27th June, 1940.
My darling Dad,
I’m awfully sorry I haven’t written for some Time but we have had another change & are working very hard. We spent twelve days at Hasting. It was very pleasant. We did not like the first two days but then got used to it. The programme there was an early morning dip in the sea. This was followed by Parade. We then had maths & signals – the latter is Morse Code – After this P.T. – On Wednesdays we have organised games such as Tennis water-polo, etc . Also a couple of Antigas lectures are thrown in. we have not yet started Navigation but I don’t think it will be long now. After din [sic] we were free to go out. I have acquired quite a habit now of
[page break]
going in for a swim almost everyday.
We are now at Torquay. It is a very picturesque place. I forgot to mention socially Hastings was quite amusing. I did not do much apart from swimming. The programme here is more or less the same as at Hastings. The only difference here is that the R.A.F. have never been here before. The result is that everyone stares at us when we drill or march to the dining Hall. It is very amusing. There are masses of girls here so as soon as the R.A.F. is payed [sic] we shall have to beat the town up. the bathing here is not very good as it is very shallow for a long way. I hear however that there are some very nice places close by.
The weather here is supposed to be very hot & tropical. We have
[page break]
not noticed it so far as we are not having really good weather at the moment.
The Political news is terrible. I cannot understand the attitude Taken up by the French government. They could easily have fought on from their colonies and Taken the fleet, Air force and all available men & materials. All this will be hopelessly out of date by the Time you receive this letter.
Incidentally Cecil one of my best pals at College was at Hastings under training as a pilot. He is now at Torquay. I met him the other day. As I know where he is I shall be seeing a lot of him.
I am here with most of my friends. Half of us our [sic] in the same room. We are billeted in
[page break]
Hotels, run completely by us of course. Our room faces some Tennis Courts and the bay. The view is lovely.
We work very hard here, and am just about all in at the end of the day. I am looking very fit and well Tanned [sic].
At Hastings we had a couple of Air Raid Warnings at Hastings. The night we slept on the Concrete floor of an Air Raid Shelter. Nothing happened & we didn’t here[sic] anything. Anyway we were too sleepy to worry.
Don’t worry about us & keep your chin up.
No more to-day. God bless & keep you for us.
Love Dave. [hand drawn picture of cap]

I am afraid this will get over weight for the Air Mail if I add a sheet. Dave came in on Saturday the 6 th at 10.p.m. looking absolutely fine. His cap had a white bit in front something like in my attempt at drawing, this is to show they are Air Crew & are they proud of it! We gave him a very happy 18 hours & were glad to have him that long. Steve & his friend John Porace were here for the weekend too. We saw him off at Paddington, 5 minutes from here & met some of his lot. Nice boys. All the little mothers sporting their R.A.F. brooches (winged), & smiled bravely, grateful for the brief glimpse of their boys. Dave took back plenty of luck, 50 cigarettes & my tooth paste! Love Baby. [inserted in different hand]

My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letters, the cable & the £2. It was very sweet of you.
As we got some back flying pay a short while back I bought a few things I need badly such as a decent Khaki shirt a shorts & a pair of shoes. The Khaki shirt & shorts are very well cut indeed. I had no difficulty in [deleted] changing [/deleted] cashing the cheque.
I have had several letters from Mum lately, one from Steve & one from my friend Darnie (in Rhodisia) who wrote to England still thinking I was there. Mum forwarded the letter.
You must not worry if you don’t

hear from any of us sometimes, as very often letters take some time. I received one from Mum the other day which was posted three weeks before one I received a week ago. I am so glad to hear the car you got from head office is so nice.
Please [deleted] congratul [/deleted] give my best wishes to Cynthia on her engagement. I hope she will be very happy. Liza the girl who was in Naini, I expect you remember her has also become engaged to a young Scotsman. She was a very swell girl.
I have done quite a bit of motoring the last three afternoons. I went in a friend’s car, an old tourer buick. It is jolly good. She is something like the dodge we had but of course not in anything as good a condition. Still she is a good bus & we get a kick out of her.
My friends and I went to Mossel Bay for New Year. Just the Tuesday & Wednesday. We put up at a hotel. I had a very enjoyable time. As there

was no room in any of the hotels we had two ghastly rooms at the back. we called it the Ritzy Rooms but it didn’t interfere with our fun.
I thought of the three of you at midnight. D.V. there will be better days ahead soon.
On the Wednesday I did some surf riding. It was great fun. You hold the surf board a sort of thin plank and wait till an enormous breaker comes along. As it hits you on the back side you leap forward on to the surf board pressing it hard against the body. If successful you then shoot off towards the shore & are taken right up. incidentally during the whole operation you are never out of your depth.

In the later afternoon we swam again this time at a sheltered inlet known as the point. We had a jolly good time and came back that evening looking as brown as [deleted] t [/deleted] berries.
I took a number of photographs while we were there. I ordered a whole heap of copies to-day & will send them on to you in a couple of days. At the latest in a week. I hope you received the last lot. I sent. They were sent by Air Mail so shouldn’t have taken long. They are fine snaps and you will like them. All three I am sending you shortly are also fine photographs. I at first regretted having bought the camera as the first spools were all utter failures. Since then however I have taken another four spools & they are all excellent. Actually all that really was the matter was that I hadn’t quite got the hang of the various shutter speeds etc. on the camera.
I am getting on with the flying. We know quite a bit of navigation now. We have also started photography from the air & should be night flying shortly.

The flying is interesting, though you get so used to it that one gets quite bored sometimes especially when you are not flying the machine yourself. Still I enjoy it.
The weather lately has been the damned limit. Four days ago the temperature was 1060 in the shade & about 1300 in the sun. we were absolutely grilled. This continued for three days. Great clouds accumulated, the heat was intense. Everything was quiet & then the storm came. There was torrential rain (just as in India) and a terrific wind. One of the lecture rooms had its roof blown off. All the charts etc were ruined (in that room) also One of the [deleted][indecipherable][/deleted] billets last its roof. But everything ended happily. It became much

cooler & to-day we have all felt chilly as the temperature this morning was 590.
Quite a considerable drop.
Mum mentioned that Phil [indecipherable] had sent me a birthday card. Please thank him for me & give him my love.
Lately we have been to a couple of films. The other night we saw “Mr Smith goes to Washington.” I had seen it before in London with Mum & Steve. It is a jolly good show.
At first we were not having too good a time here but now all know a number of people we have had a really good time for Xmas & the New Year. At the moment however most of our friends have gone to Mossel Bay for the holidays. They should be coming back shortly.
I had a game of Tennis before Xmas. The players were rotten at Tennis but very nice people. Take things easy Dad & don’t go injuring yourself through being over zealous at Tennis or anything like that.
No more now, will send the snaps & write in a couple of days. God bless you.
Your loving son Dave.

Cape Town.
7/2/41.
My darling Dad,
At the present moment we are in Cape Town awaiting posting. There was a slight hitch somewhere. We were supposed to go somewhere but it all fell through so we are here for the moment. I have remustered [deleted] [indecipherable] [/deleted] [inserted] as [/inserted] an air gunner as I couldn’t manage the navigation. I was never really happy sitting at a desk and working out a lot of stuff. You know my nature was never one which allowed of sitting down & working out things at great length. As a matter of fact if we go home I am going to apply for remuster as a pilot, failing which I shall be quite happy as an air gunner especially in view of the fact that I like shooting so much. The only disadvantage is that one has to go back to 2/6 a day. However it is only for a short time & once you finish the course you get [indecipherable] good pay again.
Everyone thinks I should make a very good gunner. My navigation instructors last words to me were “please shoot down the first Meschersmit [sic] [deleted] to [/deleted] [deleted] for [/deleted] to me.” Thanks for the money it has come in very useful in view of the fact that I am now getting 2/6 a day. I sent you a present a wallet made from ostrich skin. They are quite valuable & I thought it would be a good [indecipherable word] as Oudtshoorn is famous for ostrich. I hope you like it. I have bought
[page break]
one for Steve. For Mum I bought a leather key holder with a map of South Africa stamped on it & some quite expensive silk stockings which should come in useful.
Now don’t be worried if at any time you don’t hear from me. You will know I have gone on somewhere. I shall cable as soon as I arrive at any particular destination & give you the address.
I have taken any number of photographs lately, mostly landscape while the train was moving. I have also taken a number here in Cape Town some of them are jolly good. Actually I had 56 snaps developed, and I still have several spools to be done. It costs a lot of money but it is worth it as it is a permanent record of my stay in this country. Also it is interesting for you & Mum. I hope you liked the second lot I sent you. I shall send you some more very shortly as soon as I have had some more developed.
We are having a smashing time here. It’s the first time we are really having a fling. Mind you despite petty irritations we have always been very happy. My friend at Torquay, Ajan who came here on the second course has also remustered as an air gunner. Several chaps have remustered. At the moment we are at Wynberg Military Camp. There is a fine canteen here, where all the work is done voluntarily by women. They are damn decent and work terrifically hard. One of them has been a real brick & introduced us to any number of very nice girls all damn pretty too. We have swum twice at a swimming pool in a private house & then to several parties. The other night [deleted] I [/deleted] two of us went to a party. It was a wedding anniversary celebration. The husband
[page break]
is up north. We had a real party, champagne etc. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We went to a place called the blue moon [sic] where there is dancing till about 2 o’clock. You take your own drinks. It was the first time for six months that I got anywhere nearly pickled. Mind you it doesn’t how much I drink I can still always behave myself. It was my job to cheer the girl up as she was feeling somewhat blue. [indecipherable words] A few nights ago we went to a house & had dinner. Half the party then went to the blue moon [sic]. I stayed behind & we danced at home so to speak. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a very nice girl there called Shirley. She is rather spoilt but otherwise she is O.K. I am seeing her to-day at 5.30. Both Shirley & her sister – the latter is one of the nicest sweetest girls I have ever met – do secretarial work at their father’s farm. Shirley is picking me up in her car & I am going to watch her do her work. We are then going bathing at a sea side resort a few miles out. The bathing is lovely there. After that she is taking me home to supper & the two of us will then dance. I hope all this sort of stuff doesn’t bore you Dad as it is quite a long rigamarole. Anyway you will be glad to know
[page break]
I am really enjoying myself.
Nearly everybody here has been jolly decent to us. The day after we arrived here a couple of us rang up a girl we met at Oudtshoorn & she took us home to dinner. We drove all round & I took some snaps of the Rhodes Memorial etc. We then went dancing to the blue moon [sic]. Another night a gentleman stopped in the street in his car, took us to a place called the Delmonico & gave us some drinks & then something to eat. It was damn decent of him. Last night we had a quiet party at a lady’s house. No frolics just a nice quiet evening at home. They gave us a good dinner & lots of beer & were awfully decent altogether.
You can have no conception what the scenery is like here. It is a revellation [sic] as you will see from the photographs I shall send in a day or so. There are still a few places I should like to photograph. Places of interest both historic & social. My camera is doing fine now.
It was a pity my not getting through the navigation course but I said right at the beginning that I was just temperamentally unsuited for the job. It is no good if you are not really happy at. I like the idea of air gunning. You will be hearing about me shortly in that respect!
No more today. Look after yourself. God bless you.
Lots of love from
Your loving son
[underlined] Dave. [/underlined]

My darling Dad,
Sorry for not having posted the letter enclosed with this one earlier but I just didn’t have any money. We have lived on practically nothing for weeks but managed pretty well. We shall now get regular pay - £1 1s per week till the end of the course.
Quite a lot of things have happened since I last wrote. We were at Port Elizabeth for a fortnight & we then came to East London as you will have seen from the address. After we had been at P.E. for a fortnight we again brought up the subject of a speedy training. We were interviewed by the adjutant who was awfully decent and promised us action within 24 hours. The promised action came off. Next morning we were told that we had been granted ten days leave [indecipherable word] berth accommodation on the train for Cape Town. Our leave was scheduled to commence at 4.30p.m. At 4.00p.m. word came through that we had been posted to East London & off we went. None of us were very happy [deleted] to be [/deleted] at P.E. and were not sorry to leave. The camp here is a lively one. Jolly good food & pretty nearly no red tape. What is more we have got
[page break]
cracking on the course right away. It is entirely a S. African course usually consisting of 30 S. Africans but the six of us have been included. The course is a very good one & the teaching thorough. I am enjoying the course immensely it is much more in my line. We have been on the range once to get our eye in. We shot with .22 rifles, I got 135 – 150. Not as good as I should have liked it to be. The course is done in two sections. 4 weeks of instruction on guns, morse code (eventually to receive at 20 words a minute) & aerial sighting. It is very interesting. The [deleted][indecipherable word][/deleted] second section also 4 weeks consists of flying - shooting in the air & dual flying – the latter pleases me immensely. In the first session we fire machine guns on the ground & also camera guns. I think we are all going to enjoy this. Incidentally we are still [underlined] R.A.F. [/underlined]
East London is a quiet sea-side resort but we are having a grand time here & have met any number of people including a number of girls. I have not fallen for any of them. Some of them are very sweet all the same. The very first day we were here we met some Scotchmen & a S. African officer at a hotel. A party of 7 of us had a terrific binge. It did us [deleted] the [/deleted] a world of good. We felt new men. Since then we have been out nearly every evening & have been taken everywhere. – To the flicks, pub-crawling, bathing & to peoples homes etc. Everyone has been really damn decent to us.
You will be glad to hear that I am taking an intelligent interest in this course. That is definitely a good sign. I intend to be a damn good

Air gunner. I am sure I shall like it.
I have quite a number of snaps to send you [deleted] whitch [/deleted] which I shall send on shortly. I have got into touch with Thomas Cook’s regarding the [deleted] cable yo [/deleted] money you sent. It was damn decent of you Dad. I did not like asking for it. But we thought we were going home & had a last fling in S. Africa as we thought. Also our new rate of pay 3s per day is not bad but it doesn’t cover a great deal. Still the main thing is that we are happy at East London, almost as happy as we were at Cape Town. I shall send a photograph of Shirley the girl I met at Cape Town. We had some good times there. We may go there on leave after the course. But I am not thinking of that at the moment. I am working instead. I pay attention at lectures & then do a spot of consolidating [deleted] at [/deleted] after lectures.
Some of us went roller skating at P.E. and enjoyed it. Apart from the little married girl and her friend I had no regrets in leaving P.E. I met her brother here yesterday he had motored in for the week-end from P.E. He is a nice lad. I was very pleased to see him.
I play quite a bit of Table Tennis these days. The only other exercise I get is swimming at weekends with sunbathing combined. I am getting quite brown. No more today. God bless you. Love & kisses from
Your loving son [underlined] David. [/underlined]

U/T Air Gunner,
No 41, Air School,
East London,
2nd April, 1941.
My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter which I was very pleased to get. Actually the ones addressed to P.E. were held up a bit as we had left for East London. Thanks awfully for the cash Dad, we all needed it. I lent a couple of pounds to some of the lads until their money arrives from home. Mum sent me the sporting magazine in which Steve featured. I thought it was jolly fine. Old Steve did very well. Everyone remarked about the likeness between the two of us. Please wish Mark every happiness from me.
Dad the failure in the observer’s course had nothing to do with going out. In fact for the first 6 weeks of the course we didn’t know anybody. I only went to six dances at the very most during the 3½ months of the course. I went bathing only about 5 times accompanied by girls. It was just that I didn’t like the type of work & was temperamentally unsuited for the steady sort of job it is. Anyway I am doing well at the air gunning & thoroughly enjoy it. I shall explain all about the gunner’s course later in this letter. Sorry I haven’t written regularly but will do so
[page break]
in future. We had so many moves & everything was unsettled. I shall write again in 4 or 5 days. I am taking some negatives to the photographers to-day & shall send them in my next letter if they are ready. They are some of the snaps I took at Cape Town & are very good.
I hope you received the ostrich skin wallet I sent you. It should just about have reached you by now. I shall send you a [indecipherable word] set a little later as your birthday present. I had a cable from Mum two days ago saying she had received the presents I sent [deleted] to [/deleted] for both Mum & Steve. It mentioned that a pal of mine had called around & delivered the presents. The cable said all was well.
Now for news about the course. So far we have done three out of the four exams we have to do. The pass mark for each individual subject is 50% & one must have a total agregate [sic] of 60% over all the subjects. I got 80% for the Vickers Gun, 60½% for Aerial Sighting & unofficially over 70% for the Browning Gun. All that is left is the Gunnery General. This consists of one paper covering everything we have done. In a week we shall have finished the theory & ground instruction. We then begin flying. – Consists of shooting from Air to ground & Air to Air. Also a little dual control flying – this is really good news. We have done
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined]
a fair amount of shooting on the ground with machine guns. I am enjoying it. In a about a fortnight we should have done the Gunnery General paper & then we only have three weeks practical flying etc to be done. It is amazing how much harder it is to shoot with a machine gun. Our flying here is done in open cockpit biplanes. They are very manueverable [sic] & it should be great fun. At Oudtshoorn we flew in Avro Anson reconaisance [sic] planes. They are very steady & do not give you a thrill. We have got on really well in this camp. At first there was a good bit of reserve on both sides that is our lads & the S. African lads but finding that we were quite normal everything went allright [sic] & we have made some good friends among the S.African lads.
East London suits us down to the ground. The people are charming & we are having a good time. The work is not however being neglected as you can see from the results. My total aggregate is over 70% at the moment. We have made a lot of friends here both old and young. A couple of young girls who help at the canteen took us out the other day & we played golf. I thought it would be fairly easy but at first could not even hit the damn ball. We improved a bit towards the end.
To-day a game of cricket was arranged but
[page break]
unfortunately it has just been cancelled. I had a game of soccer the other day. I enjoyed it but felt terribly out of condition & was very stiff for two days. I had a second game the other day & didn’t feel quite so bad. We have P.T. now to keep us fit. In those soccer games we played a navel team or rather two but lost 5-0, and 5-1. None of us had played together & the main trouble was lack of combination.
I have been to two dances & to the flicks three times since we have been in East London that is nearly 4 weeks.
Yesterday we went to a friend’s house & worked for the Browning gun exam we had. The girls at the house were very sweet & insisted on us concentrating properly. That is the exam in which I have got approx: 75% unofficially.
Some photographs were taken of [deleted] f [/deleted] the course. They are excellent. I shall probably send you one though I hope it won’t get spoilt on the way as it is mounted.
No more to-day. God bless you.
Lots of love from
your loving
[underlined] son David. [/underlined]
[underlined] P.S. [/underlined] Hope you like the snap enclosed of the course soccer team.

U/T Air Gunner,
No [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] [inserted] 41 [/inserted] Air School,
East London,
20th April, 1941.
My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter. This is only a short note before I go out for the week end. I shall write again during the week.
About East London, it is certainly Africa. I should have thought they would have stuck that down on the cable as the address from which I sent it. Unless of course they just put down East London.
We have exactly two weeks of the course to go. To-day we had the general exam. The last one. I think I made it too. So I am feeling fairly relieved & just in the mood for a good week-end. I have no idea what we do or where we go after the course, but if you don’t hear from me at any time don’t worry as you will know I am in the process of another transfer and cannot write. I have become very attached to this country & will seriously think about coming out here again after the war.
We have done any amount of flying [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] during the week which has just finished. It has been most
[page break]
interesting. The camera gunning is finished & from Monday the real shooting starts. First from the air to targets on the ground, then air to air shooting i.e. at a target towed by another aircraft & finally a spot of dual flying, i.e. taking over the controls. Though we do not do any landing or taking off.
In the camera guns we first started firing at another aircraft on our tails & then from the side – a beam shot is the term used. Then came aerial combat. In this you are thrown about the sky, loops & flick rolls etc. Meanwhile you do your best to fire at the enemy whenever you get the opportunity. They certainly chuck you around a bit. It is grand fun though a bit of a strain. The strain on a really fast machine must be colossal.
We are getting on excellently with the S. African lads on the course & they hope we go on with them to the next station. I don’t quite know whether I should like to go home or stay on here & go up North, that is leaving family feelings out of it, because naturally there is no place like home.
I take my hat off to the Greeks. They are 100%. The Yugoslaves [sic] put up a good show though the odds were too great for them. Still they went down fighting like men. – I only went out twice during the week as I stayed in to do a spot of work & write some letters. As I haven’t the opportunity to go to town early enough to get my films done I am asking some one to
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined]
do it for me. & will send them in my letter during the week. Actually I am asking a girl friend to take them into town for me. She is a charming girl & I am going to see her this evening.
Thanks for the Easter Cable, sorry I didn’t send one but [indecipherable word] as we fly till 6 oclock [sic] every evening we cannot get into town earlier enough. I shall be cabling at the earliest opportunity.
Our stay in east London has been a really happy one & we have made a number of good friends. Yesterday I collected the prize for the table tennis 10/- worth of stuff, such as tooth paste, shaving cream cigarettes etc. I believe they are organising another tournament but it will be a handicap affair. The gentleman who ran the show is a friend who I have been out with several times. He says I shall be heavily handicapped. Still it ought to be good fun.
I had a letter from a girl friend in Cape Town the other day. She was a nurse & we met her at Oudtshoorn when she went there for a couple of days holiday. She is a damn nice kid & was awfully good to a couple of us when we first arrived in Cape Town from Oudtshoorn & didn’t know anybody.
We seem to be having a spot of rain again. I
[page break]
hope it clears up as a rainy week end is an awful nuisance. Still even the rain will not damp my spirits to-day, as I am feeling grand more so in view of the fact that our last examination is now done with.
I hope you are getting on well with business. Don’t be too lonely Dad, I am sure better days will soon be here. Don’t worry about your big son. He is in grand form, enjoying both work & play. I hope soon to be doing some good stuff for the country.
No more to-day Dad. Look after yourself. God bless you. Lots of love from your
Ever loving son
[underlined] Dave. [/underlined]

No 41 AIR SCHOOL.
EAST LONDON.
15th May. 1941.
My darling Dad,
Thanks ever so much for your letter. I am so pleased to hear you liked the wallet. It has not only sentimental value as a present but also value as a S. African Curio.
You should find the Lewis gun most interesting & find fun to fire.
At long last I am a fully trained man. I feel very proud with my Brevet up – the gunners half-wing with A.G. in front. You will see what it looks like from a photograph I shall send shortly. It really feels good being fully qualified. All of us passed thank goodness & our friends in East London are very pleased. Thanks for the cable congratulating me. Also for sending the cash. It was sweet of you Dad.
[page break]
Now that the course is done with we are having a rollicking time. The S. African boys have gone on to their new station but the six of us have remained here, at the moment free of all duties.
I did very well in morse code. The six R.A.F. only had to receive morse at Ten words per minute. I decided to have a shot with the S. African boys. I got 100% at Ten words per minute& 95 1/2% at eighteen words per minute. Not bad considering we only did at the most [deleted] ei [/deleted] six to eight words at home.
We had a qualifying course binge. All the officers turned up and we got cracking. By the end of the evening we were all quite tight. We had some fun, breaking into the officers mess at 4 in the morning & then being tipped out of bed at 5 by some of the fellows including the officer in charge of us. He is one of the whitest men I ever met.

There were speeches at the party. I was asked to speak on behalf of the six R.A.F. attached to the course. My speech was short & sweet. Mentioning we did not think much of them at first but having got to know them were damn sorry to be separated from them. It went down well. They are a damn fine crowd of blokes & I was genuinely sorry to be parting from them as we made some good friends.
At the moment I am just about completing a week’s local leave. A friend in town has put me up – He (Desmond) is a grand chap. He has a small sports car which is at my disposal whenever he is not using it. As he goes out with my girls sister it amounts to almost all the time. He has really been damn decent to me. You should see me shooting around in his sports car, its great fun. I have just had the
[page break]
most terrific week. Desmond has six months leave from the Army for business reasons. All his friends (a fine crowd of fellows) are down here on leave & we have been hitting the high spots. – In a big way too. – We are only young once This is properly[sic] the last chance I will get of dashing around as we should be in action before very long so I am making the most of my time. I have a lovely little girl friend here. We have had two terrific quarrels but otherwise we have got on very well indeed. I shall send you a photo of her shortly.
Desmond & my programme at the moment is as follows. Five sets of Tennis every morning a quiet afternoon & then out with our girl friends in the evening. In the evening we usually go to a dance or for a drink somewhere. The S. Africans have really given us a square deal
[page break]

both as regards work & play. This girl friend of mine is really lovely Dad. I am sure you would like her. She is the second girl I have liked in this country. That is nearly [deleted] [indecipherable] [/deleted] 8 months. Not too bad considering we have been to four places. I am very particular these days.
The other morning I played golf for the second time. I was helped this time & got on famously. It is amazing what a difference it makes if someone tells you what to do.
Some of the photographs I have taken really are wizard. A number of them are exposures taken at night. They are incredibly good. I shall send you some as soon as possible.
I get on very well with some of Desmonds friends who are
[page break]
down here this week. They take me swimming & all over the place. Some of the parties we have had have been really grand fun.
My girl friends’ name is baby & we do awfully well together at dancing. You ought to see us.
At the moment we are awaiting posting. If you don’t hear from me for some time you will know I am on the move again. It’s funny I hate moving once I get settled in a place but one gets used to anything these days.
The weather has been ideal. Perfect for Tennis, golf & swimming. These latter keep me fit dispite the late nights.
No more to-day, Dad darling. I will write again in a couple of days & try & send some snaps.
God bless you. Lots of love
from your ever loving son
Dave.

My darling Dad,
Just a line to let you know how I am getting on. Came back to the camp after our leave & got cracking on work right away. We are doing further training for a couple of months – It is called operational training. – It is really most interesting. I am enjoying it thoroughly. We got lots of shooting practice & playing around in turrets. Great fun. We start flying in a couple of days. The planes we are on are bombers. Beautiful planes. Gave me quite a thrill looking over it. They are colossal things. Our work so far has been on the ground. Firing practice, & lectures on various subjects all most interesting.
The town near this place isn’t up to much. Especially after S. Africa it is awfully boring. Still I feel like doing a spot of work. When we got back from leave we went out the next day to a flick it was lousy. After the show it rained like fury. It took us three hours to get back to our billet. After two & a half hours searching & standing around we managed to locate a taxi. That was quite enough for us. Tonight is the third night in succession that we have stayed in Quite enjoyed it in fact. Alongside our billet we have a canteen where we can get tea, rolls & beer. So we are quite well off. We miss the hectic life
[page break]
we had in S.Africa. Sorry I spent all that money Dad, but going back to 2/6 a day was pretty awful Also one is only young once & in these days that applies more so than ever.
I hope to manage a week-end up to London sometime if we are not flying. Our flying clothing is absolutely terrific. Will try & send you some snap [sic] soon. Also some of the latest ones I took in S.Africa. Photography was the chief cause of my extravagance. Everybody is very impressed with my photograph album. It certainly looks damn good.
No more to-day Dad will write again soon.
God bless you. Lots of love
Your loving son
Dave.

923995 Sgt. D.A. Boldy,
10th Dec. 1941
My darling Dad,
Thanks awfully for your letter. Sorry to hear about Dan Joseph. Hope he recovers soon.
Have had a fairly hectic time here for the first time since we have returned from S.Africa. Though it is difficult to get out of this camp we do manage to somehow. Nottingham about 16 miles from the camp is a jolly fine place & full of fun. Ajan & I are friendly with two young married girls who we go dancing with. The mother in law of one of them usually puts us up for the night. She is very nice. My partner is a rather neat little blonde, though a bit spoilt & rather shallow. Quite good fun to go dancing with.
[page break]
I am going up to London in a couple of days for 48hrs. It is better than nothing. I am due some leave in a month.
We had rather a hectic trip a couple of nights ago. A fighter intercepted us & at that moment my turret – [sic] stopped functioning but we came home safely. Haven’t operated much lately. Still the hours are piling up slowly.
No more to-day Dad.
God bless you.
Lots of love
Dave.
