635 Squadron was formed in March 1944 at RAF Downham Market as part of 8 Group. It operated as a Pathfinder unit and was equipped with Lancasters. It was the only squadron to use the Lancaster Mk 6 operationally which it did in trials from August to October 1944; only nine such aircraft were built. In May 1945 the squadron took part in Operation Manna to drop food to the Dutch as well as Operation Exodus to repatriate ex-prisoners of war.
