Description

RAF Kirton in Lindsey (also known as Kirton-in-Lindsey) was a fighter station located 15 miles (24 kms) north of Lincoln in Lincolnshire.

Originally used in World War One RAF Kirton in Lindsey was re-opened in 1940 in Fighter Command. The station was used by Hurricanes, Spitfires, Defiants, P-51s and Beaufighters. In 1942 it was transferred to the United States Army Air Force and used by them in a training role with P-38s and Airacobras. Transferred back to the RAF the station retained its training role with Spitfires. Post war the station became a Flying Training School with Tiger Moths and Oxfords. From 1966 to 2004 the station was used by the Army as the Rapier Barracks. Transferred back to the RAF it closed in 2014.
