Arado AR 240.

Early in 1938 Arado initiated studies for a highly sophisticated multi-purpose aircraft. The companies [sic] final proposal submitted in early 1939 took advantage of the very latest developments in aeronautical technology, & was basically a highly loaded tandem two seater of all metal construction with pressurised accommodation for the crew. The gun barbettes were remotely controlled, high lift devices in the form of automatic leading edge slats & double slotted trailing edge flaps, & a radical form of dive brake working in a similar fashion to a parachute & acting as a tail cone when closed. A series of prototypes were built for reconnaisance [sic], dive-bombing- strategic bombing, heavy fighter & night fighter purposes. The aircraft suffered from teething troubles & in December 1942 Edward Milch cancelled the programme. Aircraft already built were issued to the Luftwaffe. Powered by two Daimler-Benz DB 601E 12 cylinder liquid cooled engines of 1175 hp. Armed with four 7.9 mm MG81 machine guns. Max speed 384 mph. Ceiling 34,450 feet.
