In a farmhouse, three civilians are being interrogated by soldiers in fascist and nazi uniforms. The prisoner in the foreground is being tortured by strappado i.e. suspending the entire weight of the person on their wrists, which are tied together behind the back. The civilian in the mid-ground is being punched in the face, while the one in the background is being beaten with sticks. A soldier in the bottom right corner is checking a document. A wheel-barrow, two spades and a pitchfork are visible.

Caption translates as: “3 February 1945. Pampaluna di Porpetto (Udine province). Nazi-Fascist mop-up: they are looking for Romano 'the left handed' inside Battistella farmhouse. They did not find him. They beat Sante for one hour and then hung him in the barn, one metre above the ground. His nephew, Onorio Barbuio, was hanged by the neck until exhaustion. Behind the hay barn door, Sebastiano Garbuio was severely beaten."

Caption translates as: “On 7 January 1945, the ‘Ciapalev’ brigade freed 70 inmates detained at Via Spalato prison. On 11 February, Friedrich Rainer, commissioner of the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Littoral, ordered the reprisal. At the crack of dawn, a lorry unloaded 23 hostages near the cemetery. They were: Pontello Vincenzo, Bernadon Osvaldo, Purmesan Bruno, Maraldo Fortunato, Bernardo Remo, Serena Renzo, Lovisa Francesco, Juri Lino, Zambon Giovanni, Tommaso Adelchi, Manca Gesuino, Dorigo Pietro, Pradolin Luciano, Stabile Renato, Helde Luigi, Chinese Antonio, Bernardel Carlo, Zambon Gino, Lovisa Fernando, Marcello Giovanni, Giordano Attilio. The tragic news went from the plain to the mountains, filled the combatants with indignation and anger. On the outer wall of the cemetery, a perpetual light burns above a plaque that reads: “On 11 February 1945, against this wall, the bloodthirsty savagery of the Nazi-Fascists, disdainful of the universal laws of justice, killed hostages from the jail at sunrise in a barbarian reprisal.”

Caption translates as: “1 – The Porzus Massacre – 7 February 1945, 1.30 pm, Friuli – A hundred partisans belonging to the “Garibaldi Natisone” unit pass north to Porzus. Armed, they looked like straggler and drifters heading to Austria. However, that was not the way to Austria… Picking up interrupted lives amidst the ruins of the mountain dairies in Porzus, we worked backwards, an elaborate labyrinth made of passions, resentment, and chauvinism. About this, the Resistance wrote the most bitter pages in history. They were headed to the mountain dairies in Porzus, where the Osoppo headquarter was. A rift made of hate and resentment was created between the ‘reds’ and ‘greens’ partisan factions. The Osoppo men refused to cooperate with the Garibaldi men as they did not want to ruin their friendship with the Yugoslavs of the the Partisan 9th Corps.”

Irons are being heated in a brazier at the bottom left. A pair of boots and a bowl are scattered on the floor.
“FEBBRAIO 1945. I MARTIRI DI PALMANOVA, una delle macabre scene alle prigioni di Palmanova, un patriota maranese catturato dai nazi-fascisti. E’ uno dei pochi superstiti, che durante il periodo, dal 20 Febbraio al 13 Marzo, ha sopportato stoicamente le torture operate susl suo corpo dai carnefici, R. T. DF. Detto l’uomo cane per le bestiali morscicature sulle membra dei patrioti.”
Caption translates as: “February 1945, the Palmanova Martyrs. One of the macabre happenings in the Palmanova prison: a patriot from Marano was arrested by the Nazi-Fascists. He was one of the few survivors who, between 20 February and 13 March, stoically endured the tortures inflicted on his body by his tormentors, R. T. and D.P., also called the “dog-man” because of the brutal bites he left on the bodies of patriots”.

In a prison cell, a naked partisan is chained to a wall by his wrists. Two men in uniform are beating him, the one on the right with a chair, the one on the left with a blood-stained club. A third man is throwing the contents of a bucket at the prisoner, while an officer is holding a gun.
Label reads “238”; signed by the author; caption reads “PALMANOVA, MARCELLO VOLPONI, anni 21 da S. GIORGIO di NOGARO UD. “Tito” catturato a Gonars dal Rebez, il giorno 26 Febbraio 1945. Torturato dal Capitano Venier, gli fu’ riservato un trattamento speciale, nudo lo picchiarono con sedie, con la frusta tutti a dosso, sanguinante, svenne, preso per il capelli e trascinato alla cella No 1 dove fu’ impiccato al gancio. E ancora legnate. Tormenti atroci, da legacci che non lasciavno circolare il sangue, secchi d’acqua fredda e botte: supplica il Rebez: [sic] “per favore sparatemi”, e il Rebez “ti faremo morire lentamente”. Febbre alta, gli diedero da bere, acqua salata mista a orina, e olio, penzolava inerte come uno straccio, poi calci e pugni di nuovo. Il calcio del fucile gli fracasso’ la testa, e spaccarono una costola, ancora 18 indicibili ore, attaccato a quel gancio, poi lo portarono alla cella No 2 fino al 13 febbraio, assieme ad altri, fui [sic] messo alla cella No 8 il 6 marzo lo portarono a Udine, in via Spalato dove assistette al processo dei 30 patrioti, piu’ tardi giustiziati, il 22 marzo partii [sic] per la Germania."
Caption translates as “PALMANOVA, MARCELLO VOLPONI, 21 years old, from S. GIORGIO di NOGARO UD. Nicknamed “Tito”, captured in Gornars by Rebez on 26 Frebruary 1945. Tortured by Captain Venier in an especially cruel way. Naked, he was bludgeoned with chairs and whipped by everyone. Bleeding, he passed out, and was dragged to his cell by his hair where he was hanged to a hook. Then more beating. Excruciating pain because of tight ropes that stopped blood, buckets of cold water, even more beating. He pleads Rebez: “Shot me, please”. Rebez replied “We’ll slowly kill you”. High fever, they gave her to drink brine mixed with urine and oil, dangling idle like a cloth, then punches and kicks again. The butt of a rifle fractured his skull, they also fractured a rib. 18 hours of further tortures dangling from that hook, the he was sent to cell 2 until the 13 of February, then to cell 8 with others. On the 6 March they carried him to Udine, via Spalato, where he saw the trial of the 30 patriots who where later executed. On 22 March he set off to Germany.

UDINE 1945 condannati a morte per reati politici, attendono la loro fine nelle carceri di via Spalato, fra’ di essi vi’ e’ anche “diavolo” un partigiano catturato in quei giorni. Ma i “diavoli rossi” una quadra di GAP comandata da un uomo che rasentava il limite, tra’ la realta’, e la leggenda, Romano era il suo nome di battaglia, i nazisti avevano messo una forte taglia sulla sua testa. Caption translates as: “29 February 1945, Udine. (1) Fifteen people, who were sentenced to death for political offences, await their fate in the Via Spalato prison. Amongst them the “devil”, a partisan who was arrested at that time. The “red devils”, members of the Patriotic Action Groups, were led by Romano (this was his nom de guerre), a man who skirted the line between reality and myth. German soldiers have entered the town square during the day and are herding civilians together by pointing guns and shouting orders. Five figures (who have their hands tied behind their backs) have been separated out and taken towards the front of a building.

Un giovanissimo soldato Tedesco di guardia davanti la mia casa, in precedenza aveva chiesto a mia madre: “mamma pane, io tanta fame!” e mia madre gliè nè dà. Lui si era accorto che le persone uscite di lì, non erano più rientrate ed accorato e grato di quello che aveva ricevuto da mia madre, gli dice: mamma non farlo piu, ti bruciano la casa! Dall’alba al muro, da ore, 5 uomini, attendono, in un stillicidio tremendo il momento dell‘esecuzione, G. I. sorpreso all‘alba perche cantava per le vie del paese, al muro, in tasca teneva palottole [sic] di pistola. Se le passa in bocca, divelle col piede un ciottolo della cunetta, ed una alla volta, le sputa a piombo nella buca. E. N. è catturato con una mattassa di filo di rame, sabotatore è messo al muro il filo era mio e veniva a riportarmelo, gliè lo avevo imprestato per la pesca. Quella tremenda giornata iniziata male, finì bene, nessuno venne fucilato, alcuni sospettati furono portati via, ma poi tornarono a casa.”
Caption translates as: “17 March 1945 – German sweeping in San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine province). The village is surrounded, and all men are gathered in the 20th September Square. I live in that house on the corner, number 377. I didn’t miss anything, from beginning to end. However, it is possible to evade from where I live. They are looking for partisan leaders who, faking a sudden illness, are aided by my mother, an obstetrician. She helped them escape. A young German soldier was on watch in front of my house. He had already asked my mother before: “Mom. Bread. I’m really hungry!”, and my mother gave him some. He noticed the people going out of the house who never came back and, heartfelt and thankful for what my mother gave him, told her: “Mom, don’t do that again or they’ll set your house on fire!”. From dawn, for hours, five men are awaiting their execution at the wall. It felt like an eternal and distressing trickle of dread. G.I. was caught at dawn singing in the streets of the village. While at the wall, he had some gun bullets in his pockets. He put the bullets on the inside of his mouth; he removed a cobblestone from the ditch with his foot; and, one at a time, he perpendicularly spat them in the hole. E.N. was caught holding a copper wire bundle. He was considered a saboteur, so he was put at the wall. The wire was mine and he was taking it back to me. He borrowed it because he wanted to go fishing. That horrible day started off on a low note, but it ended on a high one: nobody was shot and those suspects who were taken away, came back home.”

In a mountainous area, partisans are firing at unarmed civilians, causing confusion for both the civilians and their animals. One woman and three men have been hit by the gunfire.

A surprise attack by fascists is taking place in a room where three civilians are cooking food over an open fire. The civilians have been taken by surprise, knocking over a chair as one of them stands and a plate being dropped. The soldiers are pointing their guns at the civilians and the officer is gesturing with his left hand.

Execution of seven partisans
World War (1939-1945)
Seven, bloodied men have been lined up against a wall to be executed. The men are chained together with their hands behind their backs. The soldiers are dressed in green and black and are preparing to fire their guns. An officer is hitting one of the men in the face and he is falling backwards. At the top of the wall, a small white cross can be seen and in the top left hand corner, a black and white photo has been inserted showing two men in civilian clothes.
Inscriptions read “265” signed by the author; caption reads ”9 APRILE 1945. RONCHI DI TERZO D’AQUILEIA UD, 8 patrioti, B.C. - I.F. - C.R. - B.O. - B.G. - A.G. - T.A. - M.E. Dopo subito il martirio alla famigerata caserma “Piave”, di Palmanova scortati da 10 fascisti, al comando di Rebez, vengono portati alla cinta del cimitero di Terzo d’Aquileia, e fucilati. Io vidi i loro volti, i loro occhi nella tensione della morte, erano aperti, additavano ai giovani delle nuove generazioni un domani migliore. (2o) Il loro sacrificio è stato vano? Sgorga ancora sangue oggi dall‘Italia.”
Caption translates as: “9 April 1945 – Ronchi di Terzo d’Aquileia (Udine province). Eight patriots (B.C., I.F., C.R., B.C., B.G., A.G., T.A., and M.E.) who were tortured at the infamous ‘Piave’ barracks in Palmanova, were escorted by ten Fascists, led by Rebez. They were chained together, standing by the cemetery walls in Terzo d’Aquileia, where they were shot. I saw their faces; their eyes, startled by death, were open, pointing to a better future for the upcoming young generations. (2) Was their death fruitless? Blood is still gushing from Italy‘s wounds.”

The "red devils" partisan brigade in the Codroipo-Aris marshes
World War (1939-1945)
A semi-clothed man, whose left arm has been amputated at the elbow, has a rifle slung over his right shoulder and is directing men and one woman who are walking in knee to waist high water. Most of the men are armed and some are carrying boxes. The men are all clothed or partially-clothed in uniforms of green trousers or shorts, white shirts and red caps.

Caption translates as: “13 April 1945. The “red devils” brigade, after escaping a Cossacks sweeping, ran for their lives in the swampy marshes in Codroipo-Aris. They are carrying loads of munitions, more than on metric ton. They are led by “Romano”, a man of extraordinary bravery, who almost became a myth, whose figure was only marginally tarnished by some unprincipled subalterns who had nothing to do with the partisan struggle and took advantage of honest people".

Men in khaki uniforms attack a stable where three German soldiers are hiding. A German soldier has been hit and is falling onto the ground, while two of the soldiers in khaki have also been hit and are falling down. One German soldiers is firing a sub-machine gun directly at his enemies, as is the partisan on the other side.

Maggio 1945, Citossi Gelindo “Romano” il mancino, in quel periodo turbinoso di paura e di violenza, con i nazi-fascisti imperversanti dappertutto e i partigiani braccati, casa per casa, un pugno di uomini guidati da Romano sfido’ il nemico, con avventurosa audacia. Restituendoli colpo su colpo , sfuggendo alle imboscate, spostandosi continuamente e seminando il terrore con il nome di “diavoli rossi”, condussero una guerriglia accanita, servendosi spesso di carri agricoli, mascherati e carichi di armi. Attaccando anche in pieno giorno; e’ sara’ il battaglione “diavoli rossi” a liberare Palmanova il 28 aprile 1945. Entrando in S. Giorgio di Nogaro il parroco Enrico da Ronca, gli si fece incontro, e lo supplica “basta sangue”! Romano ubbidisce. La Patria per un lungo periodo, non della resistenza, lo ricompensa con l’esilio in Jugoslavia, dove moriva. L’ultima visita in S. Giorgio, la fece a me’, sapeva che avevo disegnato le sue gesta, era amareggiato mi disse: Romano, non vogliamo fumo! [sic] E’ gli reindicarono la via dell’esilio.”
Label translates as: “S. Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine province), May 1945 – Citossi Gelindo “Romano”, the left-handed. At the time, the atmosphere was whirling with fear and violence. The Nazi-Fascists were raging everywhere, and the partisans were hunted door to door. A bunch of men, led by Romano, daringly challenged the enemies. They matched them blow for blow; they escaped the ambushes by continuously moving; and they spread fear under the name of “red devils”. They carried out a determined guerrilla warfare, often using farming carts, which were disguised and loaded with weapons. They even attacked in broad delight. The “red devils” battalion was the one who freed Palmanova on 28 April 1945. While entering San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine province), the vicar – Enrico da Ronco – went towards Romano and begged him to stop the brutalities. Romano obeyed him. As a result of this, his homeland rewarded him by banishing him to Yugoslavia, where he died. The last time he was in San Giorgio, he came visiting me. He knew that I painted his deeds. He was embittered by his banishment, having been told: “Romano, we don’t want smoke!" [i.e. "Romano, we need to keep things quiet"], and sent him into exile.”

Nino Zanninello has been stopped by two of the soldiers manning a mountain check-point. One of the soldiers is holding onto the right handlebar of a bicycle, whilst another soldier is asking him questions and taking down notes.
Caption reads “108”; signed by the author; caption reads “Novembre 1944. (2). …..Avuto notizia che al posto di blocco i nazifascisti requisiscondo le biciclette prive di permesso: Nino vi si reca per escogitare il suo piano. Giuntovi gli vengono richiesti i documenti, lui dice di averli dimenticati a casa e asserisce di andare a prenderli, e con rapida mossa preme il detonatore sotto la sella, e con fare rammaricato si avvia a piedi verso la valle, mentre la bicicletta viene prelevata e appogiata alla baracca da un Tedesco…..”

Partisans attack a mountain check point

A group of partisans under cover behind rocks in the mountains are firing on a check-point. The figures below have been taken by surprise and are running around holding guns in the air. Lucia Muratori recalls her early life in Bologna in the family of a well-off foundry owner. Stresses that she had less traumatic war experiences compared to many other people at that time, the only disturbing episode being eye-witnessing the killing of a fascist. Narrates how her father moved all the family to different accommodations in the countryside, such as Vignola and Marano sul Panaro. Recalls how partisans were hidden in the hills and fascists tried to capture them. Stresses that her father hated fascists and explains how they ruined the life of her best friend. Recollects the daily rushes to shelters, tempered by lack of danger awareness owing to her young age. Remarks how difficult it was for her attending primary school and the efforts undertaken to graduate after the end of the war. Describes the gruesome sight of children with face injuries living in an institution nearby her school. Recalls the liberation of Bologna, the Germans on the run and the arrival of the Allies. Mentions post-war vendettas and the acts of revenge on women who had allegedly had affairs with Germans, who had their heads shaved. Remembers how life slowly went back to normal, even though Bologna was partially destroyed and many people were forced to sell off their belongings to survive. Emphasises her bafflement when she realised the Allies were at the same time the liberators and those who dropped bombs on innocents.

Fausta Maggioni recalls memories of her wartime life in Milan. She describes a sizeable shelter reinforced with wooden props, a little bag with the few valuables she had always to bring along, as well as the many duties of her father as warden, who checked the attic for incendiaries and bombs with a gas mask and small fire extinguisher. Emphasises how air raid precautions were informally learned and how sometimes children remain at home watching the bombing, guessing the points of impact. Describes emotions swinging from excitement to fear, people reciting the rosary or other prayers and stresses the fear of losing her treasured toys. Recollects a bombing at school, the dash to the shelter among incendiaries, target indicators, and how she stumbled upon three armed boys and the subsequent runoff to home. Recollects the gruesome sight of corpses at the entrance of the Mosucco cemetery and a fire exchange between fascists and partisans in which two men were killed. She describes the war as a fratricidal struggle between young men who had no other choice than being called up or join the partisans. Recalls an example of a young man’s bravado who remained in the middle of the street yelling 'Fire! I’m here'. Remembers German troops retreating, as well as the elation of her father, a man of the socialist persuasion, on hearing of Mussolini’s hanging. Gives an account of her post-war life: his father toiling as a construction worker, her job as a seamstress, the first radio set she had, her first home with a bathroom, and a doll handcrafted by her mother.
