Early in World War Two 47 Squadron operated against Italian forces in East Africa initially using Vincents and then Wellesleys. Moving to Egypt it converted to Beauforts in 1942 and carried out anti-shipping strikes and convoy escort duties in the Mediterranean supporting operations in Libya and Tunisia, latterly with Beaufighters. The squadron moved to India in 1944 in a ground attack role using Beaufighters and Mosquitos against the Japanese in Burma. Post-war 47 Squadron was used in a transport role.
