Description
Twelve trainees in uniform standing and sitting outside a hut. Trainees are wearing side caps, have whistles clipped to their collars and name tags on their chests. No brevets on their uniform. An instructor with an air gunner brevet is standing at the side of the group. Annotated on the reverse with the names of the airmen: '"Joe" Bailey, Burrows (Wiggy), Fellows (Harry), Ford (Ginger), Grant (General), Grieve (Lofty), Gorman (Jerry), Hark, Higham (Jimmy), Harvey (Joe), Houlden (Yorky), Hutchinson (Geordie) and W/O Roe (Frank).'
Eric Bailey is standing on the back row at the far left. He was nicknamed "Joe" by his father after being found secretly smoking. The nickname was derived from Joe Camel, a cartoon character used to advertise Camel Cigarettes. Additional information about this item was kindly provided by the donor.
