Interview with Christoph Wagner Brausewetter
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Christoph Wagner Brausewetter (b. 1929) recounts the hardships civilians endured inside a shelter, the risks involved and the fact they spent there more time there than at home. Maintains that the worst year was 1943, when aircraft were no longer able to take off and Germany lost its air supremacy. Mentions his neighbour Field Marshal Erhard Milch and how his mother got acquainted with Goering’s wife. Tells of how a bomb splinter nearly missed his baby brother and how this triggered a religious epiphany. Describes moments of humour when, waiting for the next bombing, they wondered if something had happened to the bomber crews. Narrates how he was fascinated by the searchlights forming a cross when coning an enemy aircraft and the moment he stumbled upon the shrunken corpse of an allied pilot in the Grünwald forest.

Interview with Maria Domanovszky
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Maria Domanovszky (b. 1937) recounts how she threw herself into a swampy ditch when under fire and how she lay down praying and hoping to get back home safely. Describes German soldiers with torn and dirty uniforms escaping from a burning forest. Tells memories of the first encounter with black American soldiers: they were friendly, looked well-dressed and threw chocolate to a crowd of village children. When the adults standing nearby realised that the soldiers were no cause of alarm, they asked for chocolate as well.

Interview with Fausta Maggioni
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Fausta Maggioni recalls memories of her wartime life in Milan. She describes a sizeable shelter reinforced with wooden props, a little bag with the few valuables she had always to bring along, as well as the many duties of her father as warden, who checked the attic for incendiaries and bombs with a gas mask and small fire extinguisher. Emphasises how air raid precautions were informally learned and how sometimes children remain at home watching the bombing, guessing the points of impact. Describes emotions swinging from excitement to fear, people reciting the rosary or other prayers and stresses the fear of losing her treasured toys. Recollects a bombing at school, the dash to the shelter among incendiaries, target indicators, and how she stumbled upon three armed boys and the subsequent runoff to home. Recollects the gruesome sight of corpses at the entrance of the Mosucco cemetery and a fire exchange between fascists and partisans in which two men were killed. She describes the war as a fratricidal struggle between young men who had no other choice than being called up or join the partisans. Recalls an example of a young man’s bravado who remained in the middle of the street yelling 'Fire! I’m here'. Remembers German troops retreating, as well as the elation of her father, a man of the socialist persuasion, on hearing of Mussolini’s hanging. Gives an account of her post-war life: his father toiling as a construction worker, her job as a seamstress, the first radio set she had, her first home with a bathroom, and a doll handcrafted by her mother.

Interview with Carla Griva
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Carla Griva (b. 1935) describes different attitudes and various coping strategies of people inside a shelter in Turin: reciting the rosary, putting their hands over their ears to avoid listening, storytelling, and asking children to practice multiplication tables. Remembers an old man who continued sleeping in his own bed in spite of bombing and gives an account of how he was accidentally killed in the last days of war.

Interview with Erika Gautsch
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Erika Gautsch (b. 1928) describes her wartime experience of being inside a shelter and the people she met there: an old sick man with his wife, who was incessantly reciting the rosary, and children clinging to their mothers. Emphasises tension and gripping fear with involuntary moments of humour. Following an explosion, numerous pieces of paper rained into the shelter and a boy said 'mum, look, the Tommy sends us wrapping paper'.

Interview with Efrem Colombi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Efrem Colombi recalls his care-free childhood, initially in the Bergamo countryside and then in Milan. Emphasises his life-long radical anti-Clericalism and recounts how he ran away several times from Catholic boarding schools because of his rebellious attitude. Mentions some bombings from which he escaped unharmed and recalls the 20 October 1944 Milan bombing, describing its effects on the Gorla and Precotto neighbourhoods. Recollects aircraft suddenly appearing on a surprisingly crisp day; his primary school was destroyed; he and his friends arriving out of curiosity among scenes of devastation, the appalling sight of a body being pulled out from debris, and hundreds of white coffins at the funeral. Recalls anecdotes of the Milan working class in the 1940s and describes wartime episodes: a hand grenade found in the Martesana canal that exploded close to barracks; his Jewish name prompting anti-Semitism; life at a holiday summer camp and as an evacuee; his mother throwing away his junior fascist uniform after the collapse of the regime; daily life in a ‘Casa di ringhiera’ (tenement with communal balconies); coming back home on an American tank at the end the war. Stresses the importance of family; gives an account of how his mother remarried when his father was declared missing in action, only to reappear after the end of the war; recounts anecdotes about friends and relatives. Curses allied air forces because they never apologised, but sympathises with aircrew, being too young to be aware of the consequences of their action. Links his strong atheist stance with the sight of young, innocent victims.

Interview with Vittorio Finauri
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Vittorio Finauri (b. 1931) remembers the first bombing of Foligno on 22 November 1943. Explains that it was completely unexpected and people were caught unprepared, so bombs aimed at nearby barracks resulted in a heavy death toll. Describes how some friends were accidentally killed while playing with a hand grenade left in a house previously occupied by British soldiers, stresses that he survived by pure chance and mentions how the act prompted him to reflect on his faith. Remembers his mixed feelings towards the Allies at the end of the war and explains how he had hoped the conflict would have ended differently.

Interview with Santina Colombo
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Santina Colombo describes her early life in a family of farmers, her father a fervent socialist. She mentions the start of the war announced on the radio and gives a detailed account of civilian life in wartime Milan: scarce food, growing vegetables on small plots, home rearing of geese, and the constant fear for the fate of enlisted relatives. Describes bombings and the rush for safety in a nearby basement, men and women praying together during the alarm, and hugging each other after the all-clear signal. Recalls the constant fear that her home would be destroyed and the trauma of seeing corpses on the road. Mentions the Cascina Bellaria killing and describes how her husband, a partisan, narrowly escaped death. Describes fascist violence, leading to acts of revenge after the war. Mentions her aunt and cousin living with the Germans, the latter to become pregnant. Speaks of aircrew as odious and detestable, and scorns on Mussolini and Hitler.

Interview with Sara Ventriglia
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Sara Ventriglia, the daughter of a Jewish mother and a Catholic father, recalls her early life in wartime Milan. She describes the alarm being sounded, she and her family getting quickly dressed to reach a nearby shelter. She recollects moments inside the shelter emphasising how unpleasant it was on winter nights and mentions the terrifying sight of a building engulfed in flames. She narrates the trials and tribulations of her Jewish grandmother who was arrested in 1943 when trying to escape to Switzerland, likely to be a Holocaust victim. Speaks with an affection for her grandmother and emphasises how the grief is still alive and present. She describes the trials and tribulations of her Jewish relatives forced to live under false identities, one of them deported to Ravensbruck and the subsequent lives of those who escaped the Holocaust. She recounts how she was questioned by a Fascist militiaman for contravening blackout regulations during curfew. Several different wartime anecdotes: how her father was injured when the train he was travelling on was strafed, draft-dodgers hidden in concealed rooms, and the constant presence of Pippo.

Letter to his wife from Herbert Gray.
No. 12
Starts with suggestion that a recent news film of daylight operation to Le Havre, which he was on, gives a good idea of what bombing is like. However as most of his operations were at night he goes on to describe these. Describes emotions and preparations for a typical operation. Provides a detailed description of activities, fears, emotions and activities. Includes looking out for other aircraft on run up to target, describes searchlights and anti-aircraft fire, the wait for bomb release, engagement by night fighters and crew response. Describes most loathed sensation as being caught in another aircraft’s slipstream and delights of welcome cup of coffee when crossing English coast.

Interview with Bob Frost. One
Bob Frost recounts experiencing the London Blitz as a member of the Auxiliary Fire Service. He volunteered for the Royal Air Force and trained at the Air Gunnery School at Evanton, Scotland. He was then posted to the Operational Training Unit at RAF Chipping Warden. He describes an aircraft crash in Lincolnshire while at Chipping Warden. His operational posting was to 150 Squadron at RAF Snaith. On an operation to Essen, two of the Lancaster’s engines were damaged and the crew bailed out over Belgium. Frost describes being taken in by a farming family and sheltered by the resistance. Reunited with his crew, they were passed along the Comet Line through Belgium and France, being accompanied from Paris to St Jean de Luz by Janine de Greef. They met Dedee de Jongh who, together with a Basque smuggler, accompanied them across the Pyrenees into Spain. From Madrid they were driven to Gibraltar and flown to the United Kingdom. Bob Frost did not undertake any further operational flying. He was eventually posted to RAF Bridgnorth, where he met his wife Daphne, who was in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.

Interview with Rosemary Dorricott
Rosemary Dorricott is the widow of Leonard William Dorricott DFM. During the war years she was a young child in Skegness. She was six years old when war broke out. She recalls the air raids on the town and the rationing and blackouts that became a way of life for the population. The war particularly touched her life when a school friend was not at school one day and she learned that a stricken Lancaster had crashed into the farmhouse and the family had been killed. She often heard the Lancasters as they flew overhead and would say a prayer for them. On VE day she listened as a lone sailor sang a Vera Lynn song on the steps of the cinema.
Leonard, her husband, was a navigator with 460 Squadron based in Binbrook. She was with him when he was presented with his Bomber Command clasp in front of the two Lancasters at RAF Coningsby.

Interview with Bernie Harris. Two
Bernie Harris joined the Air Training Corps and volunteered for the Royal Air Force, joining in April 1943 and training to become an air gunner. Mentions his father serving in the Royal Flying Corps. Witnessed the London Blitz as a young boy. Describes training and operational flying conditions. Gives a vivid, detailed, first-hand account of Operation Manna. Expresses his view on wartime events, including Chamberlain’s speech, the North African campaign, the Phoney War and the Russian contribution to the Allied victory. Explains why, in his opinion, the Allies decided not to bomb the concentration camps during the war. He was de-mobbed in 1947, after a final posting to Italy with 112 Squadron. After the war he set up his own business leasing vending machines. He later became involved in an association of ex-servicemen who were involved in Operation Manna.

Interview with Priscilla Henwood
Priscilla was encouraged by a friend’s father to join the 600 Squadron in anticipation of the war. She was called up and was based at Finsbury Barracks, involved in recruitment. Priscilla also worked on the telephone exchange at Clerkenwell.
In October 1940, she was posted to RAF Bassingbourn, an Operational Training Unit for Wellingtons. Hope Embry, wife of Basil Embry was stationed there.
Priscilla was sent to the Air Ministry War Room in Whitehall and received correspondence in pneumatic tube system. She recalls an extraordinary message about Amy Johnson crashing into the Thames. She would see Churchill and his wife. They provided the Cabinet War Office with information, including statistics.
Priscilla went on a corporal’s course and was stationed briefly at RAF Hooton Park. After promotion to sergeant, she was sent on an officers’ course at Loughborough and then posted to RAF Tangmere and the ground-controlled interception (GCI) radar station at RAF Durrington. Priscilla was put in charge of the GCI station near RAF Ford. She did another course at Alnwick and was then made adjutant at RAF Biggin Hill.
Priscilla expresses her disappointment with how Bomber Command was treated after the war. She praises the land girls and mechanics, who were often overlooked.
Priscilla went to RAF Montford Bridge and was an adjutant at RAF Rednal. She returned to the Air Ministry War Room in 1943 and was involved in the Far East operations until the end of the war, monitoring signals. On D-Day they all went down to Buckingham Palace.

Interview with Raymond Moore
Raymond Moore flew 31 operations as a flight engineer with 408 Squadron. He describes initial training at Skegness and then further training at Cosford, Halton and St Athan. He describes the crewing-up procedure at Eastmoor and describes the accommodation at various RAF stations including Linton, where he was billeted at Beningbrough Hall, and at Lindholme. He also gives vivid accounts of difficult trips, including high winds on a Berlin operation on the 24th of March 1944 and being coned by searchlights in the Rostock and Bremen areas and being thrown about as the pilot did a corkscrew manoeuvre.
