An American Invitation
For a very special celebration
They made we WAAFS feel
Quite feminine on this occasion
By pinning a beautiful rose-glorious petals
Onto our lapels
The Huge Hanger
Built to house Forts and Liberators
Was crowded with men
Oh don’t tell me
They’ll be chasing us again!
One soon whispered in my ear
I hope I don’t have to spend the night
Avoiding another American “dear”.
They were all standing
Silently in awe
What were they waiting for?
Gazing at the band
The largest I’d ever seen
Conducted by a bespectacled man in military dress
Am I in a dream?
A small man not much bigger than me
Making seemingly effortless music
Dancing
[deleted] Glee
Awe
Privileged [/deleted]
Glenn.

THE WRENS PARTY
We were invited to a WRENS party
On romantic St Valentines eve
The venue was down in the coastal town
An invite we were flattered to receive
Such excitement you wouldn’t believe
We were taken there by Station transport
Sounds good! but between me and you
It meant cramped in the back of a lorry
Packed like sardines in our best blue
The dance hall was romantically decorated
With hearts of course, and candles aglow
We were greeted by our charming hostesses
Who had put on a really good show
There were handsome young sailors to dance with
And bearded officers anchored on shore
We WAAFS were very much in demand
As they whirled us around the dance floor
THEN the attention we were receiving
Began to upset some of the WRENS
They took a dim view of the girls in blue
Stealing their partners and [inserted] their [/inserted] special friends
They seated us under the candles
To partake of the cakes and the wine
To us on our RAF rations
The Navy’s catering suited us fine
But – when we got back to our billets
We were very vexed to find
From the candles they’d seated us under
Were cascades of wax down our backs-most unkind
Of course it could have been accidental
Our sisters in service the WRENS
Could never, no never even in jealousy
Have thought up such a revenge
But invited again to a WRENS party
Whether it be on ship or on shore
We will arm ourselves with candle snuffers
And SNUFF out their candles for sure!!!
