OUTFITS FIRST-AID
Personal Pack For Aircrews

Every member of an aircrew going into action should carry with him one of the above outfits, which is to be obtained from the Unit Medical Officer.

The outfit, in which there is a pair of anti-burn gloves, is in the form of a neat little pack which should be carried either in the pocket of the “Mae West” waistcoat (if worn or in the Middle East type of parachute pack, in which a pace has been reserved for the outfit. The main thing is for every member of an aircrew to carry his own first-aid pack on his person, because even though certain aircraft has stored away a first-class first aid outfit, the crew abandoning an aircraft often, for obvious reasons, abandon the first-aid outfit with it.

On examining the pack, except for the introduction of a pair of oiled silk burns’ gloves for the first time in any first-aid outfit, there would appear to be little that is remarkable in the design. But a great deal of thought has been given to the construction of the whole with a view to securing its efficient performance under the stresses it is likely to meet.

For instance, those requiring to use the pack will need to get the contents in a matter of seconds. Therefore, the outer covering, which is waterproof, has been cut on the bias, and with a tiny slit at each corner the whole pack can be ripped open diagonally in a moment.

It is equally important that the contents should not be damaged by fire. Therefore, the cover is “flashproof” and non-inflammable. This means that flame of passing intensity will not fire it.

CONTENTS

First principle in the first-aid treatment of burns is to exclude the air from the exposed surface. A pair of oiled-silk gloves containing and antiseptic powder is the chief feature of the contents. These are folded flat and each glove is packed with directions for use attached.

In use, they fasten at the wrist by means of a strip of bandage material tipped with adhesive plaster. One of the principle features of the glove is that the character of the material and the design of the glove does enable the hands to be used while affording first-aid protection.

For burns, other than the hands, is included a tube of anti-burn jelly. Two ampoules of morphia, a large wound dressing and a safety-pin complete the contents.

[Italics] Method of use for Morphia. [/Italics] Unwind metal strip. Remove glass hood. Press stylet (wire in needle0 down until it punctures top of capsule. Remove stylet. Hold syringe needle upwards and press capsule until a bead of moisture appears at the top of the needle. Insert needle beneath skin obliquely in arm or leg and empty contents by squeezing capsule. Give contents of one ampule only.

The morphia is for use in case of SEVERE injuries or pain.

The whole outfit has been subjected to rigorous tests, and the reaction of high altitudes of certain units of the contents closely studied. Its efficiency has remained unimpaired, under all these conditions, with a result that aircrews in all circumstances the means of treating at the earlies moment those wounds and burns which, if neglected, often take so long to repair.
