Interview with Enrica Mariani
Enrica Mariani recollects her wartime experiences in Milan: her brother dying of bronchitis after spending too much time in the shelter and her father working in an armaments factory. The aggressive fascist militiamen and the long hours she spent in the shelter listening to a man playing the guitar and singing songs mocking the regime. She recalls her partisan husband, who was repeatedly jailed for spreading subversive propaganda material. She describes the 1943 bombings when she narrowly escaped an incendiary. She remembers working at a very young age as a seamstress, following her father’s death and her mother leaving her job as a doorman. She stresses the social divide among evacuees: the better off were afraid to lose their wealth while working class people had a fatalistic, resigned attitude toward war. She discusses helping people fleeing to Switzerland by breaching the border fence, as to avoid detention as military internees in Germany and describes draft-dodgers living in hideouts. She recalls how she was able to sense incoming aircraft well before the alarm sounded.

Interview with James Thomas Bateman
Aged 17, James volunteered for aircrew in June 1942 purely for the adventure as he was looking for something exiting. He trained in Canada as a navigator and after a wonderful leave in New York returned to England for advanced flying training. on completion he was posted to 149 Squadron flying Stirlings at RAF Lakenheath.
On one of his operations he arrived over France to drop supplies to the French resistance but, in the absence of a reception committee, returned home and successfully repeated the trip the next night.
After converting to Lancasters, his first trip was to Duisburg but he forgot to operate the bombing master switch which meant they had to go around again and work their way back into the main bomber stream. James considers himself very fortunate to have survived that episode.
He speaks warmly of his crew but admitted that on the morality of mass bombing he had a dispute with his engineer and actually came to blows.
In December 1944, he completed his 30th operation to the Oberhausen oil refinery but became ill with tonsillitis and hospitalised. On recovery he spent time at RAF Feltnell training new crews on the Gee-H navigation system.
James was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and after demob spent time as a clerk before joining Quantas Airways as an air navigation officer. Unfortunately the training was too complex for him and he left to pursue a career as a salesman for 25 years.
James speaks at length of his strong feelings on the importance of the role that Bomber Command carried out, which was not recognised by the leaders, and considers that the enemy were not the German people but the Nazis.

Fred Gardiner grew up in Oxfordshire and worked in a furniture factory before volunteering for the Royal Air Force. He flew five operations as a wireless operator / air gunner from RAF Syerston before his aircraft was shot down. He gives a detailed account of having to bale out of his Lancaster at night, of meeting civilians who sheltered him in various locations whilst he and others avoided German soldiers prior to their rescue. After the war, he and his wife returned to thank those who had helped him escape and remained in touch with many of those who he came across.

Letter from Jean Roulon to Herbert O’Hara
Expresses happiness that Herbert had made it back to England, and informing him that the man he had been sharing a room with was an agent of the Gestapo who had managed to compromise their resistance network, leading to Jean and his wife having to leave their home and several of their friends being arrested. Jean also discusses how the village he was staying in was burnt down by the retreating German forces, with more than 60 people killed (including much of his wife’s family). He also expresses the hope that the war will soon be over and that they will meet again afterwards.

Interview with Tito Samorè
Tito Samorè recollects wartime memories in Milan, when he was a member of the Balilla youth organisation. Remembers the outbreak of war and its announcement on the radio. Describes the first bombing of Milan in 1940, stressing how the wooden pannelled attics made it easy for the incendiaries to burn the building. Recollects his fathers attempts to avoid skilled workers being deported to Germany and reminisces on various episodes: food shortages, ration cards, shoot-outs in the streets, strafing of tramways. Describes different kinds of shelters and remembers his evacuee life at Santa Margherita Ligure where he witnessed the sinking of a destroyer. Recollects how he was left maimed for rest of the life after a failed attempt to disassemble a gun shell on 27 February 1944.

Lebensgefahr
Danger de Mort
The first part is targeted at the German population and argues, with illustrations, for passive and active resistance against the regime. It uses the image of Germany’s many broken bridges to argue that the only bridge open to the German people is that leading to peace and reconstruction.
The second, much longer, part warns foreign workers in Germany (particularly French and Belgian) that they are in grave danger as the final conflagration of the war is inevitable. Urges them to take action to lessen the danger and hasten the end of their captivity, and gives guidance and instruction as to how they should proceed.
It says that workers are in danger from Germans and from air attack from Allied Forces, the like of which they have never seen before. They will be forced to live and work in areas where Allied attacks will be at their fiercest (such as Darmstadt and Frankfurt), sent to the front, or forced to work on the fortifications. Hostages are likely to be shot or beaten and tortured in special concentration camps.
Claims that workers are in a powerful position, and should consider the successes of the Resistance organized against the regime of Mussolini before the Allies invaded in 1943. A workers’ general strike in Copenhagen in July 1944 had similar success and the workers triumphed in their demands. The 12 million foreign workers in Germany could paralyse the production of goods as well as all transport links and all this could be done in a few days.
Workers should get out the industrial centres - which are likely to be bombed by the Allies - and go to the countryside. They can hide there taking advantage of widespread labour shortage. Workers should have alibis ready, pretend to have lost their way, avoiding to rouse suspects, and steering clear from big farms as these may have spies.
Stresses the importance of sabotage and passive forms of resistance which will reduce the quality and quantity of production, either by deliberately misunderstanding instructions or damaging an almost finished article. The combined effect of these actions may be massive.
Workers should band together to ensure that their rights in the camps, workshops, or wherever their work is, are meticulously protected. Rights include food in the canteens, rations, mealtimes, facilities in the camps and cantonments, working hours, sanitary conditions, hygiene, accident prevention, permissions, Sunday leave arrangements, protection from aerial attack, and the right to get to a shelter.
Stresses the importance of acting together forming or joining cells of passive resistance or protection rights; also claims that some anti-Nazi Germans can be valuable allies provided their intentions are sincere. Concludes urging foreign workers who cannot go to the countryside to organize resistance cells, slow production, resist exploitation by passive resistance, collaborate with anti-Nazi Germans, set up a list of Nazis and their minions and spread the truth about German defeats in battle on the different fronts. They should also listen to the news broadcasts from Allied sources and obey instructions from the Allied High Command.

Interview with an eye-witness of Milan bombings
The informant describes two bombings he eye-witnessed in the Sesto San Giovanni and Niguarda area. During the first, he was in a basement adapted as underground shelter: he recollects women reciting the rosary and a queasy sensation in the stomach caused by explosions. During the latter he found himself in an open space in which trenches have been dug and saw the bombs falling. Describes how he gradually became used to violence and destruction; the sense of danger being tempered by his natural inquisitiveness. Stressed the inefficiency of anti-aircraft fire and the gradual escalation of the bombing war. Mentions the widespread sense of solidarity and mutual support: factory workers pilfering coal at great personal risk, and the role of the “Soccorso Rosso” clandestine mutual support network. Recalls an atmosphere of fear and episodes of violence, mentioning loathed Fascist militiamen and episodes of the resistance in Milan. Elaborates on how the bombings were the just retribution for starting the war.

Interview with Piero Fiorot
Piero Fiorot reminisces about his pre-war life in Sacile: schooling, fascist paramilitary training and indoctrination, curfews, rationing, and doing business in a tightly controlled, closed economic system. Contrasts the relatively tranquil life during the first stage of the war with the chaos following the fall of the Fascist regime and the brutality of the subsequent German occupation. Recounts wartime anecdotes such as dropping of propaganda flyers, clandestine listening of British broadcasts, evacuee’s life, German mop ups and killings, anti-aircraft fire, and damage caused by jettisoned bombs. Describes the tense atmosphere inside a shelter with people weeping and praying, and contrasts it with his care-free attitude. Stresses the strategic importance of the city, owing to its railway station and the nearby railway bridges. Describes the 1944 Sacile bombings and provides details on the 5 November 1944 attack in which a bomb nearly hit the private shelter of the Balliana family and many children lost their lives. Reminisces about the funeral and the sight of his schoolmates in white coffins. Speaks critically of the Resistance accused to provoke avoidable reprisal and mentions some victims of German brutality such as Raimondo Lacchin and Marco Meneghini. Describes Pippo dropping supplies and small antipersonnel mines, stressing how children were easily maimed until they were told not to pick them up. Mentions his friendly relationship with Heinrich and Peter Paul, two Luftwaffe pilots based at the nearby Aviano airfield who supported him in many circumstances; describes a fortuitous reunion with the latter. Provides details on the early post-war years and elaborates on the legitimacy of bombing. Recounts how British forces were generally hated and stresses the difficulty to reconcile the bombings with the idea of being liberated.

Interview with Sandro Boiocchi
Sandro Boiocchi remembers wartime memories at Travacò, in the Pavia area. Mentions various episodes: food shortages, the black market, fascist and German roundups, Pippo flying at night, bombing of bridges, giving shelter to evacuees. Tells how stables provided warm shelter but were also used as hidden storage for weapons. Mentions seeing an aircraft taken down in the woods, with a dead pilot still inside the cockpit. Remembers the blowing up of an ammunition dump and the following blast wave, which shattered their windows and doors. Describes the strict instructions issued by parents and relatives to black out the windows extremely well in order not to serve as a target for bombings at night. Tells of when his mother stood up against a group of Germans and fascists intending to search their house for food and how she told them off. Recounts episodes of selfless generosity and moral integrity . Explains how, following a direct order from the partisan leaders, actions against the German troops were forbidden in the Travacò area, of strategic importance for the resistance and where huge amounts of weapons were stacked. Tells of Carabinieri opposing the Fascist regime, having pledged allegiance to the king. Tells how, in absence of authority, the population resorted to informal mutual assistance networks.

Interview with Lidia Vendramin
Lidia Vendramin reminisces her childhood in Sacile including details on her primary schooling, family, and town life. Contrasts the public manifestations of joy the day the war was declared, with the shock and dismay of her parents, whose lives had been profoundly affected by the First World War. Describes the first bombings aimed at the railway lines and the subsequent, more severe attacks which targeted the whole town. Reminisces about her life as an evacuee at Nave and provides an account of night bombings on Aviano and Treviso, describing target indicators, flares, and the muffled noise of distant explosions. Stresses her sense of hopelessness, and the difficulty to make sense of meaningless violence and wanton destruction. Claims that parents tried everything to keep their children out of the horrors of war, and stressed how she had to piece together different bits of information to understand the events she had eye-witnessed. Mentions widespread solidarity among co-workers, who rushed to patch up a plant. Describes convoys packed with Jews and Italian prisoners of war en route to Germany and mentions various acts of kindness: women trying to pass food to the prisoners or collecting the notes they dropped on the railway tracks hoping to send news home; railwaymen sabotaging trains. Mentions some anecdotes connected about Pippo and the Resistance. Stressed how the droning sound of aircraft haunted her for years after the end of the war. Having been at the receiving end of the bombing war, it justifies her keen interest in the history of the second world war and human destructivity. Expresses sympathy for the victim of present day conflicts and elaborates on the present state of global politics and society.

Interview with Carluccio Intropido
Carluccio Intropido recalls his early life as an orphan studying in Pavia at the Artigianelli, a boarding school providing technical training. He recalls that children used to watch aircraft en route to Milan, until Pavia was bombed owing to the strategical value of their bridges. Recalls being caught under a bombing attack during a field trip, narrowly escaping death. Describes an aircraft on Pavia being hit and aircrew bailing out. One injured and captured, while others were spirited away to Switzerland by local people. Describes school children taken to the crash site and recalls an engine stuck atop a mulberry tree and debris scattered all around. Remembers people salvaging items, among them a first aid kit and a leather aircrew cap, the latter being used when the informant was later enlisted as an army despatch rider. Praises aircrew as heroes for refraining to drop bombs on Pavia when the aircraft was hit. Recalls the liberation of the city mentioning Mario Cecchetti - an insurgent manning a clandestine radio station - and two military chaplains hidden inside the school. Stresses how it was liberated in a non-violent way, mainly through ruse and suasion, and downplays the role of partisans. Describes how people taking shelter in a ditch (Tomba dell’acqua negra) were crushed by nearby explosions. Emphasises a light-hearted approach to war, describing hunger was feared more than the bombing. Recounts anecdotes of the ‘Mongols’ billeted at the school, troops captured by the Germans and deployed for anti-partisan operations. Recalls Pippo and describes its regular passages as being so accurate that people could check the clock against it. Emphasises its role as a black-out checker, in the context of curfew regulations but he was not sure if it was an Allied or Axis aircraft. Describes a post-war encounter with a person who claimed to know an alternative version of Mussolini’s death; he was killed during an escape attempt followed by a staged execution the day after.
