BMW 132H-1 nine cylinder radial engines.
