Letter from Lewis Ellis to his mother and father

Writes that he was enclosing crew photographs. Says they were doing a lot more flying and their rear gunner was in hospital again and they had to fly with a spare gunner. Mentions that they were expecting leave soon and they were going into Grimsby that evening. Writes about happy birthday being sung over the intercom, spending most of the day in bed and going to camp cinema.

Dear Mam & Dad,

I did not write earlier as I have been waiting for the photographs which you will find enclosed they are quite good. As I told you they were taken on Christmas Day and everyone looks slightly tipsy.

This week we have done a bit more flying than usual but we have a lot to make up for as we hardly flew at all during January. Young Ralph is in hospital with his stomach again. He always seems to get it just before we go on leave. The other

night we went on a trip and we had to carry a spare rear gunner and as it was his first trip we did not feel too happy about it.

Anyway he was not too bad and I do not think he was scared although I think he was rather nervous at take off.

All being well our leave should be around pretty soon so I shall be seeing you.

Tonight we have off so Johnny Rae and I are going to Grimsby which will be quite a change as we have not left camp for over a week.

On Friday morning as we were coming back all the crew were

singing “Happy Birthday to you” over the intercom but I spent most of the day in bed and went to the station cinema in the evening.

P.S. I received your letter and the Income tax paper this morning but I have not had time to collect the parcel although I see my name is on the list.
