222 Squadron was a day fighter squadron in Fighter Command until June 1944 when it transferred to the Second Tactical Air Force as part of the Normandy Campaign. The squadron was initially equipped with Blenheims but operated Spitfires from March 1940 to December 1944 when it converted to Tempests.
