Pilot’s Flying Log book for Flt Lt William Drinkell from 11th June 1942 to 31st March 1947. Initial flying training in Canada and USA. Advanced pilot training in England with 6 AFU, 14 OTU, and LFS before operational posting to 50 Squadron. Post war posting to 108 OTU and then Australia (243 Squadron) Hong Kong (96 Squadron) and Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF).
Served at RAF Halton, RAF Wittering, RAF Hornchurch, RAF Eastchurch, RAF Harrogate, RAF Little Rissington, RAF Market Harborough, RAF Scampton, RAF Wiglsey, RAF Syerston, RAF Skellingthorpe, RAF Wymeswold, RAF Castle Donington,
Aircraft flown were DH 82 Tiger Moth, Stearman, Valiant, Harvard, Commodore, Catalina, Anson, Oxford, Wellington X, Stirling III, Norseman (C64), Lancaster, Dakota, Sea Otter, Auster, York, Sunderland.
Carried out 5 day and 27 night operations with 50 Squadron to Darmstadt, Bremerhaven, Rheydt, Kaiserslautern, Munster, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Nuremberg, Flushing docks, Bergen, Dusseldorf, the Dortmund-Ems Canal, the Mitteland Canal, Harburg, Duren, Heilbronn, the Urft Dam, Heimbach, Munich, Politz, Houffalize, Leuna, Brux, Siegen, the Rositz Oil Refinery, the Bohlen Synthetic Oil Plant, Wurzburg. He also carried out two Operation Exodus flights.
Awarded the DFC after an operation during which his aircraft was hit by bombs from another aircraft above him. He successfully flew his aircraft back to England. Includes various newspaper clippings.

Description
An account of the resource
Raymond Harris was a pilot who flew the Lancaster on 34 operations with No 9 Squadron. The log book runs from 19 September 1942 to 24th August 1945. After his initial flying at the No 9 EFTS at RAF Ansty, flying in the Tiger Moth, Raymond went out to No 32 EFTS RAF Bowden, Alberta, Canada, flying the Stearman and occasionally the Tiger Moth. He remained there until December 1942 when he was posted to No 37 SFTS, Calgary, Alberta to fly the Harvard and occasionally the Anson. He remained there until April 1943 when he graduated and returned to Britain. Raymond was posted to 3 (P) AFU RAF South Cerney, flying the Oxford. He attended a BAT course at No 1532 BAT Flt, RAF Bagdown Farm in August. He was posted to 17 OTU, RAF Silverstone & RAF Turweston, 2 November 1943 to fly the Wellington. In April 1944 he was moved to 1661 HCU at RAF Winthorpe flying the Stirling, until May when he was posted to 5 LFS at RAF Syerstone flying the Lancaster. In May Raymond was posted to 9 Squadron at RAF Bardney flying the Lancaster. He did his first operation to Nantes on the 22 May and his second with his crew to Martin-de-Varreville on the 28 May. He did operations to Ferme D'urville, Point du Hoe, Argentan, Gelsenkirchen, Limoge, Prouville,Vitry le-francois, Creil, Culmont Chalimoray, Vileneuve st George, Stuttgart, Camagnes, Rilly la Montagne, Bois de Cassen, Trossy, Etaples, Lorient, La Pallice, Bordeax, Givorg, Brest, Girzerigen, Karlsruhe, Flushing, Tromso (Tirpitz), Urft Dam, Munich, Bergen, Ijmuiden, Altenbeken, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Sassnitz, Arnsberg, Vlotho, Bremen and Swinemunde. He flew a Cook's Tour and also took part in one of the Post Mortem operations. He was posted to 50 Squadron at RAF Sturgate in June. The last flight in the Log book was on 24 August in Lancaster PA474 which now flies with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.<br /><br /><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW73911805 BCX0">This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. Len Curtis' Flying Log Book as Air Bomber from July 1942 until 5 August 1944 when he was reported as missing in action. Started at 15 EFTS then 10 AFU. 29 OTU, 1660 CU. Posted to 106, 630 and 617 Squadrons for operations.
Served at RAF Dumfries, RAF North Luffenham, RAF Swinderby, RAF Syerston, RAF East Kirkby, RAF Woodhall Spa. Aircraft flown were Tiger Moth, Anson, Botha, Wellington, Lancaster. Carried out a total of 39 operations. One night propaganda leaflet drop with 29 OTU, 11 night operations with 106 Squadron, 11 night operations with 630 Squadron, 9 day and 7 night operations with 617 Squadron. Targets included Paris, Berlin, Nuremberg, München Gladbach, Munich, Kassel, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hannover, Dusseldorf, Toulouse, Saumur Tunnel, Le Havre, Boulogne, Watten, St Omer, Wizernes, Rilly la Montagne, Siracourt, Etaples, Brest. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer Cheney.

Description
An account of the resource
Recollections of John's service career, by his son Clive, including a letter from 44 Squadron Association. It describes John taking fellow RAF volunteers' compulsary swimming tests in their stead and his initial training in Rhodesia. He flew in Wellingtons before transferring to Lancasters with 44 Squadron. John had to bail out on his first operation after his Lancaster, ED348 'M'. was hit by flak. On this operation the crew members were Pilot Officer A C Smith, Flight Engineer Sergeant M O D Barrett, Navigator Sergeant J Dobson, Bomb Aimer Sergeant T J Profit, Wireless Operator Sergeant C M Meakin, Air Gunner A R H Wells and Rear Gunner Sergeant J W G Saunders. Three members of the crew, Sergeants Barrett, Meakin and Dobson did not survive the incident. John was captured by the Germans and became a prisoner of war during which time two tunnels were dug from the camp but both were discovered. Whilst a prisoner John befriended a Polish girl in an adjacent camp. He was liberated by the Russians and made his way to Switzerland from where he was repatriated.

Navigators, air bombers, air gunners and flight engineers flying log book for Archie Henry Halliday from 30 August 1944 to 10 April 1945 detailing his training and operational duties. Training was with No.4 S of TT at RAF St. Athan and Heavy Conversion Units at RAF Lindholme and RAF Bottesford. All operations were flown with 101 Squadron with Flight Officer Withenshaw as pilot. He also flew non operational flights with pilots Flight Officer McKay and Flight Officer Hanney. Aircraft flown in training were Halifax Mk II and Lancasters Mk I and Mk III. Archie took part in 31 operations, on which 25 night operations in which he flew as engineer. The operations were to Karlsruhe, Osnabrück, Ludwigshafen, Ulm, Coblenz, Bonn, Büer, Osterfeld, Nürenburg, Merseburg, Duisburg, Zuffenhausen, Mannheim, Weisbaden, Kleves, Pforzheim, Cologne, Chemnitz, Dessau, Kassel, Essen, Dortmund, Misburg, Hanau, Langendreer, Bremen, Hanover and Paderborn in Germany and Brüx in Czechoslovakia.

Thomas Carter’s Flying Logbook as Flight Engineer from 23rd March to 20th April 1943 when he was shot down and killed on his first operation.
Completed training with 1662 Conversion Unit before being posted to 100 Squadron.
Served at RAF Blyton and RAF Grimsby.
Aircraft flown was the Lancaster.
His only operation was a night operation to Stettin. His pilot was Wing Commander J. G. Swain.

Bill Burnett’s Flying Log Book as Flight Engineer from 22 May 1944 to 20 April 1946. Initially with 1660 Heavy Conversion Unit before transferring to 5 Lancaster Finishing School and then 617 Squadron for operational duties in Europe. In January 1946 posted with 617 Squadron to RAF Digri, India with South East Asia Expeditionary Force.
Served at RAF Swinderby, RAF Syerston, RAF Woodhall Spa, RAF Waddington. Aircraft flown were Stirling, Lancaster I, Lancaster III, Lancaster VII.
Flew 25 day and 2 night operations with 617 Squadron to Brest, Westkapelle, Tromso (Tirpitz), Urft Dam, Ijmuiden, Politz, Rotterdam, Oslo Fjord, Bergen, Pootershaven, Bielefeld Viaduct, Nienburg Viaduct, Arnsberg Viaduct, Bremen, Farge, Hamburg, Swinemünde, Berchtesgaden. He also flew two Cook’s Tours and six Operation Dodge flights. His pilot on operations was Flight Lieutenant Goodman.
Includes a hand written note Dam Buster mines dropped in North Sea 31 March 1945.

Frank Williamson’s RAF Pilot’s Flying Log Book from 15 December 1940 to 25 February 1943 detailing training, operations and instructional duties as a pilot. He was stationed at RAF Desford (No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School), RAF Shawbury (No. 11 Service Flying Training School), RAF Abingdon (No. 10 Operational Training Unit), RAF Leeming (No. 10 Squadron), RAF Dalton and Topcliffe (102 Squadron), RAF Melbourne (10 Squadron Conversion Flight, No. 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit) and RAF Riccall (No. 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit). Aircraft in which flown: DH82 Tiger Moth, Oxford, Whitley, Halifax.
Records 27 operations (26 night, one day, several abandoned for various reasons) on the following targets in Belgium, France and Germany (some targets not named when duties not carried out): Boulogne, Bremen, Brest, Cherbourg, Cologne, Duisberg, Essen, Hamburg (abandoned), Hamburg, Nantes, Ostend, Paris, Rostock, St. Nazaire, Stettin, Vichy, and Warnemunde. His first pilot on first four operations were Pilot Officer Godfrey, Sergeant Robertson and Pilot Officer Joyce. Also includes technical notes, several personal notes (including a poem), and two endorsements, one in green.

His pilots on operations were Warrant Officer Digby, flight lieutenant Hopkins and Pilot officer Gilchrist.

Description
An account of the resource
D Evans’s Flight Engineer’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 19 June 1944 to 26 June 1947, detailing his flying training and operations flown as Flight Engineer. He was stationed at RAF St Athan (4 SoTT), RAF Winthorpe (1661 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Metheringham (106 Squadron), RAF Warboys (PNTU), RAF Coningsby and RAF Hemswell (83 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Stirling, Lancaster and Lincoln. He flew on 13 night operations with 106 Squadron and 11 with 83 Squadron, total 24 (but his total in log book is 25). Targets were Munster, Karlsruhe, Kaiserlauten, Brunswick, Bergen, Dusseldorf, Dortmund-Ems canal, Hamburg, Trondheim, Munich, Horten, mining (Danzig Bay), Bohlen, Lutzkendorf, Wurtsburg, Molbis, Cham and Komotau. Post war he flew on one Exodus operation, one Cooks Tour operation and 3 Dodge operations. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Anderson, Flight Lieutenant Brown and Flight Lieutenant Watts. The four final pages of his log book are filled with autographs from his colleagues.

Pilot’s flying log book for Flight Lieutenant Cecil H Phillips from 11 July 1942 to 20 August 1950. Detailing training schedule, instructional duties and operations flown. Served at RAF Cranwell, RAF Finningley, RAF Lindholme, RAF Faldingworth, RAF Upwood and RAF Oakington. Aircraft flown were DH 82, Oxford, Wellington, Halifax Mk V, Lancaster Mk 1 and Lancaster Mk3. This log book covers the training, operational and post war flying career of Geoffrey Gosney from 2 July 1942 to 12 July 1951. It includes a cartoon of the 426 Squadron crest. Geoffrey flew 31 operations in two tours of duty, 23 of which were night operations with 10, 227, 426, 428 and 462 Squadrons. Targets in Egypt, Libya, France, Germany and Greece were Calais, Cap Gris Nez, Dorsten, Frankfurt, Goch, Hanau, Leverkusen, Maleme, Marsa Matruh, Mönchengladbach, Münster, Rheine, Sallum, Soda Bay, Tobruk and Wanne-Eickel. Pilots in operations were Squadron Leader Goldston, Sergeant Wyatt, Flight Officer McGregor, Flying Officer Kagna, Wing Commander Burgess, Flight Lieutenant Garratt, Flight Officer Brodie, Pilot Officer Fuller, Wing Commander Black and Flight Lieutenant Davies. During March, April and May Geoffrey’s duty in the Halifax VII is described in his log book as ‘’screening”. In 1946/47 he was involved in the transport of troops and the dropping of paratroopers and the transportation of freight and troops in the Middle East. Back in the UK he took part in a formation fly past over Banbury. In February 1948 his duties are again described as “screening’ in the Halifax but now with ‘Flying Wing’ at Fairford. Geoffrey remained in the Royal Air Force and served in Palestine. He took part in the Berlin Airlift, transporting coal to Berlin. Transferred to RAF Hemswell with 97 Squadron.

William Norman's observer's and air gunner's flying log book
Description
An account of the resource
William began his training at the No 12 AGS RAF Bishops Court in October 1943 flying in the Anson, he left there in December and by March 1944 he was at No 18 OTU, RAF Bramcote, flying in the Wellington, remaining there until April. In May he was briefly at No 1481 Bomber and Gunnery Flight, RAF Binbrook before moving to 1662 HCU, RAF Blyton initially flying in the Halifax but in late June he moved to No 1 LFS, RAF Hemswell flying in the Lancaster. In July 1944 he arrived at No 626 Squadron, RAF Wickenby, as a mid upper gunner on the Lancaster. He did his first operation to Caen on the 18 July. He continued on operations to Shcolven, Kiel, Courtrai, Stuttgart, Foret de Nieppe, Pauilliac, Fontenay le Marmion, Russelshiem, Stettin, St Riquier, Eindhoven, Le Havre, Frankfurt, and Rheine. He did not return from a mining operation to the Kattegat on the 4 October 1944. He had completed 18 operations. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer Green.

An account of the resource
J G Madge’s Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book detailing operations and training flown covering the period 18 November 1942 to 10 November 1944. He was stationed at RAF Morpeth (4 AGS), RAF Little Horwood (26 OTU), RAF Marham (1483 (B)G Flight), RAF Stradishall (1657 HCU), RAF Wratting Common (90 Squadron), RAF Barford St John (16 OTU), RAF Swinderby (1654 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Coningsby (97 Squadron) and RAF Warboys (NTU) . Aircraft flown in were Botha, Welllngton, Stirling, Martinet and Lancaster. He flew 17 night operations with 90 Squadron and 2 night operations with 97 Squadron. Targets were Mining (4), Hamburg (3), Remscheid, Turin, Peenemunde, Berlin (2), Nuremburg, Monchen Gladbach, Kassel, Mannheim, Leverkusen and with 97 Squadron Ladbergen and Rheine. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant Brayshaw and Flight Lieutenant Runnacles. On a training flight on 10th November 1944 his aircraft was posted as ”missing” and he was “ Death presumed” in May 1946.

He was stationed at RAF Yatesbury (2 Radio School), RAF Manby (Empire Air Armament School), RAF West Freugh (4 OAFU), RAF Honeybourne (24 OTU), RAF Topcliffe (1659 HCU), RAF Skipton-on-Swale (433 RCAF Squadron), RAF Warboys (PNTU), RAF Downham Market (635 Squadron) and RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Elgin (20 OTU). Aircraft flown in were Dominie, Anson, Whitley, Halifax, Lancaster and Wellington. He flew 32 night operations (two early returns) with 433 Squadron and 7 night and 7 day operations with 635 Squadron, a total of 46 (two early return). Targets were Berlin, mining, Stuttgart, Schweinfurt, Dusseldorf, Karlsruhe, Essen, Nuremburg, Aulnoye, unspecified French targets, Ruhr unspecified, Dortmund, Boulogne, Dessau, Kassel, Wuppertal, Zwiebrucken, Nurnberg, Bremen,Bottrop, Osnabruck, Kiel, Potsdam and Berchtesgarten. His pilot on operations were Pilot Officer Smith, Flying Officer Eyolfson, Pilot Officer Watson and Squadron Leader Ashworth.
