Letter from Lewis Ellis to his mother and father

Writes about posting to Coltishall and meeting colleagues from Harrogate as well as a journey to new station. Says a little about location but did not think he would be there long. Said he would like to get some flying and complained that there was no town nearby. Suspected they would get no time off, but he would need at least 3 days if he was to go home.

Dear Mam & Dad,

As you will see from the address I am at a new station. I am sorry I could not write before but I have been very busy packing and unpacking [deleted letter] and I have only just settled down.

Our Sidney probably told you that I met three of the boys from Harrogate on the station; one of them was Taff Hennessy who is with me now. We arrived in Harrogate at 9 pm on Monday evening and on Tuesday afternoon we were told we had been posted but it was not until Wednesday

that we found where were going.

On Thursday morning I left Harrogate along with four other sergeants and three P.O.s. and we arrived here in the evening after a rotten journey with practically nothing to eat.

Friday and Saturday we spent getting to know the place and it is a good station and the food is good quite a bit better than the stuff at Harrogate. I do not think we shall be here very long, as we are still waiting for a posting to A.F.U, but we are going to try and get some flying in if it is at all possible.

The one thing wrong with this station is the distance from any towns. The nearest village is about two miles away and Norwich the nearest town

is quite a distance away and the train service is not very good.

I do not know if we will have any time off while we are here but even if we do I should need at least three day [sic] or it would not be worth coming as it would take me a day to get home and another to get back.
