He was captured near Tobruk in 1942 and was Senior British Officer at Stalag Luft 3 at the time of the Wooden Horse escape.

Joyce Exton Wallace recalls being put on a charge for insolence to a non commissioned officer. Joyce and her colleagues had missed the last train back to camp at Stanmore after attending a dance. She was reprimanded for reacting inappropriately to the sergeant when told she was wearing her respirator incorrectly.

An account of the resource
Two member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force attending to the ropes and cables of an inflated barrage balloon. The ropes are held in place by anchors. The anchors nearest the balloon itself are sack covered whilst those further away are bare blocks. Pairs of weighted bags are alongside with a wire and post fence with woodland beyond.
