RAF Andreas opened in 1941 as a Fighter Command station with Spitfires. Its location was ideal to protect Liverpool, Belfast, Glasgow and the shipping arriving at these ports. An air-sea rescue squadron flying Walruses was also located there. In May 1943 the station transferred to Training Command and 11 Air Gunnery School moved in with Martinets, Ansons and Wellingtons. By the end of the war more than 3,000 air gunners had been trained for Bomber Command.
