Interview with Franco Nocchieri
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Franco Nocchieri recalls his early years as an orphan in several different towns in the Province of Pavia. He describes the bombing of the Voghera railway station, which started while he was heading to school. He goes on to explain how he and his schoolmates used to cheer during air-raids, as they were free to skip school and play. He recounts his experience as live-in delivery boy at his stepfather’s tavern at Albaredo Arnaboldi, a vantage point from which he witnessed the daily attempts to destroy the Ponte della Becca, a bridge across the Po river. Franco describes his memories of ‘Pippo’, which he tried to watch every night, and mentions it dropping explosive devices disguised as fountain pens and toys. He describes the difficult coexistence between the local population and Axis troops, stressing the brutality of fascist militiamen. He also describes the fearsome reputation of a prison in the nearby town of Broni, known as ‘Villa Triste’, where many people disappeared. He remarks on his fearless attitude, except while listening to Radio Londra, which was a criminal offence at the time. Franco comments on the food shortages of the time and describes how the poor resorted to eating cats, which were considered to be a substitute for rabbit. He also recounts several wartime events, including: a narrow escape from the Ponte della Becca bombing; widespread fear inspired by so-called ‘Mongols’ (which were part of a German foreign division); a public execution; a friend killed by a bomb believed to have been dropped by ‘Pippo’; the strafing of a funeral procession, and the sight of Felice Fiorentini, a war criminal dubbed 'The Beast', being paraded in and around the province in a cage after the end of the war. He also mentions various stories from his time as a member of the Azione Cattolica Italiana, a Roman Catholic lay association.

Interview with Agnes Stocker
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Agnes Stocker (b. 1932) recounts her evacuation from her hometown and the journey to Ueckermünde. Agnes tells how she get separated from her sister, her brother and her cousin (who followed the road to Swinemünde), while she, her mother and her aunt first took refuge at Kalkofen and then took a boat to Ueckermünde. Describes the Swinemünde bombing as seen from Ueckermünde - recalls aircraft strafing, emphasises 25000 casualties and compares this operation to the bombing of Dresden. Agnes explains how the high death toll was due to the number of refugees who had fled from the East coast of the Baltic Sea by boat. She recalls how her sister, her brother and her cousin were caught in the city under attack, her anguish at not knowing their fate, and her relief when she eventually reunites with them.

Interview with Margarete Meyer
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Margarete Meyer (b. 1936) describes the 13 February 1945 Dresden bombing and recounts how her mother reacted to the alarm. She rushed to the shelter and took some belongings, including what she thought was her confirmation dress. Explains how her mother managed to leave the house after the second attack and escaped to the open fields along the river Elbe. Describes how she managed to reunite with her at her grandparent’s house after fleeing along streets, overcrowded with refugees and injured people. Describes how she didn’t experience the firestorm because she was on the Elbe riverbank, where she saw aircraft bombing civilians and people taking cover by throwing themselves onto the ground.

Laconia incident. Part 9
World War (1939-1945)
On a clear day, a four engined United States Army Air Force aircraft attacks the submarine U-156. Bullets are raining down on the figures on the deck of the submarine. Some of the figures are diving into the water, others are running for cover and some have been shot and are falling down.
FINE
Caption translates as: “(9)… As the submarine navigated just above water, the crew spotted an American aircraft on patrol. A few minutes went by and they heard a rumble, soon followed by another one which shook the submarine. It trembled, groaned, and listed. The depth charges hit the periscopes and damaged the batteries. They made us climb on the deck and were transshipped onto the U506, because the U156 had to swiftly sail away because of damage. The aircraft that bombed us was an American four-engine plane. We transshipped again on the ‘Annamite’. We reached safety in Dakar (From the account of BB.) The End.”

Interview with Paolo Bottani
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Paolo Bottani recalls wartime memories of a working-class family in Milan. Describes the widespread enthusiasm for the declaration of war, followed by a relatively calm period. Mentions alarms as greeted initially with joy because classes stopped and the care-free attitude of children who used to salvage shell casings for their scrap value. Recounts the first bombing he witnessed when in Crema and gives a detailed account of the Precotto primary school bombing, where he was trapped underground and brought to safety by the effort a rescue party. Describes the aftermath of the bombing on the surrounding areas and explains how the authorities presented him as evidence of the Allies’ brutality. Recalls his life as evacuee: fear, hunger, cold and painful frostbites; disrupted communication; destroyed bridges replaced by precarious footbridges, strafing. Interview with Angela Bianchi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Angela Bianchi remembers wartime life in the outskirts of Pavia, where she lived on a farm with other families. Recalls her experiences of being bombed while working in a clothes factory situated close to one of the most important Ticino bridges, then a strategic target. Gives a detailed description of two shelters: the first under palazzo Botta, a vast building in the city centre; the second, a mere dugout in the middle of a field. Reminisces over the fear of being trapped underground. Recollects a number of wartime episodes: work being disturbed by bombing and strafing, food pilfering, rustling, using a precarious pontoon bridge erected by army engineers, the visit of Benito Mussolini, after which living conditions improved. Recalls 'Pippo' strafing at night, although she was never sure of its allegiance. Describes long term effects of bombing and how low flying aircraft still scare her.

Interview with Maurizio Ghiretti
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Maurizio Ghiretti describes his early life at Monticelli Terme, a small town near Parma. He remembers various episodes of wartime hardships: food shortages, a tree taken down at night for firewood, men hiding in concealed rooms to avoid roundups, and how his father and other men escaped capture because they were forewarned by a German soldier. Describes how they ran for shelter in a nearby ditch covered by bushes, and how they passed the time there. Explains the perception of bombings among civilians, stressing how they were generally seen as the price to pay for being liberated. Mentions the effects of different operations on various cities in the Po river valley and describes bright target indicators descending on nearby bridges. Recounts hearing a siren which, in his uncle’s words, sounded like a donkey braying. Recounts of Jewish women and children being guarded in a hotel before being sent to the Fossoli concentration camp. Remembers various anecdotes of Allied prisoners of war, some working as farmhands, others building the first sewage system. Stresses how his parents never kept him in the dark about the war situation and he was always abreast of what was going on, to the point that even the children took political sides. Describes the fall of the fascist regime mentioning propaganda murals being desecrated with faeces. Recounts the end of the war when cheering crowds welcomed the Allies by waving hawthorn brushes at them, which reminded him of Palm Sunday. Mentions briefly the post-war political situation.

The informants remember wartime hardships endured near Pavia and Piacenza. Several stories recalled: a farmhouse being thoroughly searched for partisans, children questioned, people injured by shell splinters, a makeshift dugout used as shelter, improvised lighting at home, strafing, Germans looking for deserters and American troops giving away crackers to the children. They tell how the menacing presence of 'Pippo' forced them to relieve themselves inside on the floor. Mentions the bombings of Milan as seen from the countryside where they were.

Interview with Tullio Magnani
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Tullio Magnani remembers his wartime years in the Pavia province. Although his father was blacklisted as a subversive communist he did not have any trouble at school. He recounted his role as a young resistance helper smuggling food rationing coupons, while working as a shop boy for a well-known antifascist. Remembers being an eye-witness to the bombing of Milan from Pavia. Retells of a machine gun being set up by fascists on the Ticino river bank, which proved ineffective against allied aircraft. Mentions the strafing of a funeral procession at the Cava Manara municipality carried out by what was thought to be a spotter aircraft. Remembers 'Pippo' bombing at night and targeting the fishermens wharf. Stressing how, during the intense bombing and strafing of Pavia on 4 September when they lost everything, the local fascist authority of Travacò municipality was very helpful in providing them with cots, food and lodgings in a school. Mentions wartime episodes: people seeking refuge in a tunnel used as a makeshift shelter and the carnage that ensued from the bombing, a chemist being arrested for being caught red-handed listening to Radio London, how some driven by poverty and hunger, joined the fascist guards and resorted to going to the cinema before the curfew to find a warm place to stay. Explains how Pavia’s old bridge, unlike the other two which were hit, was not hit by the bombers because it was not clearly visible in the reconnaissance photographs taken from aircraft. Describes the celebrations at the end of the war and reflects on the duality of bombers / liberators. Remembers seeing for the first time an American soldier called Dino, who gave them a soap crate as a gift for washing his laundry. Mentions post war acts of revenge, his role in the local branch of the communist party, the 1948 general election, and how he did not get a job as a tax collector because of his political persuasion.

Interview with Guido Di Blas and Ilario Bolletti
World War (1939-1945)
Projectiles, Aerial
Guido Di Blas and Ilario Bolletti recount wartime memories associated with the town of Monfalcone and the surrounding area. Describes a severe night of bombing stressing the ominous sight of target indicators and loud explosions; recalls the massive loss of life when local children who were gathered to watch a magician's show, found themselves under attack. Recounts the appalling sight of many corpses placed in improvised morgues. Describes local shelters, some being modified First World War structures. Recollects a bomber being shot down and the stir caused by the sight of a black airman; remembers the strafing of a railway station when the aircraft was so close he could clearly see the pilot. Mentions various wartime stories: conscription dodgers trying to escape roundups, reprisals, the ominous presence of "Pippo", and a German armoured train opening fire. Recollects how people tried to get by and circumvent rationing: electrical supply by tapping overhead power lines, pilfering supplies from goods trains, bribing Fascist officers to make them turn a blind eye, trading stolen salt for flour. Describes post-war hardships when they salvaged shell cases and metal splinters for their scrap value, and mentions improvised pyrotechnic devices made with explosives taken from live ammunition. Recalls people injured or killed by improper handling of live shells. Reflects on the legitimacy of attacking non-military targets and the feeling of hopelessness this created. In the photograph, Guido Di Blas is on the left and Ilario Bolletti is on the right.

Interview with Delia Del Corto
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Delia del Corto (b. 1932) remembers daily life in wartime Tuscany, living in a family of ten. Provides details on rural life, especially home bread making, and stresses the difficult coexistence with feared German troops. Mentions many anecdotes in the context of the Italian civil war: actions of the resistance, locals being strafed, round-ups, and the killing of 32 civilians as reprisal for the death of a German officer. Recollects the day she found herself under aircraft fire while she took sheep to pastures with her little brother. Describes the construction of a makeshift dug out in a field in which her father hid and recollects how she got caught in crossfire.

Interview with Marisa Bianchi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Marisa Bianchi remembers her wartime years at Sesso, a rural hamlet in the Reggio Emilia province. Stresses the abundance of locally farmed food and emphasises how billeted German troops were friendly and supportive, even if she and her family had to work for them. Recalls "Pippo" coming over every day at the same time. Curses it for the fear it caused and describes two episodes connected with its menacing presence: being machine-gunned while working and the sight of her house under attack, an incident in which a relative died as the consequence of emotional shock. Explains her revulsion of Fascists, feared for their brutality and recollects the killing of her cousin on the last day of war. Describes wartime episodes: Fascists executing four partisans and torturing suspects; Germans shooting people on the Crostolo bank; a young worker being shot by mistake for carrying a bundle mistaken for a bomb. Recalls providing accommodation to evacuees from Reggio Emilia and the widespread enthusiasm at the end of the war.

Interview with Andreino Pagano
Andreino Pagano (b. 1934) remembers his wartime experiences in the Pavia province. He explains how a parish church provided a good shelter owing to its thick walls. Recalls various stories: resorting to the black market, the bombing of the Voghera railway works, daytime strafing of a lorry delivering biscuit boxes, scattering them all over the place, the driver seeking shelter inside a vineyard cottage fireplace and afterwards being mistaken for a chimney sweep as he was covered in soot; Germans seizing his only workhorse which was later returned, being 'bobtailed'. Describes how his farmhouse was first occupied by German and then American soldiers, the latter coming with so-called ‘Mongols’. Remembers the first use of Penicillin and food being stored in a well like a larder. Mentioning 'Pippo' flying and recollecting blacked-out windows covered with blue paper. He remembers the droning noise made by the bombers and the bombs as they were falling.
