Description
An account of the resource
John volunteered to join the RAF in 1940 wanting to become aircrew as a wireless operator as he had an interest in early radios. While awaiting his aircrew application to be processed he did his initial training at Blackpool and then onto RAF Yatesbury to train as a ground wireless operator. He was initially posted to Group headquarters at Huntingdon as a ground wireless operator. John then went back to Yatesbury for a wireless mechanics course and then moved to RAF Horsham St Faiths to 139 Squadron with Blenheims, while he was there he was locally trained and flew as an air gunner.
He then went back to Yatesbury for an aircrew wireless operators course then on to Penrhos for an Air Observers and gunners course. From there John went to 10 OTU at Abingdon, while there he flew on one of the 1,000 bomber operations in a Whitley flying from Stanton Harcourt.
Having finished his course John was posted to 10 Squadron at RAF Leeming, still on the Whitley, the squadron converted to the Halifax, John flew in the Halifax II fitted with Merlin engines. The squadron then moved to RAF Melbourne, in Sept/Oct 1942 John’s crew were posted to Leeming to a new squadron No 408 (RCAF) as part of 6 Group.
On an operation to Hamburg 2/3 February 1943 John’s aircraft was badly damaged and the crew baled out, he recounts the difficulties of bailing out from an out of control aircraft. He landed in a tree and evaded capture for three days.
As a prisoner of war, he exchanged identities with a soldier. He was also on one of the long marches from January to April.

Dear Daddy,
Thanks very much indeed for the letter & cheque – it is very good of you, & I expect I shall turn it to good advantage.
I was glad to hear from you as none of us knew where you were – but I guessed you knew how to look after yourself by this time. I asked several fellows from France if they’d seen anything of 71 Wing, but although they’d heard about you – they didn’t know where anything but themselves was.
Your last letter of the 14th reached me on the 29th – but this one of the [deleted] 3 [/deleted] 1st June arrived yesterday, which [deleted] a [/deleted] is almost normal

routine.
If I remember rightly, to-day commemorates the anniversary of the day I nearly spoilt the paintwork of a Battle – once again it’s damned hot & I’m lying outside sunbathing. (Very pleasant).
Incidentally I have just heard that Quine has been posted elsewhere; I heard it from Higgins the chemist in Calne, who was speaking to Quine the other day. He was at our new next door camp at Compton Bassett as the C.O.
I quite agree with your statements on the Hun – I won’t give the bastards any more quarter than you – I’ve heard quite sufficient tales of them from some of the lads here who’ve just returned.
Now that the war is in full swing, they have decided to make us work some more, thus we now get 1 extra hour per diem. Also the course has been cut down considerably, & instead of getting my badge up at the end of August – I expect it will be at the beginning of July.
[page break]
3.
As well as the extra hour we now have to wield picks & shovels digging trenches. Also when we’ve done that there is a lot of sticking brown paper on windows to be done.
By the way I intend to buy a camera with the money I have amassed; it is an Ensign 55; a miniature camera, which contains all the features of a larger one of similar type & price. The great advantage in its size is that one is never ‘carrying a camera’ – it can be slipped in the pocket without being noticed, (an added advantage because they’re not keen on cameras in the camp.) It has an aperture on it & a several speed shutter. Altogether a very neat little job.
Well I must finish this off now as

time is getting on & I have several more letters to write.
By the way I like the idea of a W.O. being under arrest – I never had a particular liking for the majority of the breed!
Cheerio & best love
[underlined] Ian. [/underlined]
P.S. They’re terribly scared of parachute troops round here – nothing but barriers thrown up across all the roads; and every sign post removed; even the milestones have been defaced – one can’t travel without a map or a knowledge of the country.

Dear Granny,
So sorry not to have written before, but this past week has been our busy week as we were duty wing.
I was sorry to hear you were still in bed, but I expect you will be up soon & out in this lovely weather.
Very many thanks for the stamped cards. I expect & hope to be back next weekend for a long week-end. That means that I shall be back on Friday evening & away on Sunday evening. But of course one can never be sure of anything. I will drop you a card though as soon as possible.
Last Wednesday night I was on

water-guard. Which consists of guarding a water tank & pumping machinery against I.R.A. sabotage – but we now keep our eyes open for parachute troops.
I went to Chippenham last night but only stayed for a Hair Cut & to buy a couple of books.
I don’t know where I shall go to-day yet, but I expect I shall take a ride on my bicycle.
Very best love

Dear Granny,
Thank you for sending the shoes last week, but it was no good after all, I had to go on guard the night of the dance & I eventually had to give the ticket away. Still it couldn’t be helped.
I’m very sorry to hear you’ve been back in bed again, what are you doing to be in bed twice in 1 year?
I shall be back for the week-end either on Friday evening or Saturday sometime. I don’t know if Sheila has rung you up yet, but she wants me to go to a dance at Skindles on Friday night. I might be able to fix it or not, I won’t know yet. Anyhow I shall come along on Saturday till Sunday evening.

Dear Granny,
Thankyou for the letter & cakes, they were very nice, but could you vary them each time so I don’t know what is coming?
Also could you please send along the encyclopaedia of wireless, which you gave me; it will come in very useful now, & help me out on several points.
There isn’t much news here – the weather is very nice, but last week or rather last Friday to Tuesday, I was C.C. (confined to camp) for not handing my pass in after Easter leave. A trivial thing & not much to worry about, except I couldn’t go out last Sunday, when the weather was grand.
I had a card from Sheila to-day [deleted] for [/deleted]
[page break]
written in the train so I could hardly read it. There wasn’t much on it anyhow!
I really can’t think of anything more, except I heard from Daddy that Devoto, the pilot who took me up last June, has just been killed.
Very best love

Dear Granny,
I arrived all right last week, but I left my parcel on M’hd station, while I was putting my bike in the guards van. I wrote for it straight away though, & it was sent to Colne station, where I collected it yesterday. It was unopened peculiarly enough!
I don’t know whether our week-end is next week-end (13th) or not; it seems quite probable, but one never knows in the R.A.F. till the last moment. Anyhow I’ll drop a card as soon as I know.
Last Sunday I was on main guard, 24 hours with 2 hrs: on & 4 off, all day & night. I had to guard Station Head Quarters, but it was very boring. I could only watch the rabbits feeding in the evening
[page break]
and early morning.
Yesterday there was a posh funeral of a sergeant pilot, who smashed himself & plane up the other day. They brought the band out, & a firing party & a lorry to pull the hearse. He had some beautiful flowers though.
The course is much more interesting now we have passed out of the pool, (where I was before). I passed the Morse with 100 percent I think, & the General with 90 percent. We are now starting on electric motors & doing a lot with accumulators. But I expect that is pretty boring for you.
I don’t think there is any more news. The weather has been quite like April; Warm & showery.
Very best love
[underlined] Ian. [/underlined]
P.S. Gordon Barnes has just been posted to Hendon, so I expect he will be home most week-ends.

Dear Granny,
So sorry I haven’t written before, but a chain of circumstances seems to have been against me. Anyhow this is what has happened during the week.
Last Tuesday apparently Pine told me the wrong train, because the one that he said connected at Reading, went to Twyford & Henley only, so I took a risk, by getting off at Twyford & cycling hell for leather to Reading. I got behind a lorry which broke the headwind, but I saw the train pass me at the Woodley bridge. But anyhow I got there in time, but I [deleted] C [/deleted] was perspiring all the way to Chippenham. I then cycled back.
The next day I found I had been put back all the way to the beginning of the
[page break]
course, which also necessitated my moving into an ‘A’ Squadron Hut – Y.42, which is my address now, as you saw at the top I expect.
Last Saturday I intended to potter along out on my bicycle, between Colne & Chippenham; but so great was the wind behind me, that I went on, & before I realized it – I was in Bath! So I went to see the Prior’s at St Christophers’, who welcomed me & gave me tea. I also wandered round the place; which hasn’t changed much, except for a few extra trees planted in the grounds.
Feeling too tired to ride against the wind, and all the way up hill; I caught a train back to Chippenham & cycled on again from there and got back at about five to ten. Altogether a very nice day.
On Sunday I had promised to go out with another fellow in this hut. We started after lunch & got to Devizes where we had tea with friends of his. Then he went & played the organ at the Methodist evening service,
[page break]
[Royal Air Force crest]
which he does apparently every Sunday. I blew the organ for him, which was quite hard work during the Hallelujah Chorus’, which he played for a voluntary at the end.
Afterwards we went back to his friends & had supper. Then started back about 9 & got in about 10.
To-day has been lovely again & really quire warm even up here. I do hope it keeps up till Easter.
Incidentally I’ve heard that we get a week at Easter from [inserted] the [/inserted] Thursday, but it may be changed. Also I’m hoping for a short week-end the week before Easter.
No more to say now, except that you must not do too much at Reading, or I’ll tell Auntie Maggie to keep you in bed!
Very best love
[underlined] Ian. [/underlined]

Usual Address.
13/1/40
Dear Granny,
Thank you for your letter, I hope your not having it as cold as we are – I don’t think it can be, as Colne is a lot warmer than here.
Last Saturday I went to Bath & saw the Waterhouses; John is still at M’boro’ & invited me to go to tea in his study there any afternoon. Mary W. had just got married a week before. I spent the evening from tea to 8 o’clock there. On Friday (yesterday) evening I went down to Colne & looked up an old schoolfriend, who used to be in the same form as me, his name is Higgins. They were very nice to me & took me to see ’Confessions of a Nazi Spy’ and had supper there after. Also they invited me to go up to Blotham with them when they go up (about once a month.) [deleted] T [/deleted]
To-morrow I think I shall go to Swindon & see what is
[page break]
there. I have developed a cold again, and no wonder, seeing the temperature is terribly low here, and the wind cuts in like a knife & freezes you in five mins:
I shall come back next Friday about 7.30 pm. if I can get a ‘bus by then. But expect me between 7.30 & 8 pm. I shall have to leave about 8 pm. on Sunday too.
No more news at all, see you on Friday.
Very best love
