44 (Rhodesia) Squadron [entry point]

44 Squadron was reformed in March 1937 and flew Hampdens from RAF Waddington as part of 5 Group at the start of the war. In December 1941 it was the first squadron to introduce Lancasters to operational service. At this time around a quarter of its serving personnel were from Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The squadron moved to RAF Dunholme Lodge in May 1943 and to RAF Spilsby in September 1944. In July 1945 the squadron moved to RAF Mepal in preparation for the Tiger Force.
