My dear Mrs Ellis –
It may seem strange to have a letter from a stranger but I want to tell you that I saw your son today. He is here in Chicago on leave from his teaching in Canada. We all feel flattered when the R.A.F. boys want to come over to the States for their leave and we hope they like us as much as we like them. They certainly are a wonderful group of picked young men.
[page break]
Your boy came out here to the suburbs for Sunday dinner, and the point of this letter is to tell you that he is looking splendidly well and fit. I thought it might be a comfort to hear about him from another Mother.
I have two sons and a son in law in the service myself but I have not been very far separated from them yet, although I fear that will come too.
With best wishes for good luck for you and yours in these dangerous times and victory soon for us all
Very sincerely yours
Elizabeth D. Ballard
