Description

RAF Valley is an operational station located 4 miles (7 kms) southeast of Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales.

RAF Valley was opened in 1941 in Fighter Command to provide defence for the north-west of England and shipping in the Irish Sea. Aircraft used include Hurricanes, Beaufighters and Defiants. An air-sea rescue unit was also based there with Lysanders and Walruses. From 1943 the station was used for ferrying B-17s and B-24s in from the USA for the United States Army Air Force. A Beam Approach Flight also used the station with Oxfords. Post war the station has been used mainly for training; 4 Flying Training School is currently operational at RAF Valley conducting basic and advanced fast jet training.
