Royal Air Force,
Bicester,
Oxon.
6th June, 1944.
Dear W/C. Cheshire,
Herewith the lecture of which I spoke.
If you have any comments I should be grateful for them. As you will see we have what amounts to three models which viewed from 6 yards standing up represents 1200ft at 1200 yards, 450 ft and 450 yards and 150 ft and 150 yards, the last being a bit optimistic, but when we asked for the model at the beginning we didn't know much about the very low point. However, fortuitously it has turned out the right size since it covers really both flares and very low work without an extra model. These distances are judged on the worst viewing angle from the Mosquito, since we like to teach in such a way that the synthetic is worse than the real.
A point which still worries me, from the instruction point of view, is how to know you are at 300ft or so. I'm never happy about altimeters when they get over 50 miles away from base, and the Radar type would be impossible to get for our quantity even if they had no limitations. Is here any crew work that one could standardise from the teaching standpoint? I have been unavoidably vague in the script – one watch the horizon and one the ground etc. (“if you can, this kind of thing”).
A scheme which might interest you has been tried lately by Mr Thomas of Leamington Spa (made the models Bomber Command use. He makes rapid artist scetches[sic] of any target as seen from any height, time (night or day), bearing, from a vertical photograph. I introduced him to 2 Group but don't know how far they have got. He may be of some help to you. I have not mentioned you to him. You may, of course, know him. Leamington Spa 2190, Ministry of Home Security – Camouflage.
Thanking you for your help.

Dear Cheshire,
I am writing to confirm that Thursday morning this morning of this week will be convenient for Mr. Perring to meet you. I understand that you will ring me up that morning to let me know whether you can come or not. If you are unable to come Mr Perring will probably be able to see you on Friday afternoon if that is convenient to you.
In discussing instrument troubles with F/L Scarrett and others at your Squadron at Coningsby, I found that there were quite a number of detailed points, particularly in connection with navigation equipment, for
[crest National Scheme for Disabled Men]
[page break]
example, D.R. Compass, A.P.I., etc. on which I think we could help you. I am therefore arranging for my navigation people to get into touch with Scarrett with a view to sending up Sergeant Jones who has been attached to us for a long time and who can effectively deal with all the points in question.
I have got someone looking up exhibition copies of some of he photographs which you said you would particularly like to have. I will send these to you as soon as they are available.
I must thank you for treating me so well during my recent visit when I was particularly interested to meet you and your people and to discuss so much of interest to us both.
Yours sincerely,

Sir,
I have recently heard that you have returned to operations, and I wish to know I you have a vacancy for a Wireless Operator on the Squadron.
I had the pleasure of being under your command at Linton-on-Ouse until April 1943, when I was posted to Melbourne.
I have recently returned to this Squadron after a walking tour on the Continent and I am now a ‘spare body’.
Therefore, if you have a vacancy Sir, would you please inform me.
I have the honour to be

[Air Ministry Crest]
Royal Air Force Station
Coningsby,
Lincoln.
26th November, 1943.
Ref:-
Dear Cheshire,
Confirming our conversations, it is agreed that you will have your Squadron Working Parade independently after next Monday – the parade being held in Squadron formation on the tarmac between your Squadron Offices and Hangers at 07.50 hours. Occasional variations of time may be necessary to fit in with your Squadron arrangements and on Sundays, when operational commitments permit, work will not start until 09.30 hours.
I should like at least three Officers to be present on parade each day, one Squadron Leader or Flight Lieutenant to act as Officers in charge of the Parade, and two Flying Officers or Pilot Officers.
With regards to the question of passes for airmen, what was intended was that Flight Commanders should be given to understand that I and airman asks on a particular occasion to have his pass extended from 23.59 hours this might be done up to 08.00 hours the following day, the appropriate time being entered on the pass. I do not, however, want all passes automatically treated as valid up to 08.00 hours.
I realise that the original mistakes were made without your knowledge and that noe they have been put right.
Yours

Dear Vic,
Sory [sic] I have [inserted] not [/inserted] written you before but I am not any [indecipherable word] at this letter writing game and besides we have been doing a lot of flying, and hunting snatch in my spare time.
I hope the ankle is better now and that you can get around. It must have been an awful handicap, [indecipherable word] on a bed, but I hope you managed to cope and drag yourself on and not waste a minute of the twenty five years that are left.
[page break]
We are at a lovely station and having quite a good time. I like the work very much and have quite a good bunch of fellows to fly with. It is a darn good outfit and I am sure glad I came. We should have been [inserted] here [/inserted] weeks ago but some body at Chippy had finger trouble and we were very late getting here. It made us quite mad especially when we think of missing the good times we have here.
I wrote Peter a quite [?] ago but did not get a reply. Can you tell me what he is doing & whether he got the letter.

There wasn't much to write about what we are doing but we have a lot of fun, and do very well in town as there is an abundance of that stuff than stuffs and we manage to do our share. Hope to get down to see you sometime but don’t know when.
I will finish this now but expect to write soon again. Write and let me know how things are going and how you are getting on. (Right leg over first)

Madam,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your husband, Pilot Officer Kenneth James Broderick, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 8/9th July, 1942, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as captain set out to bomb Wilhelmshaven and failed to return. This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquires will be made through the International Red Cross Committee and as soon as any definite news is received, you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your husband is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.
Mrs. K. J. Broderick,
C/o Mrs. Larrington,

Dear Mr Madgett.
In case you did not know, I thought you would like to know that No 61 Squadron has moved to a new locality, it is Conningsby, Lincoln. Stanley’s Post Office savings book has been found among some papers in the Flight Office during the clearance from Syerston, & the F/O sent it on to me with a note to that effect. He also said, “There is still no news of your son, but we are still hopeful that good news will come through in the near future”. So we must keep hoping.
I trust that Mrs Madgett & yourself are well
Yours sincerely

97 (Straits Settlements) Squadron,
Royal Air Force,
CONINGSBY,
Lincolnshire.
10th June, 1944.
Dear Mr. Pritchard,
It is with deep regret that I must confirm that your son, Sergeant A. Pritchard, failed to return from operations this morning, the 10th June, 1944, and I wish to express the great sympathy which the Squadron feel with you during the anxious time which must pas before any news comes through.
Your son was taking part in an operation against a military target near Etemps, France, the Flight Engineer of the aircraft. No news has been received since the crew left base last night; we can only hope that they had the chance to bale out and are safe, even as prisoners of war.
Sergeant Pritchard had only been serving with this Squadron for a sort while, but during that period he was able to operate with us on the opening of the Second Front. He had operated with another Squadron prior to coming here, and had taken part in fifteen sorties, many of which were against major objectives in Germany. On this occasion he was working with his usual crew. Your son was keen and capable as a flight engineer, and he and his crew will be a great loss to the Squadron; we shall all miss them very much.
It is desired to explain that the request in the telegram notifying you of the casualty was included with the object of avoiding your son's chance of escape being prejudiced by undue publicity in case he is still at large. This is not to say that any information about him is available, but is a precaution adopted in the case of all personnel reported missing.
His kit and personal effects are being carefully collected and will be sent to the R.A.F. Central Depository, Colnbrook, Slough, from whom you will hear in due course.
If any news is received you will be communicated with immediately, and in the meantime I join with you in hoping that we shall soon hear favourable news of your son and the remainder of the crew.
Yours sincerely,

18th June, 1943.
Dear Mr Price
As the Officer responsible for the supervision of your son’s personal belongings I do want to assure you of my deepest sympathy with you during this period of anxious waiting. Nothing is known yet beyond the fact that the aircraft failed to return from an operational exercise and we can only hope that eventually we may hear that the crew is safe, even if prisoners of war. It is extremely hard for you to have to wait for more definite news, and I should like you to feel that we both understand and sympathise with you in your anxiety.
Your son’s effects have been carefully packed, and in accordance with Air Ministry Orders they are now being sent to:-
The Central Depository,
R.A.F. Station, Colnbrook,
Slough, Bucks.
I have to advise you that certain Statutory formalities must be completed before any articles are released, but you can send any enquiries to “The Officer Commanding, The Central Depository”, if you so wish.
If there is anything further I can do to help you please do not hesitate to write me. Meanwhile I express the hope that the future will bring you good news.

Dear Allen,
Well, this is [underlined] IT [/underlined] at last. We reported to Coningsby on Fri night but they decided there wasn't any place for us there – called up “group” and found out we shouldn't have been posted there in the first place. We stayed Coningsby about 12 hours then they flew us up here.
We will be flying in Manchesters and from the navigators standpoint it's tops. Bags of room – everything handy. I got my first

glimpse of an automatic bomb site. All the Manchesters are equipped with them. Looks as though will be training a few weeks yet. I thought I'd finished that bloody beacon hopping at night.
P/O Sawyer and I are billeted off the station about 8 miles – but not for long if we can help it. They have stuck us with an old couple who have never had any children of there [sic] own – don't tolerate drinking of any sort and “of course you went to church this morning”. It takes a half hour bus ride to get out here [deleted] and [/deleted] the bus

leaves the Station at 9:30. So you see every evening is broken up.
I had a very successful 7 days leave. Thanks to you for starting it off properly. I enjoyed very much going to Coventry and meeting your family. We must have the record for travel between Coventry & Warwick – 3 hours to go about nine miles. That ride was one of the highlights of my leave.
I stayed in Leamington until Wednesday morning while I was there I managed to get into Coventry one night -saw “Merchant of Venice” at Stratford – went through

a brewery at Banbury (but only drank port)
The last two days I spent quietly with a couple of old aunts in dear old Surrey. Doesn't that sound peaceful?
On my way back through London I met several Canadians who I trained with. The first chap of our course to land in this country has been reported missing over the Irish Sea – he was still at O.T.O.
Give my best regards to Tunny. I miss his guiding hand when I do a little drinking – he knows my weakness.
[page break]
(5)
Lichfield probably thinks we are stationed at Coningsby so would you drop into the PMC's office and have them send our mail up here instead. P/O Sawyer & P/O SPEIR are here too.
Cheerio for now. Let us know where you and Tunny are posted.
Best regards
John

Dear
I enclose a memorandum on the results of the attachments of a Farnborough “George” team to 617. The improvement they made to all our aircraft has been quite phenomenal, to say the least. I am therefore convinced that you would be interested in the proposals and recommendations which F/Lt. Hole has put forward.

No.617 Squadron,
R.A.F., Station,
Coningsby, Lincoln
25th November 1943.
Dear
I am afraid that for the time being it is impossible for me to make any arrangements to leave the Station, and in any case I could not get Group's approval.
As soon as things become easier, and I have more free time, I will let you know, when perhaps we can then arrange another lecture.
I hope all is well with you, and that I shall have the opportunity of seeing you before very long.
Yours very sincerely,
GLC
Wing Commander F.H.Thomas,
R.A.F., Station,
Aston Down,
Somerset.

R.A.F. Woodhall,
Lincoln.
GLC/DO/43.
11 Jan 1944.
Dear
I am sorry to trouble you but when the Squadron arrived at Coningsby they brought with them 20 electro plated tankards which were inscribed “617 Squadron Lancasters”. They were presented by the manufacturers of the aircraft after the Dam raid and have considerable sentimental value.
When we finally counted them up prior to leaving Coningsby for Woodhall, it was found there were only 15, and I would very much appreciate it if you could take action from your end.
Yours
