My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter. I think I have still got my last years running kit, I will see if it is in the linen room. It was a half holiday on Friday. Our team went to Kurseong to play Victoria + [deleted] a [/deleted] Gothals, we lost against Victoria the score being 4-0, and we lost against
Gothals 3-0, so we have lost the Newton cup, if Victoria beat Gothals by 3 goals then they get the cup, because they drew with St. Josephs. There are only 64 days left to come home. The weather is clearing up a bit. Mummy sent us the [deleted] l [/deleted] Little Folks magazine, we have now got about 4 or 5. We had an exam on wednessday [sic], it was an [deleted] e [/deleted] English exam, but we have not had our marks as yet. We had pictures up here last night, they were quite good, and
[page break]
it was on a small screen, but even then it was quite good. Havelock first XI lost against Lawrence first XI, but our second beat there [sic] second. The house matches are not finished yet but so far this is how the houses go
1. [underlined] ST. [/underlined} Lawrence. 28 marks.
2. [underlined] nd. [/underlined] Havelock. 26 " My house.
3. [underlined] rd. [/underlined] Clive 10 " Stevies house.
4. [underlined] th. [/underlined] Hastings [deleted] 16 [/deleted] 8 "
My house still has a chance of winning. There are no cups for the sports this year, I suppose because the school has not enough money. I am ending now
with love from your
loving [underlined] son [/underlined] David.
P.S. Kite flying season has come out. [underlined] [/underlined]

ST. PAUL'S SCHOOL,
JALAPAHAR,
DARJEELING,
2.10.32. 1932.
My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter. The exam boys stay on very much later than the 1. [underlined] ST [/underlined] of December. I think I can arrange with one of the staff who are staying up, and has got a son 13 years old. I will let you know as soon as possible. We played Gothals yesterday and lost 4-0. Victory who beat us 1-0, beat Gothals 1-0. and so have won the Newton Cup. In the Latin [inserted] exam [/inserted] every boy in my form except one failed. The one who passed got 48. I got 30, really 35, but I got 5 marks taken away for talking, I only asked a boy if he had finished his paper. If those 5 marks had not been taken away I would have come 3. [underlined] rd [/underlined]. Our puja holidays will soon be starting. We have had some of the heats of the sports. The high jump, Long jump, and throwing the cricket ball in my class, but I came in none
[page break]
of them. It was out of another boy and me to come in the high jump for the final. but he just beat me. I cleared 4 ft-3 ins. [deleted] I I [/deleted] I think we are having some of the heats of the running races tomorrow, I hope to come in in [sic] [deleted] t [/deleted] some of the running things. Next year I will have a much better chance. In my class there is an obstical [sic] race this year. It is in some of the other classes too. This year there is going to be a house cup for fives.
In my class, my house boys are doing quite well. For the high jump 3 out of the 4 picked are my house, in long jump 3 out of the 6 picked are my house and in throwing the cricket ball 3 out of the 6 picked are my house, so I thing [sic] my house will get quite a lot of marks in my class.
I am ending now with lots of love and kisses from your loving son [underlined] David. [/underlined]

My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter. Please dont worry about me as I am alright again and go to class. Only my ear gives me a little trouble now, and I am going to the Sanatarium [sic] tomorrow and the doctor will have a look at my ear. We had the house box [deleted] y [/deleted] ing yesterday, I did not fight as I am not yet strong enough. My house won the house box [deleted] y [/deleted] ing. The points were as follows, Havelock 29 points, Lawrence 25 points, Clive 9 points, and Hastings 4 points, My house has pulled up to [indecipherable] Hastings, 25 points and to Clive 20 points, so we are only 10 points behind Clive now. But there is still the hockey house matches, and the Fives cup matches.
There are only 20 days left to come home. I came 1. [underlined] ST [/underlined] in the Maths Exam with
[page break]
63 marks, but we have had other tests which count so on the whole I am 3. [underlined[ rd [/underlined], with 66 marks. I sat for my Theory music exam yesterday, I think I have done quite well [deleted] tu [/deleted]. The results will come out in January, when we are at home. Stevie passed in his music exam with 75 marks. I am ending now, with lots of love and

My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter, and the pamflits [sic], some of them were very good ones. The under 15 XI played St. Josephs and they beat us 4-1 duly to the falt [sic] of our goal keep. Stevie played centreforward [sic] and I played right back. Our forwards could not break through their backs so this wednessday [sic] I am going forwards. Lets [sic] hope we win this time. We should have easily won the game. The first 15 minutes of the game the ball only came on our half once. Last night we saw a piece call [sic] “Head Winds”, it was shown with the school machine, and we enjoyed it. We saw Mummy yesterday and today and had a good time. I have come 5th this month. I know my dorm masters report. It is Jo in charge of the Dorm, and maintains

good discipline. Jo a good lad in himself, and my conduct is very good quite good those two arent [sic] they? Have the trees grown much bigger? We went [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] riding today and enjoyed ourselves. [deleted] At [/deleted]
At present the points for the Rectors Cup between St. Josephs [sic] and us are St. Josephs [sic] 7. St. Pauls [sic] 3. The total number of points amounts to 20 points. 6 marks for each of the two 1st XI matches and 4 marks for each of the two 2nd XI matches.

15th October 1933
My darling Daddy,
Thanks for your letter.
I got a pair of spikes charged in the bill. I hope you don’t mind, there was no time to write to you so I asked Mummy. I payed [sic] Rs.11 for them. I got it for 1-8 less than the real price. It is a very good pair. Mummy saw them yesterday.
We had our fair yesterday it was a thourough [sic] sucess [sic]. We thouroughly [sic] enjoyed ourselves. I saw Sylvia and with our gang of friends took her round the place. I introduced her to Mummy. [deleted] We had a s [/deleted] Queenshill came, the [undecipherable] were not allowed. After the fair there was a show by a man & his daughters, the dancing was marvellous. Forbes & myself & Sylvia’s brother sat with her at the concert. We had a good time. I got 43 in Physics, I think I came 6th.
[page break]
There was a horse race in the fair yesterday. Really I was first but they said everyone cut [deleted] the [/deleted] [inserted] one of the [/inserted] corners except one boy but that was wrong, even Mummy thinks so. I rode like a jockey with short stirrups. Mummy & Forbes mother were very frightened because a dog came on the field and all the horses ran of [sic] the course. We got them on again though. It was a very exciting race. I did not go out today because my leave is stopped. I had a row with the gym instructor & he told the rector. After my leave was taken away I went to the instructors [sic] room and gave him something to think about. Cheer up Daddy only [deleted] [indecipherable] [/deleted] a few more days left, and you will have Mummy to entertain you. We went to Tiger Hill today and saw the sun rise & Mt Everest. The colouring & scenery was marvellous. No more news today with lots of love & kisses
from your loving son David.

My Darling Daddy.
Thanks for your letter. I went to the Pictures with Mrs Forbes to Destry Rides Again” by Tom Mix.” It was very good. Stevie and I went to the Pictures on Saturday with Mummy to “A Perfect Understanding.” It was not to [sic] good. We went out to Mummy yesterday. With the riding leave stopped I have nothing to do. So I read books. I read Brent of Gatehouse by Gunby Hadath. Also The Sea Hawk, Captain Blood his Odyssey and the Chronicles of Captain Blood. By Rafael Sabatini. They are all very good stories.
Young Cox wrote to me and I wrote back. It is much colder now.
[indecipherable word] Forbes & me go shooting with a daisy air gun. We shot a sparrow

I hurt my heel badly when vaulting a railing and was in bed for three days. I am out of bed now though. Mrs Forbes says if I had fallen on my heel a little more heavily I [deleted] have [/deleted] would have fractured the bone. No more news today.

My own darling Daddy.
I am glad to hear you arrived [deleted] saft [/deleted] safely. Thanks very much for the nice time you gave us when you were up here. We were given a holiday on Friday for winning the cup, but we were not allowed out. We went for a swim on Friday and today. The water has become much warmer and we can enjoy our swims now. In the last few days two Nuns in the convent have died. We have started football. [deleted] we [/deleted] My class played the VII today [inserted] (in cricket). [/inserted] We only finished one innings each. We were 100 all out and they were 84 including 10 runs start. I took three wickets today in five overs. Mummy came and saw us for a few minutes today. Dont [sic] forget to keep the dogs. I suppose you will have to give Bill away, but keep the others. There have been a few fires on the hills since you left. We have not been told
[page break]
about having to be inoculated so we will ask the nurse as she has most probably been told. We saw the regatta last evening. It was a hopeless show from beginning to end. There is no concert for the Principal’s feast this year as it takes too much trouble getting it up. We will have one during the sports holidays. We have not so strong a football team this year as last year’s but there aren’t any really strong teams up this year. The band is supposed to be good. They are the only team we ought to find hard to beat. Well no more news today as I have to play football. God bless & keep you for us with love & kisses from your loving son

My own Darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all the news. Many happy returns of the day. [Deleted word] God bless and keep you for us. So Bill got the better of the fight. Its very surprising as the other dog is so much heavier. I am glad to hear you are nearly settled down now. Steve is being careful of his arm. He is playing cricket but not hockey or foot-ball. The rains have broken at last. We have nothing but rain now. We are going to the convent concert tomorrow. Our B beat P.S.C. B 2-1 last saturday. This saturday our A plays the “Reserve Police”. The matches of this tournament are league. Monday was a holiday for Brother Connelly’s feast. We went out with Mummy on Sunday and
[page break]
and went through Government house grounds. We also went skating. Mummy came to see us this evening and then went to the convent concert. At present we are having [inserted] an [/inserted] interclass foot-ball tournament. Each [deleted word] class entering an A and B team. So far my class has won all its matches A & B. I play for the A and am Captain of the B. That is my class A and B. [deleted word] Swimming is quite enjoyable now as the water is much warmer. My class played the VII in the cricket tournament and beat them by 7 runs even though our Captain was not playing. I only made 9 runs and was then caught. Just as I was getting set. No more news today [deleted word] God bless & keep you for us with lots of love and
kisses from your
loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your nice letter. Steve is being careful of his arm so there is no need to worry. Cricket has stopped on account of the rain. I will be careful in future and will not get into trouble. This was my first row so its nothing. I have already paid up the four rupees from my own savings and will leave it at that as Mummy is spending a lot on us. I have already learnt my first [deleted word] concert piece and must now become perfect at it so as to be able to play it fast. Mummy came and saw us last evening before we went out. She gave us a surprise for not only was my pullover ready but also Steve’s. They both look very nice and fit us perfectly. Poor Steve had an apsis [sic] under one of his eye teeth. He had the tooth out and the apsis [sic] lanced. He is quite allright [sic] now except for a slight
[page break]
swelling which is only to be expected.
On Wednesday our “B” lost to the Command 5-1. And last evening they lost P.S.C. “A” 3-0. That’s good for them. Our “A” beat the Ghouska’s last evening 5-1. Our goalkeeper was missing as he had a dislocated ankle. We had a Latin Test yesterday. I do not think I did badly. I am getting on well in class, music and games. The other day we had a terrific downpour for a few hours. Our big field was simply flooded with water. In the interclass tournament my class is second. We are only three points behind the leading class. We will soon be having the knockouts. These are very exciting and rough. No more news today with lots of love and kisses God bless & keep you for us your loving

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your nice letter. Both Steve and I played for the orchestra today. It was a bit difficult being our first time, but we shall soon get into it. The piano is scarcely heard so it doesn’t matter much. [deleted] It [/deleted] The piano is put in so as to complete the harmony or something like that. We saw Mummy on Wednesday evening and last evening I accompanied her to the Capitol and then came back to the College boys. I had my first injection day before yesterday. My arm was a bit painful and didn’t feel too bright, but it did not knock me out. Steve will go soon. His arm is ever so much better. In fact it is very nearly normal. In the inter class tournament my class is still a few points behing [sic] the leading
[page break]
one, but we hope to catch up soon. The second football [deleted] team [/deleted] tournament has begun. P.S.C. “A.” beat a Ranicat team 3-0 and our “A” beat the Command “B” 12-0. With a little luck we might win this tournament. We have not [deleted] hear [/deleted] entered a “B” team this tournament as it would be useless to do so. I was very surprised to hear from Mummy that I had a bad report, especially as I have worked and seldom missed my lessons. The marks of the whole class were low. The boy came first only got two honours one of which was Urdu and that the Urdu master corrected. He got one or two 60’s and 50’s and the rest in the 40’s. I don’t know how I did so badly in Latin considering there were only two questions and I got one almost completely right by heart from the book. Mummy will explain why the marks are so low. Well no more news today. God bless & keep you for us. With lots of Love & kisses
from your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. Well nearly everything is over now except camp. We set out for Bhawali on the 6th. I did not do to badly in the sports. I came 2nd in the half-mile and got a nice cup. My class won the inter-class relay so I got a medal also and a cup for football. Not at all bad. Steve [deleted] go [/deleted] won a medal for coming 2nd in place kicking. I will get my shooting medals on prize giving day. The sports were a sucess.[sic] We had a fine time during the holidays. Thank goodness it did not

Rain. There was quite a crowd of [indecipherable] boys at Jocksley Hall So we had a fine time. We have learnt a couple of very amusing drawing room jokes. The rink has been refloored and is quite nice now. I also went horse riding. I was still quite at home in the saddle. I did quite well in the last series of tests. I came 9th. That’s gone up two places from the [deleted] la [/deleted] first series. I lost in the boxing to one of my class boys. It was hardly a fight as [deleted] none [/deleted] neither of us went at it. The boxing has been very badly arranged and when boys of the same class come together, especially friends, there is hardly a fight. It has turned very cold these last few
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
days.
I recieved [sic] a letter from Lall Stoult, one of my old class fellows broke the record in his class for high jump. He did 5ft 3ins. he will most probably do much better in a couple of years as he is still young. Mummy has gone into Bhawali to-day with Doris Lucas and another student. In the end [obscured] person did not turn up at Mrs Hearness but [deleted] is [/deleted] it is much jollier at Jocksley Hall as there are people of our own [indecipherable] there.
Well no more news today
God bless & keep you & Mummy for us with lots of love & kisses from your loving son David.

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and the newspaper cuttings. They are most interesting. Yes thank God the Gowdowns were not burnt. I am glad to hear that there was not much jute[sic] burnt[deleted]d[/deleted]. I arrived safely from camp yesterday, after having a fine time. If we had a month of camp we would all come back strong men. While giving in rifles one of the boys rifles fell straight on my foot so I am not playing games for a few days. It was lucky that I had army [deleted]f[/deleted] boots on. [deleted] I w[/deleted] we saw Mummy today and had a long chat. Steve’s arm does not effect him in the least while playing tennis. In fact he is playing a much harder game now.

I won a [indecipherable] in camp in one of the shooting competitions and was done out of one in another. I didn’t half curse the adjutant. Hockey has begun again. The Leslie Tournament (Hockey), Interclass begins on Sunday. I hope my class does something. We have had no more rain but it is turning quite cold now. The water in the morning is awful.
Never mind Dad you won’t be lonely much longer please God, as there are less than 60 days left.
My class played the xth[sic] in cricket this morning. We made less than 50 all out and they are still below us for six wickets. I made a duck. Well no more news today. God bless & keep you both for us.with lots of love & kisses from your loving son.
David.

Thanks were given for newspaper clippings his father sends. School camp has just finished and he won one of the shooting competitions, prize being one rupee. Had a gun dropped on his foot but all okay. Mother and Steve are both well. Weather is turning very cold.
