Dear Mr. Dewey,
I was deeply sorry to have to telegraph you the news that your son, Sergeant Ronald Dewey, was reported missing as a result of air operations over enemy territory on the night of 13/14th May, 1943. Both myself and the members of the Squadron sincerely hope that he escaped injury and he is safe and well, and I would like to take this opportunity of expressing my most profound sympathy to you in your anxiety.
It takes some time for the names of prisoners-of-war to reach this country, but immediately I receive any such news regarding your son, I will communicate with you by telegram.
Your son has been with the Squadron for only a short time during which he has carried out three operational sorties against the enemy, and has proved himself to be a worthy upholder of the traditions of the R.A.F.
All your son’s personal effects are being handled by the Committee of Adjustment Officer who will forward them to the Central Committee of Adjustment Officer, R.A.F., Colnbrook, Slough, Bucks, and the officer in charge of that unit will communicate with you in due course.
Yours sincerely,
Signed J. Nettleton W/C
