OCT 1943
Weather was atrocious on this our first trip, with cumulo-nimbus clouds rising to 25,000 feet. We were continually flying in and out of these clouds at 23000 feet. About halfway to the target from the Dutch coast, the pitot head iced up with a resultant loss of indicated air speed (nothing on the clock.) We continued to the target without I.A.S. and it wasn’t until I was descending over the North Sea on the return journey that the pitot head thawed out and we regained air speed on the indicator. At the debriefing when we arrived back at Syerston, Air Vice Marshal Cochrane C. in C. 5 Group congratulated me on bringing the aircraft back from what could have been a disastrous operation for us.

OVER LEIPZIG
Cloud blankets German flares
Express Air Reporter
LANCASTERS played a game of hide-and-seek with German flare-dropping fighters and searchlights among thick clouds over Germany on Wednesday night – and won.
The clouds were so thick in places on the 600-mile route to Leipzig that the searchlights could not even light them up from below and flares merely glowed feebly.
But while the weather hampered the German defences it also made difficulties for the raiders which flew through snow, terrifice [sic] hail, and electrical storms.
Great blue flames of lightning glowed round the planes blinding the fliers.
Mosquitoes at Berlin
Most of the planes got through to Leipzig, aircraft building city of 700,00 people, without sighting a single German fighter. They unloaded their bombs through gaps in the clouds.
One Lancaster, however, piloted by Flight-Sergeant F. J. Stuart, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, had to fight off seven air attacks on the round trip. The bomb-release gear was damaged, but the crew delivered their cargo by hand.
At least one German fighter was shot down by the Lancasters.
Mosquitoes bombed Berlin the same night, causing more damage than is usual in their raids, according to Berlin reports.
We lost 17 bombers.

[Underlined] MAR 30 OPERATION – NUREMBERG. [/underlined]
LANCASTER ND.535 SELF CREW NUREMBERG.
Attacked three times by fighters at different times. The ill-fated attack took place 20 mins. off of target. Enemy fighter unseen opened fire with cannon & machine gun fire from starboard quarter down. Bursts hit & killed Jock Jamieson in mid upper turret, I think it killed George also. Set port main plane on fire & both engines, controls were shot away & I gave the order to bale out. Wally jumped, heard Joe say “I can’t get out Dick” I was hit in right ankle by shrapnel. Aircraft must have then exploded. [inserted] with full bomb load [/inserted] I cannot remember anything until a few seconds before I hit the ground.
The parachute was open above me with holes burnt through here & there. When I hit the ground my weakened right ankle was fractured & my left ankle badly sprained. I was captured & taken prisoner. 5 of crew were killed (4 by explosion) why I was not killed I do not know. Wally was taken prisoner.
Jock, George, Johnny, Joe & Colin are laid at rest in Koegnigsberg Church graveyard 60 miles NW of Nuremberg
97 Bombers lost on this operation. (Highest losses of the war)
- 30 Nuremburg mission not completed. Shot down by enemy fighter. Wally baled out. Aircraft exploded killing Colin, George, Johnny, Joe, Jock killed by machine gun cannon fire. I was blown clear must have been unconscious.

Running for home being attacked by German fighter. Plaintive from Rear Gunner – “If you don’t get up soon Skipper I’ll get wet feet.” Vivid account by [indecipherable letter} R G. Prettijohn –
A daylight raid on a bright summers day on an op to [indecipherable word] on German airfields which were heavily defended. I counted 50 anti aircraft guns firing at us. The smell of cordite came into the cockpit from shells exploding close to us. The rattle of shrapnel against the aircraft was sinister and Fred suddenly called out “I’ve been hit Skipper.” I went into the Bombaimer’s [sic] position and tore Fred’s shirt open to remove a lump of hot metal. Fortunately, the shrapnel’s speed had been reduced as it hit the perspex in front of Fred. Everyone heard his call out over the intercom “You clot : only got this shirt out of stores this morning.” We couldn’t help laughing. It could have been a nasty incident but Arthur said he heard a voice from behind call him by a schoolboy nickname. He was so surprised he turned and did not get hit in his face.

MISSING AIRMAN’S GRAVE FOUND
IN January 1944 twenty one years old Sgt. John Dyer, R.A.F.V.R., radio operator in a Lancaster, failed to return to Metheringham R.A.F. station from a raid over Germany.
Now, after more than four years’ silence, there has come to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dyer, of Stathern, the news of his final resting place. The information is contained in a letter from R.A.F. Missing Research and Enquiry Service in Germany.
The search officers’ investigations reveal that the aircraft crashed near Nudow, which lies eight miles south-west of Berlin, and that all the members of the crew, who must have been killed instantly, were buried by the Germans in the cemetery there.
IN BRITISH CEMETERY
Individual identification has been possible in the case of four occupants of the grave, among them John Dyer, “and the remains have been reverently re-interred in the British Military Cemetery at Heerstrasse district of Berlin, where he now rests in Grave 27, Row A, Plot V, with his comrades in adjoining graves”
The letter goes on to explain “that this policy of re-burial has been agreed on by the Government because it is felt that our fallen should not be left in isolated cemeteries throughout Germany, but should rest together in special military cemeteries, the soil of which will always be British. A photograph will be sent to you, though this may take some considerable time.”
John, an Old Grammarian, joined the R.A.F.V.R. when he was 18 years old. He completed his training at Cottesmore R.A.F. station, and was posted to Syerston as a wireless operator in a Lancaster aircraft.

No. 106 Squadron,
Royal Air Force,
Metheringham,
Lincs.
REB/DO. 29th. November 1943.
Dear Mrs. Read.
I am writing to express my sympathy in the anxiety which must yours upon receipt of the news that your Son, Flying Officer A.W. Read is missing from operations.
He was the Wireless Operator of an aircraft which left here on the night of 26th, November 1943 to take part in a raid on Berlin. Nothing was heard after take-off and I regret the aircraft did not return.
There is absolutely no knowledge of what happened, and one can only assume that the aircraft was a victim of either anti-aircraft fire or fighter. In either case, however, there is a possibility that the crew were able to bale out, and that although prisoners-of-war are quite safe. We all hope that this is indeed the case.
Your Son had taken part in twenty-three bombing raids. He was a Wireless Operator of consierable [sic] ability and I know his Captain placed the greatest reliance in his work.
Once again, both personally and on behalf of the whole Squadron, I offer you my deep sympathy.
Yours truly, R E Baxter

AIR MINISTRY,
LONDON ROAD,
STANMORE,
MIDDLESEX.
P.411125/S.14 (Cas.) 18th January, 1955.
Dear Mrs. Read,
Thank you for your letter dated 10th January.
The responsibility for the erection of permanent headstones is that of the Imperial War Graves Commission, Wooburn House, Wooburn Green, High Wycombe, Bucks. I am therefore sending a copy of your letter to the Secretary of the ``commission, who will no doubt reply to you direct and confirm whether or not the headstone has been erected over your son’s grave.
No arrangements have been made to re-photograph graves after the erection of the permanent headstones, and the Department has made no promises to next of kin that such photographs would be provided. It is known, however, that the British Legion, 49, Pall Mall, London S.W.1. has a photographic service in connection with war Graves and would arrange to have a special photograph of your son’s grave taken at a moderate fee.
On receiving confirmation from the Imperial War Graves Commission that your son’s headstone has been erected, you may therefore like to address an enquiry to the British Legion.
I would like to suggest, however, that you postpone placing an order for a photograph until the spring or early summer, when conditions are obviously more suitable.
Yours sincerely, [signature] M. Crabbe [/signature]
Mrs. M. Read,
30, Newland Street West,
Lincoln.

IMPERIAL WAR GRAVES COMMISSION,
Wooburn House, Wooburn Green,
High Wycombe, Bucks
[Crest]
20 OCT 1950
Dear Sir or Madam,
I venture to ask for your assistance in completing the attached form.
The Imperial War Graves Commission have been entrusted, for this war as for the last, with the duty of permanently commemorating those members of His Majesty's Naval, Military and Air Forces from all parts of the British Empire who die in the service of the Allied cause. The Commission will consequently be responsible for marking and caring for the graves, or, in the case of those who have no known grave, for making provision for other suitable form of commemoration and also for recording all names in permanent Registers. This work will be carried out at the cost of the Commission, whose funds are provided by all the Governments of the Empire.
A headstone of the same simple pattern will, as before, mark each grave; thus every man rich or poor, General or Private, will be honoured in the same way.
In order to carry out these duties, and to complete the permanent Registers, the Commission desire certain additional information which they hope you will be so good as to supply on the attached for, which should then be returned to the Commission.
You will notice that a space has been left on the form for a personal inscription to be selected by the relatives, if they so desire, for engraving on the headstone. Where, owing to the course of military operations, it has so far been impossible to find or identify a grave, no personal inscription should be inserted on the form. Should the grave eventually be discovered, I shall, of course, write to you again, and you will then have a further opportunity to choose an inscription.
Some relatives have expressed the wish to pay for this personal inscription, and an opportunity will be given to them later on of meeting the cost. Should they not wish to do so, the cost will be borne by the Commission.
Owing to increase in the cost of engraving Personal Inscriptions since the attached form was printed, the amount which may be paid by relatives has been raised from 7s. 6d. To £1.
Yours faithfully,
F. HIGGINSON,
Secretary.
