The Bombing War in Europe 1939 – 1945
The bombing war in Europe 1939 – 1945 is a 11-minute animation produced by the University of Lincoln for the exhibition at the International Bomber Command Centre.
It plots targets and scale of the main strategic bombing operations in Europe during the Second World War. Its aim is to demonstrate not only the dramatic escalation of the air war but also the unprecedented scale of destruction that affected civilians and armed forces within the context of a total war. You can watch a short preview here.
The complete dataset has been released by the IBCC Digital Archive for researchers to add to, check, and correct. We are interested in recording any bombing attacks that are missing. Please contact us with any updates or additions using the form provided.
Notes
a) Data was taken from secondary sources available in 2016. Records of the RAF and USAAF bombing usually record the numbers of aircraft that took off rather than those that actually bombed, and often list the intended target rather than where bombs actually fell. The sources used for Luftwafffe, Regia Aeronautica bombing, and V weapon strikes often show where bombs actually fell rather than the intended targets.
b) Database right is an automatic right and protects databases against the unauthorised extraction and re-utilisation of the contents of the database. Database right lasts for 15 years from the making but, if published during this time, then the term is 15 years from publication.
