Ludwigshafen
Description
An account of the resource
A vertical target photograph of Ludwigshafen, orientated with the south west at the top. In the lower left corner is a bend in the River Rhine and the entrance to Kaiserworthhafen docks. Just visible at the bottom edge is the end of Luitpoldhafen dock. To the left of the docks is the stadium of the Sudwest Sportspark and then the distinctive railway lines of a large marshalling yard. Above the bend in the river, at the left edge, is an industrial area, which has suffered some bomb damage and there are more industrial areas towards the lower right of the photograph. The upper half of the image shows mainly a mixture of small residential areas separated by open countryside. Bomb craters are visible all over the area, most of them in the lower part. At upper left there are some puffs of cloud or smoke.
The photo is captioned:

LIZ’S SERVICE HISTORY
The large brown document is a photocopy of Liz’s RAF FORM 543-AIRMAN’s RECORD OF SERVICE which was the standard administrative document used for Air Force personnel. The original is still held in RAF archives.
It details the various postings Liz undertook, with dates and operational squadrons/units, and detailed below are notes on each of these where available from RAF and other sources. It also shows promotions up to Leading Aircraft Woman in Oct 1944.
At the time of volunteering and joining up to Belfast Reserve on 8th Jan 1942, next of kin is Liz’s father, address Carnkenny, Ardstraw, Newtonstuart, County Tyrone. Liz is recorded as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, with 33 inch chest (presumably this information needed for uniform measurements!!!), brown hair, blue eyes and fair complexion.
The document also shows the fictitious date of birth Liz gave, 4th August 1923, making her out to be 13 months older than she really was. Throughout her service Liz is recorded as being of “very good” character!
8-1-1942 Joined Belfast Reserve, as ACW 2
28-1-1942 Transferred to Gloucester.
This seems to have been the start point for kitting out trainees prior to moving on to barrage balloon training at Morecombe. See attached article about Joyce Ashdown, who started at Gloucester and trained at Morecombe for 6 weeks from January 1942.
5-3-1942 Joined Morecombe Barrage Balloons, for training
4-6-1942 Moved to 970 Balloon Squadron.
I’ve not been able to trace exact location. See article by Jean Shepherd, “Memories of a Balloon Operator”, who was not based in the same area as Liz but whose experiences may have been similar.
13-4-1943 Moved to 30 Operations Training Unit.
I believe this was based at Hixon, near Lichfield, Staffordshire, and was used for training Wellington bomber crews in night bombing, and for operations. Attached is an extract from the “Operations Record Book” for March 1943, just before Liz’s arrival, and indicates plenty of social activity, and 2800 people based there. There are good pictures on the internet, google RAF Hixon.
[page break]
15-7-1943 Moved to 12 Squadron of T.T. (Technical Training)
This was at Wickenby, near Langworth, Lincolnshire, and was an operational Lancaster base, versions BI and BIII. There is a Memorial Museum at the airfield, and a stone memorial to the 1080 lives lost from personnel based there 1942-1945.
Attached is an article about flight engineer Wally Smith and his Lancaster and related crew members. He flew 30 missions between May-October 1943, and Liz was there July-November 1943. One of the crew referred to, Peter Bemrose, was shot down and became a prisoner of war, and spent some time in one of the same camps (Stalag IVB) as Brian’s father.
In November 1943, just prior to Liz moving, part of 12 Squadron was expanded to become 626 Squadron.
18-11-1943 Moved to 1657 Conversion Unit
This was at Stradishall, Suffolk, with Lancasters Mark I and Mark III and Stirlings. Conversion units were used to train/convert existing medium bomber crews to operate heavy bombers, prior to their posting to Operational Training Units to gain experience before postings to operational Squadrons.
17-4-1944 Moved to 1654 Conversion Unit
This was at Wigsley, Nottinghamshire. See the book “First Wave”, a biography of Reg Payne, pages 97/98/99 when he was at Wigsley in Sept 1943 (before Liz’s time) and summarising his first experience of Lancasters.
13-9-1945 Moved to 14 Base
25-10-1945 Moved to Wickenby
2-1-1946 Moved to AAEE Boscombe Down
16-4-1946 105 PDC Release
11-6-1946 Left Service

Royal Air Force Station,
Stradishall,
Suffolk.
30th June, 1943.
Dear Mr. Jackson,
Please accept my very sincere sympathy in your great loss. There is little I can say other than the fact that your son will be very much missed. He was a grand, likeable chap and a very efficient A/G and his loss will be felt by the Squadron as a whole. There is still a chance that they may have baled out. if such is the case, the Red Cross will notify you in due course. Naturally, if we hear first, we shall communicate with you.
Enclosed are a few of the small personal effects, together with his brevet, which I feel sure you would like immediately, rather than wait until the rest of the kit will be released to you.
As you will see by the official letter, all the effects are to go to Colnbrook, there to await Air Ministry release.
Do not be afraid of writing if you think I can be of help in any way. Once again my deep sympathy.
Yours very sincerely,
[signature]

Sunday
My dear Maggie
No doubt by now you are calling me all the names under the sun for not writing before, but I suppose by now you know me well enough to realise how very [underlined] good [/underlined] I am at letter writing
Well firstly thanks for the parcel which I got quite safely. and thanks for putting in my photo, good job it didn’t print too well what do you say it was really a terrible effort. Well you say you are busy well so am I. I was up in Yorkshire for 4 days last week took a plane & two passengers up to Doncaster & spent two whole days there and had a
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
very good time, since coming back have been down for early flying, so that means getting up at 6 o/clock
So with that & flying you can guess that bed called very early in the evening today we flew all morning & this afternoon we had a Trial football Match to pick out the better team to play the regular station team on Xmas Day. Well our side won 3 – 2 I scored one goal What do you think about that? So I don’t know if we will be playing Xmas day or not yet I cannot imagine it is Sunday here each day is the same we work all day & every day now we are flying
[page break]
[underlined 3 [/underlined]
but as yet have done no night flying here. How long will you get at Xmas we of course get none officially so it remains with the CO whether we fly or not on Xmas day I hope we don’t there will be some moans & groans if we do, because I guess most of the crowd will have had more than one over the eight. We are so isolated here, miles away from anywhere & cannot do any shopping so don’t be surprised if you don’t get a card at Xmas. I know you will understand.
Well I think that is all for now so will finish off now
[page break]
4
& toddle down to post with it so that it can get off at 6 o clock [sic] tomorrow morning, also I shall have to go & see if I am on early flying in the morning & if so get the Guard room to give me a shake or otherwise I shall be here in bed all day because now after my first game of football for 3 years I feel as if I had been kicked all over & my eyes are refusing to stay open
So cheerio, tell Dad I write him tomorrow, kind regards to Jim & Bertha
So Thanks again
Your loving brother
Ellis

No.186 SQUADRON,
ROYAL AIR FORCE STATION,
STRADISHALL,
Nr. Newmarket.
Suffolk.
186S/S.366/18/P.4.
5th April, 1945.
Dear Mrs. Turner,
It is with the greatest regret that I have to inform you that your son, Flight Sergeant Charles Frederick Turner (1042292) has been placed on the seriously ill list as a result of injuries sustained in a flying accident which occurred early this morning, on returning from an operational flight over Germany. I would, however, like to state right away, that no occasion exists for immediate anxiety and that should such occasion arise immediate notification by telegram will be sent to you.
2. Your son is in the R.A.F. Hospital at Ely and his condition is satisfactory. He sustained a broken thigh and a fractured ankle and foot, together with some minor wounds. Although he will probably be in hospital for rather a long time, it is hoped , as indeed it is at present thought, that there will be no after effects from his injuries.
3. I would like to take this opportunity of expressing my very sincere sympathy and further expressing appreciation of your son’s magnificent work with this Squadron coupled with the hope for a very speedy recovery.
Yours very sincerely,
