WAAF Sgts’ Mess,
RCAF Station,
Leeming,
Yorks.
December 1st 1944.
My dearest Mamma,
Very many thanks for sending the frock, shoes, etc. – it was nice of you to send them so promptly, tho’ I tried to tell Daddy over that faint line that there was no hurry. You see we hope to have a party in the mess & dress up properly for it for a change – all very unofficial, of course. Technically we are supposed to wear uniform at all functions, but nobody who matters sees us [inserted] in [underlined] our [/underlined] mess [/inserted] We usually wear slacks & jumpers or shirt-blouses.
Thank you so much for your letter – I’m sorry, but I forgot to bring it on duty with me so I shall try & rememember [sic] what you said.
So Angela starts today in the ATS – I’m so glad she is at last doing what she had been trying for the past year to do. Yes, you will be missing her, even if not in a practical sense! However, it’s my opinion that within a year she will have improved & changed beyond recognition. She’ll find it tough at first but I think she realises that. Maybe she’ll be able to get home from Guildford during [deleted] hed [/deleted] her training.
I [underlined] wish [/underlined] I could get home for Christmas [inserted] but [/inserted] it wouldn’t be fair to leave Betty & Connie to cope & miss all the fun here thro’ being tired & on duty so much, I don’t if know anyone who is getting leave at Christmas – perhaps it has been stopped anyway.
Please excuse the squalid paper, but I ain’t got no notepaper at the moment.
On Monday I gave myself a treat & took myself to Harrogate – it was the first time I had been off camp (other than to Jocks, which is only just outside camp, & North Allerton which is 9 miles away) [deleted] for [/deleted] since my leave. I had quite a lot of money – about £6, as we had been paid an extra wage with back pay added.
[page break]
You remember I couldn’t get my coupons accepted anywhere when I was on leave – I tried again in Harrogate & succeeded. I bought a pale blue-green shirt blouse to wear with my slacks, two prs pants & a “BR” – these items to be purchased with great care for best wear. The blouse has a [indecipherable word] collar which looks rather smart, & soft buttons.
[sketch]
I also bought two very sweet cot pillow cases hand embroidered for one of the Waaf Sgts here, who is having a baby next March.
[sketch]
I had tea in Standings – there are armchairs & settees at the tables round the wall, so I got a very comfortable armchair at a small table near the window. I saw a frightful film, of which I forget the title, then caught the bus to Ripon & from thence to the end of the long road to the camp. It was snowing during the day & there was 2” snow either side of the Great North Road.
The other night the Intelligence section gave a party in North Allerton Stn. Hotel & they invited Betty, Connie, & [deleted] I [/deleted] me – Connie was on duty but the Senior Flying control Officer let her off, as it was quiet. The only other female there was a very charming WD [deleted] (Scandinavian Waaf) [/deleted] officer. We had an [underlined] enormous [/underlined] dinner with chicken etc. & plenty of drinks with it & afterwards retired to the smoking room & had a sing song, dancing & general merriment. Connie & I got there in a car belonging to a staff Wing Commander – he insisted on driving on the right side of the road, which was rather tricky
Last night we saw a Canadian Navy show – it really was wizard. A Russian played the violin & there were many sea chanties, etc.
[page break]
On Wednesday night we gave a screening party in our mess for a very newly screened crew – I was on duty from 7pm & so missed the party & meeting the crew.
Our precious crew – the one which went to PFF – hadn’t started operating yet, & the poor kids are getting terribly fed up, the reason is that they have only just got a bomb aimer – I told you their own B/A refused to go with them (& so he has nearly finished his tour of ops., & the boys have only about 16 trips at the moment).
I have just been watching an aircraft land in very bad visibility – the flying control office had quite a time getting him down by shooting off a number of flares to guide him down to the runway, which was invisible to the pilot until he actually came in to land.
I wonder a lot these days about when the war is over – it’s not much use trying to plan anything at the moment. I want to strike out on my own, but at the same time I am longing to come home & be with the family – perhaps I can combine the two. I am in two minds about leaving the service, which is secure at least – but I think that I shall want to leave as soon as my job is redundant, which will be the day hostilities ease – if it were not for the fact that I do love my job & my friends here, I should feel I had had quite enough of service life – [underlined] & [/underlined] uniform. My group for demobilisation is 32 – not too bad considering I am young, & single. The twins won’t be out until long after me, I imagine!
It's very nice of you to think of making some pants for me for Christmas – I certainly could do with them – they seem to wear out at such a terrific rate. Those camiknix you gave me – last Christmas was it? – are in shreds, tho’ they’ve done wonderfully considering how often I wash & iron ‘em! I have two older pairs of cami’s which I had at Huntingdon 2 years ago – may tear if I look at them!! My service pants are the same – they won’t change ‘em unless they’re very bad.
[page break]
Well, Ma, I think I’d better stop & rest your weary eyes. Please thank Rose very much for her letter & the wonderful drawings, which caused much amusement in the mess – I’ll answer it as soon as I can I am so sorry I can’t get to her play – I never seem to be home at the right time, do I?
My love to Dad & Aunt.
Your darling

Corporal Dennis.G.Terry – Fitter IIA Airframe
[squadron crest] 10 Squadron – RAF Leeming 1941 [photograph]
Early in 1941 a 10 Squadron Whitley bomber returning from OPS, landed at RAF Waddington damaging its tail resulting in the bomber being grounded.
I was sent along with other tradesmen and a replacement tail section by road to repair the aircraft and return it to serviceable flight. On arrival at RAF Waddington we were issued with "Temporary Meal Permit" for the airmen's mess.
I am returning this pass to you a little late, for some reason it was never handed back after the repairs to the Whitley bomber were completed.
While waiting for the aircrew to fly us back to RAF Leeming I decided to have a look around the hangers, I looked into one hanger via a side door and noticed a yellow marked four engined bomber with a large "P" roundel on it, I was then approached by an armed guard who promptly told me to leave as this hanger was "Out of Bounds". I realised later when the Lancaster entered RAF service that this aircraft was in fact the Lancaster bomber prototype.
A few months later Lancaster's operated out of RAF Waddington with 44 Squadron.
This memory of my visit to RAF Waddington has stayed with me all these years.
Dennis.

Dennis Terry.
Managed to join the RAF in 1939 after multiple attempts due to his protected trade as a tool maker. Initial training was undertaken at Hendnesford camp near to the site of the current raceway and on completion attained Airframe Fitter status (fix everything relating to the airframe except engines, munitions and instruments).
His first posting was in 1940 to 10sqdn RAF Leeming where he worked on Whitley bombers. He often recalled how the airfield was 'beaten up' by spitfire's from nearby RAF Catterick with some flying so low between the hangars. While at 10 sqdn in 1941, he was sent along with other tradesmen and a replacement tail section by road to repair a stranded Whitley bomber and return it to serviceable flight. Dennis recalls "On arrival at RAF Waddington we were issued with "Temporary Meal Permit" for the airmen's mess to use once the job was complete. While waiting for the aircrew to fly us back to RAF Leeming I decided to have a look around the hangars, I looked into one hangar via a side door and noticed a yellow marked four engine bomber with a large "P" roundel on it, I was then approached by an armed guard who promptly told me to leave as this hangar was "Out of Bounds". I realised later when the Lancaster entered RAF service that this aircraft was in fact the Lancaster bomber protype."
[pass] [meal permit]
Dennis visited RAF Waddington in 2008 and returned the meal permit some 67 years late. The pass is now currated in the base museum.
In 1942 he was posted to Canada to the SFTS at RCAF Swift Current servicing Harvards and Oxfords.
On returning from Canada in 1944 he was then posted to 166sqdn RAF Kirmington as fitter 2A status and made NCO, responsible for the complete airframe servicing of 'C' Flight.

As far as Dennis was concerned Lancaster ME746-R2 was his aircraft and he made sure that is [sic] was kept in top condition.
In early 1945 R2 received the DSO after completing 100 operation and Dennis can be seen holding the DSO with F/O Musselman DFC representing both the flight and ground crew's effort to achieve such a milestone.

[underlined] LANCASTER AIRCRAFT ME.746 – R2 [/underlined]
This aircraft has now completed 100 sorties against the enemy, in a wide variety of attacks, ranging from targets in enemy occupied territory to the deepest penetrations made into Germany itself.
Throughout their sorties this aircraft has carried many gallant and courageous crews through the fiercest opposition which the enemy has been able to offer, and has never failed to bring them safely home.
The magnificent record established by 'R2' has only been made possible by the devotion to duty of the ground crews. Called upon to service their charge at all hours of the day and night, they have set a standard of serviceability which it will be difficult to equal. The successful completion of 100 sorties by the aircraft bears striking testimony to their skill.
In recognition of the fine achievement of [missing letters]he fine achievement of this aircraft , and as a tribute from the aircrew of the Squadron to the ground crew whose efforts have met with such remarkable success, the aircraft is awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

At some time during 1945-6, R2 was sent to Boscombe Down for flight evaluation after it had completed 100 ops and the aircraft received a glowing service report with no faults being found.
After this R2 was one of 166sqdn's 'show off' aircraft and everything was kept in top condition.
In total R2 completed 124 ops and everyone was hand painted by Dennis, R2 was eventually scrapped in 1946

Dennis was asked to stay on in the RAF with improved rank and move to RAF Binbrook, but he chose to leave after fulfilling his duty.
After leaving he received a Commendation from Bomber Command for Good Service which is signed by N.J Bottomly Vice Chief of Staff, he did not believe that many of these were issued to ground staff.

Airframe fitter 2A status status (fix everything relating to the airframe except engines, munitions and instruments)
First posting was in 1940 to 10sqdn RAF Leeming where he worked on Whitleys.
Incidently, while at 10 sqdn he and a team of fitters were taken to RAF Waddington to repair a battle damaged Whitley, where he found one of the first prototype Lancaster’s in one of the hangers [sic], all he can remember is that it had a letter ‘P’ in yellow on the side before he was asked to leave the hangar.
In 1942 he was posted to Canada to the SFTS servicing Harvards and Oxfords.
On returning from Canada in 1944 he was then posted to 166sqdn RAF Kirmington and made NCO, responsible for the complete airframe servicing of 'C' Flight.
'V' for Victor
'U' for Uncle
'R' for Roger
'R' for Roger was replaced shortly after he arrived with 'R2' Roger Squared.
As far as he was concerned R2 was his aircraft and he made sure that is [sic] was kept in top condition. At some time during 1945-6, R2 was sent down to Boscome Down for flight evaluation after it had completed 100 ops and the aircraft received a glowing service report with no faults being found.
After this R2 was one of 166sqdn's show off aircraft and everything was kept in top condition.
In total R2 completed 124 ops and everyone was hand painted by Dennis, R2 was eventually scrapped in 1947.
Dennis was asked to stay on in the RAF with improved rank and move to RAF Binbrook, but he chose to leave.
After leaving he received a Commendation from Bomber Command for Service and Devotion to Duty which is signed by N.J Bottomly Vice Chief of Staff, he does not believe that many of these were issued to ground staff.
I hope that this information is of use and that you will be able to use the photgraphs [sic] I have sent previously on your web site as it would mean a great deal to him.

[boxed] SQUADRON HISTORIES [/boxed]
[crest]
[italics] THE WINGED HORSE'S HEAD in the badge of 35 Squadron commemorates its co-operation with the cavalry in the First World War. Translation of the motto is "We act with one accord." Authority for the badge was given by King Edward VIII in October, 1936. [/italics]
OVER 400 TIMES THEY LED THE WAY
First of the Pathfinders
NIGHT after night they flew eastwards into danger.
Always they were there, ahead of the main bomber group, leading, guiding, indicating.
To them the men of the R.A.F.'s select Pathfinder Force, goes the highest of praise.
Their magnificent work ensured that Bomber Command's all-out efforts during the Second World War were not wasted, that the bombs hit Germany where it hurt most.
Among the most distinguished of the Pathfinder squadrons was No. 35.
With 7, 83 and 156 Squadrons it formed the nucleus of the force in August, 1942. And from then until the end of the war it supplied marking aircraft for no fewer then 425 attacks.
From St. Nazaire to Berlin and from Turin to Hamburg its aircraft clearly and effectively showed the way.
And the outstanding courage of its crews earned over 50 D.S.O.s, D.F.C.s and D.F.M's
But it wasn't only as a Pathfinder squadron that No. 35 gained distinction.
For 18 months before becoming one it had already been [missing letter]itting hard at a great variety of targets, from factories at Manheim to the battleship Tirpit[missing letter] at Trondheim.
It was, in fact, the [missing letters]rst squadron to us Halifaxes. It received them at Leeming, Yorks. on November 20. 1940.
From Madras
[italics] The money for them was [missing letters]vided by people of the Mad[missing letters] Presidency. And in appre[missing letters]tion the squadron has [missing word] been officially known as [missing numbers] (Madras Presidency) Squadron [/italics]
It was the intention of [missing word] Madras Provincial War Com[missing letters]tee to commemorate the gift [missing word] some more permanent to[missing letters] Soon after the war, [missing words] presented the squadron with a writing-table set, comprising an inkstand, blotting-pad and roller-blotter, all of Indian beaten silver and bearing the Madras Presidency arms.
No. 35 also saw much action in the First World War.
It was formed at Thetford, Norfolk, from a nucleus of 9 (Reserve) Squadron, on February 1, 1916.
After a period of training it flew to France on January 25, 1917, as a Corps squadron. Its aircraft were Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8s.
[italics] It was soon in the thick of the fray. Without respite it did sterling work in the Battles of Arras, the Somme, Ypres and Cambrai. [/italics]
Casualties were often heavy, but there was never any sign of faltering.
Advancing with the Army and carrying out a mixed bag of duties, from bombing to laying smoke-screens, it kept up the pace [indecipherable word] up to the Armistice.
Ten-year break
It returned to Britain early in 1919 and was disbanded on June 26 at Netheravon.
When it was re-formed on March 1, 1929, at Bircham Newton, Norfolk, it became a bomber squadron.
At first it received D.H. 9As, but they were soon replaced by Fairey 3Fs. Then in 1933 came Gordons.
In October, 1935, after the Italians had invaded Abyssinia, the squadron was sent to the Middle East. It stayed ten months.
Back home it faced a period of reorganisation. After moving in 1938 from Worthy Down to Cottesmore, it received Battles and Ansons. Then in 1939 came a move to Cranfield.
Quick start
For the first year of the war No. 35's duties were confined to training. But it soon made up for lost time.
Based at Linton-on-Ouse, it struck its first blow at the enemy on March 11, 1941, with a raid on the docks at Le Havre.
Other early targets included Bremen, Essen, Hamburg, Hanover, [indecipherable name], Kiel, Rotterdam, Stettin and Turin.
Several attacks were made on the battleships [italics] Scharnhorst and Gnelsenau [/italics] at Brest.
Among first crew-members to win awards were S/Ldr. J. B. Tait, who gained a bar to his D.S.O., and S/Ldr. T. P. A. Bradley who won a D.S.O. and a bar to his D.F.C. The latter was killed three years later in the Far East.
Early in 1942, before it became a Pathfinder squadron, No. 35 hit continually at vital targets in the Ruhr and other parts of Germany.
A change came on two successive nights in April, when attacks were made on the [italics] Tirpitz [/italics] in Trondheim Fjord.
1,000-bomber raid
[italics] Then on May 30 the squadron took part in the first 1,000-bomber raid on Cologne. [/italics]
First Pathfinder operation was made on August 18 against Flensburg. It was not a success.
The crews quickly gained proficiency, however, and were soon providing an effective spearhead to raid after raid.
In an attack on November 18 on Turin, the C.O., W/Cdr. B. V. Robinson, flew back to base at Gravely with his aircraft on fire.
He was killed the following August during a second spell with the squadron. Then a group captain, he had gained a D.S.O. and a D.F.C. and bar
Almost nightly
An attack on Berlin marked the opening of 1943. Then came raids on U-boat bases at Brest, Lorient and St. Nazaire, followed by almost nightly trips to the Ruhr.
Included in targets during June were the Schneider armament works at Le Creusot.
During that month F/Sgt. N. F. Williams, an Australian rear gunner, became the first member of the squadron to win a C.G.M.
[italics] On a raid on Dusseldorf, though partly paralysed through wounds in his body and legs, he stayed in his turret and shot down two enemy aircraft. [/italics]
He already held a D.F.M. and bar.
In August Nuremburg and Peenemunde were among the targets. Then, as another winter of all-out effort began, strong forces were led to Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Kassel, Mannheim, Munich and many other towns.
Another outstanding act of gallantry occurred in December S/Ldr. J. Sale, returning to [indecipherable word] with an aircraft extensively damaged by fire, ordered his crew to bale out.
But when he discovered one member had an unserviceable parachute, he stayed at the controls and brought off a most difficult touch-down.
The following March he crashed in Germany and was seriously wounded.
Conversion
That month No. 35 converted to Lancasters and began blasting pre-invasion targets.
[italics] After D-Day it augmented strategic bombing with tactical operations. It gave close support to our troops at Caen and Falaise and bombed the heavy-gun batteries at Walcheren. [/italics]
Attacks against flying-bomb sites and important store centres also formed part of the programme.
On a raid against Dusseldorf in November, S/Ldr. G. A. Patrick, a veteran of 118 sorties, kept on course even though his navigational aids were useless, and made a faultless bombing run.
No letting up
Operating by both day and night, the squadron kept hard at it right to the end.
Targets hit during the last months of the war included Bonn, Cologne, Goch, Mainz and Potsdam.
Final tasks were dropping food to the Dutch and flying home repatriated prisoners of war.
[italics] In July and August, 1946, No. 35 was honoured by being chosen to carry out the R.A.F.'s first post-war goodwill tour. [/italics]
Today it is still a vital part of Britain's striking force, being equipped with Canberras and based at Marham.
There is no doubt that it can always be counted on to maintain the magnificent pattern of efficiency and devotion to duty set by its gallant wartime crews.
[italics] Most of the information in this article was supplied by Air Force historian [indecipherable words] [/italics]

[inserted] DAILY TELEGRAPH MON. 29/12/1997 [/inserted]
SIR – I was disappointed that your obituary of Professor R. V. Jones (Dec. 20) mentioned only the Lancasters of Bomber Command. At the start of the Second World War the Wellington, Hampden and Blenheim did sterling service. Later the Command became all four-engined with the Sterling, Halifax and Lancaster.
While the Sterling was not a success, valuable work was done by the 6,000-odd Halifaxes, especially the later versions fitted with Hercules engines. Indeed, some Halifax crews loved to cut one engine on return from a raid and then overtake Lancasters while making an appropriate gesture. And while the Lancaster served only with Bomber Command, the more versatile Halifax operated with both Coastal and Transport Commands and dropped supplies and agents in occupied Europe.
Why is it, these days, that only the Lancaster is ever mentioned?

At approximately 1505, the Anson was seen diving, with both engines running at full power, from 4,000 feet and failing to recover before hitting the ground roughly a mile E of Arbroath airfield, Angus. An examination of the wreckage revealed that most of the fabric had peeled away from the starboard wing. All rest in cemeteries scattered across the United Kingdom and it seems likely that the funeral for W/O Farlam of Neutral Bay in New South Wales was arranged by relatives as he is buried in Surrey at Cheam (St. Dunstan) Churchyard, Sutton and Cheam.

T/o 1525 Honeybourne for a navigation exercise involving the crew, which was made up of a screened pilot and wireless operator, four trainees and two passengers, in overwater flying. At 1955, the bomber returned to base and was seen, while on the cross-wind leg, to lower the flaps. As it did so, so the nose appeared to rise quite sharply. Immediately, the flaps were retracted and the Whitley continued with its approach but as it turned finals, and the flaps were once again lowered, the nose pitched up and the aircraft stalled, plunging to the ground on the boundary of the airfield, where it burst into flames. Those who died rest in various cemeteries across the United Kingdom. This was the first major accident involving an aircraft from the unit since its formation in mid-March 1942.

Leeming, Yorks.
Dear F/Sgt. Puskas,
I have your letter of the 15th inst. for which I thank you. As a result, you have all been enrolled as life members of the above Club, and I am having your official membership cards prepared. I hope to receive these from the processors during the next two or three weeks, when I will send them along, together with the Club badges.
I should like to congratulate you on your escape, and hope that you sustained no injuries.
Would you be good enough to let me have the full addresses of the crew members? I should like these in connection with post-war activities of the Club.
Best wishes to you all,
Yours sincerely,
[signature]

Hon. Secretary.
This is to Certify that
