297 Squadron [entry point]

Description
297 Squadron was formed in January 1942 at RAF Netheravon and was the first airborne forces squadron; in 1943 it became part of 38 (Airborne Force) Group. Initially equipped with Whitleys the squadron converted to Albemarles in July 1943 and then Halifaxes in late 1944. The squadron’s role included dropping supplies to resistance groups and ground troops, dropping paratroopers and towing Horsa and Waco gliders carrying troops and equipment. 297 Squadron took part in the Normandy campaign as well as later airborne operations.
