It was opened in September 1939, initially for 10,000 Polish prisoners. It became the largest German prisoner of war camp and at the time of its liberation on 29 April 1945 it housed over 76,000 prisoners of war including British, American, Russian, French, Dutch and Belgians. RAF aircrew were first located in Stalag 7A in 1939-40 before Stalag Luft 1 was opened and in 1942 some RAF non-commissioned officer POWs were also held there. Between February and April 1945 4000 Allied aircrew POWs arrived having been moved as part of the long march from Stalag Luft 3 and other camps as the Russians advanced.
