In July 1944 most of the RAF prisoners from Stalag Luft 6 were transferred to Stalag 357; the remainder went to Stalag Luft 4. Six weeks later in September Stalag 357 and its 7,000 British Army and 3,000 RAF prisoners were transferred to Fallingbostel in north-west Germany. In March 1945 3,000 additional RAF POWs arrived in Stalag 357 from Stalag Luft 4 after taking part in the long march. Prisoner numbers peaked at 17,000 causing severe overcrowding and starvation rations. In early April 1945 12,000 prisoners were marched out northwards towards Hamburg. An RAF Typhoon pilot strafed the prisoners in the mistaken belief it was a German Army column; 60 were killed. Stalag 357 was liberated on 16th April 1945 and the column of prisoners marching north was liberated on 2 May.
