Le Courrier de l’Air, 11th November 1942
Title
Le Courrier de l’Air, 11th November 1942
Description
The publication outlines Winston Churchill’s speech from the Mansion House in London on 10th November 1942. He undertook to go into more detail in the House of Commons about the events in Egypt and North Africa. He praises the decisive and intense battle won by General Alexander and General Montgomery against Rommel in Egypt. Justice had been served on the Germans, and they could expect to encounter well-armed and even superior opponents going forward.
Churchill notes that this is a prelude to what is happening in the western Mediterranean, led by the United States and joined by the British. There have been accounts published of what was taking place in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
He notes that Spain and Portugal’s right to be free and peaceful are recognised by the United States and Great Britain. He expresses his confidence in France’s future liberty as long as there are people like General de Gaulle and General Giraud.
There was no desire to acquire land. The fight was to defend justice. Churchill praised and would defend the British Empire, which, with the monarchy, provided stability. They were no longer alone. The past showed they had nothing to fear.
The foothold in North Africa meant they could open a second front against Hitler and open up the Mediterranean to the allied forces to free Europe from Germany.
