RAF Wick opened in 1939 initially under the joint ownership of Fighter and Coastal Commands. During the Battle of Britain the station was used to rotate Hurricane and Spitfire squadrons away from the battle to give them respite as well as providing defence for the airfield itself which was attacked. After October 1940 the station was almost exclusively used by Coastal Command aircraft including Ansons, Beauforts, Hudsons, Beaufighters and Wellingtons. Photo Reconnaissance Unit Spitfires were also stationed at RAF Wick. During 1940-41 Bomber Command detachments of 38 Squadron with Wellingtons and 50 Squadron with Hampdens used the station. The site is now the Wick John O’Groats Airport.
