Donald Evans RAF navigator’s, air bomber’s, air gunner’s and flight engineer’s flying log book
D Evans’s Flight Engineer’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 19 June 1944 to 26 June 1947, detailing his flying training and operations flown as Flight Engineer. He was stationed at RAF St Athan (4 SoTT), RAF Winthorpe (1661 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Metheringham (106 Squadron), RAF Warboys (PNTU), RAF Coningsby and RAF Hemswell (83 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Stirling, Lancaster and Lincoln. He flew on 13 night operations with 106 Squadron and 11 with 83 Squadron, total 24 (but his total in log book is 25). Targets were Munster, Karlsruhe, Kaiserlauten, Brunswick, Bergen, Dusseldorf, Dortmund-Ems canal, Hamburg, Trondheim, Munich, Horten, mining (Danzig Bay), Bohlen, Lutzkendorf, Wurtsburg, Molbis, Cham and Komotau. Post war he flew on one Exodus operation, one Cooks Tour operation and 3 Dodge operations. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Anderson, Flight Lieutenant Brown and Flight Lieutenant Watts. The four final pages of his log book are filled with autographs from his colleagues.

He was stationed at RAF Yatesbury (2 Radio School), RAF Manby (Empire Air Armament School), RAF West Freugh (4 OAFU), RAF Honeybourne (24 OTU), RAF Topcliffe (1659 HCU), RAF Skipton-on-Swale (433 RCAF Squadron), RAF Warboys (PNTU), RAF Downham Market (635 Squadron) and RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Elgin (20 OTU). Aircraft flown in were Dominie, Anson, Whitley, Halifax, Lancaster and Wellington. He flew 32 night operations (two early returns) with 433 Squadron and 7 night and 7 day operations with 635 Squadron, a total of 46 (two early return). Targets were Berlin, mining, Stuttgart, Schweinfurt, Dusseldorf, Karlsruhe, Essen, Nuremburg, Aulnoye, unspecified French targets, Ruhr unspecified, Dortmund, Boulogne, Dessau, Kassel, Wuppertal, Zwiebrucken, Nurnberg, Bremen,Bottrop, Osnabruck, Kiel, Potsdam and Berchtesgarten. His pilot on operations were Pilot Officer Smith, Flying Officer Eyolfson, Pilot Officer Watson and Squadron Leader Ashworth.

Detailing his flying training, operations flown and post war flying duties with 617 Squadron. He was stationed at RCAF Picton, RCAF Mount Hope, RAF Penrhos, RAF Llandwrog, RAF Husbands Bosworth, RAF Market Harborough, RAF Winthorpe, RAF Syerston, RAF Woodhall Spa and RAF Binbrook. Aircraft flown in were Anson, Bolingbroke, Wellington, Stirling, and Lancaster. He flew a total of 19 operations with 617 Squadron, 18 daylight and one night. He also flew one operation Exodus. Targets were Tromso, Urft Dam, Rotterdam, Ijmuiden, Oslo Fjord, Bergen, Bielefeld Viaduct, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Bremen, Farge, Hamburg, Stettin, Heligoland, Berchtesgaden and Brussels. His pilot on operations was Flight Lieutenant Leavitt.

A J M Hennington’s Navigator’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 02 September 1943 to 30 July 1946. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as navigator: Brüx, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Düsseldorf, Friedrichshafen, Gdynia, Gottingen, Gulf of Gdansk, Hamburg, Harburg, Horten, Ladbergen, Leuna, Mittelland Canal, Munich, Neubrandenburg and Oslofjord.
He was stationed at RCAF Rivers (1 CNS), RAF Dumfries (10 OAFU), RAF Silverstone and Turweston (17 OTU), RAF Wigsley (1654 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Metheringham (106 Squadron), RAF Warboys (PFNTU) and RAF Coningsby (97 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster and Lincoln. He flew on sixteen night and one day operations with 106 Squadron and three night operations with 97 Squadron, total 20 plus two mining and three Exodus.

George Royall's observer's and air gunner's flying log book
George Royall's log book, detailing his RAF flying from September 1943 to November 1945. It records his training as an observer, gunner and bomb aimer, initially at 48 and 42 Air Schools in South Africa. It then records his flying training with 8 Observer Advanced Flying Unit at RAF Mona, 10 Operational Training Unit at RAF Abingdon and finally 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit at RAF Sandtoft. His log book then records his flying with 166 Squadron at RAF Kirmington. This comprises nine bombing operations to Germany, numerous training and practice sorties in Britain and three round trips for Operation Dodge. His pilot on operations was Flight Lieutenant Mansfield.

Navigator’s, air bomber’s and air gunner’s flying log book for Albert Frederick Nye
Navigator’s, air bomber’s and air gunner’s flying log book for Albert Frederick Nye form 13 May 1944 to 31 May 1945. Detailed training schedule, instructional duties and operations flown. Training was undertaken at 10 AGS RAF Barrow, RAF Bitteswell, RAF Winthorpe Notts and RAF Syerston Notts. Operations were all undertaken from RAF Spilsby, Lincolnshire with 207 Squadron. Aircraft flown during training were the Anson, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster Marks I and III. All operational flights were in the Lancaster Mark III. Albert, ‘Bert’, undertook 18 operations with 207 Squadron as a mid upper gunner. Of the 18 operational flights 14 were night flights and 4 day flights. The operations, all in Germany, were: Siegen, Karlsruhe, Politz, Dresden, Rositz, Bohlen, Gravenhorst, Ladbergen, Essen, Lutzkendorff, Wurzberg, Bohlen, Wesel, Nordhausen, Molbis, Leipzig, Pilsen, Flensberg. His pilot on all the operations was Flight Officer ‘Bob’ Halewood, an Australian. Following his final operational flight Bert partook in the repatriation of prisoners of war from Brussels and a flight disposing of incendiaries. Bert was assessed as being ‘an average type’ but he had ‘taken some exceptionally good films on cine camera’.

Hugh Ward's Royal Air Force observer's and air gunner's flying log book
<p>Observer's and air gunners flying log book for Warrant Officer HVT Ward, flight engineer, from 15 September 1942 to 9 September 1945. Detailing his training schedule, operations flown and instructional duties. He was stationed at: RAF St. Athan, RAF Waddington, RAF Wigsley, RAF Syerston and RAF Skellingthorpe.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Ward flew in the following aircraft: Oxford, Manchester, Lancaster Mk1 and Mk 3, Halifax and Stirling. As a flight engineer he carried out 34 operations, 26 night time operations with 44 Squadron followed by a second tour of<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>four daylight and four night time operations with 463 Squadron. Targets were (in order): Genoa, Hamburg, Turin, Stuttgart, Mannerheim, [sic] Nienburg, Gronde river (Gardening), Duisburg, Essen, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Lorient, Milan, Wilhelmshaven, Nürnberg [sic] (Nuremberg), St, Nazaire, Lutzkeneron [sic], Würzburg, Bremen, Wesel, Frage [sic], Nordhausen, Komutov [sic], Juvencourt [sic] (Juvancourt). His pilots on operations were: Pilot Officer Walker, Flight Sergeant Elger, Flight Lieutenant Walker, Flying Officer Riggs and Flying Officer Findlay. In between tours he served as a flight engineer instructor on1661 Conversion Unit, 1654 Conversion Unit and No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School. Ward also took part in Operation Exodus and a Cooks Tour. Ward's log book also records his time spent in a Link Trainer and his time at the controls of an aircraft. After the war he joined the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and flew in Auster aircraft as an air observation post with pilot Captain Huggins.</p>

Listed at the back are all the stations he was posted to: RAF Wilmslow, RAF Dalcross, RAF Sywell, RAF Clyffe Pyard, RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Elgin, RAF Acaster Malbis, RAF Langar, RAF Syerston, RAF Balderton, RAF Strubby, RAF Graveley, RAF Little Staughton, RAF Wyton, RAF Bruntingthorpe and RAF Annan. Aircraft flown were Wellington, Tiger Moth, Halifax and Lancaster. With 227 Squadron he flew three night operations. Targets were Bohlen, Wesel and Lutzendorf. An Operation Exodus flight, an operation Post Mortem, and two Cook's Tours flights are also recorded. His pilots on his first operations were Flight Lieutenant Croker and Flying Officer Flying Officer Tate.

He was stationed at RAF Bruntingthorpe (29 OTU), RAF Swinderby (1660 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), and RAF Skellingthorpe (50 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster. Targets were not specified. He flew thirteen operations with 50 Squadron plus one Operation Exodus, one Operation Dodge and a trooping flight to Berlin. His pilot for a ‘second dickie’ operation was Flight Lieutenant Milne.

Ivor William Ernest Foster’s flying log book for air gunner
Flying log book for air gunner for I W E Foster, covering the period from 27 April 1944 to 3 August 1945. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and post war flying with 622 Squadron. He was stationed at RAF Bishops Court, RAF Husbands Bosworth, RAF Woolfox Lodge, RAF Feltwell, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Stradishall. Aircraft flown in were, Anson, Wellington, Flying Fortress and Lancaster. He flew a total of 21 operations with 186 Squadron, which included 4 Operation Exodus and one Operation Manna. Targets were, Wesel, Gelsenkirchen, Kamen, Cologne, Dortmund-Ems canal, Datteln, Kiel, Heligoland, Ravensburg, Bremen, Bad Oldloe, The Hague and Juvincourt. Two 'Cook's tours' flights are recorded. His pilot on operations was Pilot Officer Gray.

Extracts from log book from July 1944 on No 1 LFS and 625 Squadron on operations flying Lancasters and Oxfords on beam approach training, and then onto 156 Squadron in September 1944 until May 1945. There is also a summary of operations flown on 156 Squadron, a list of the stations he served at, a Tiger Moth endorsement and Link trainer sessions. His first or second pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Maxwell, Flight Lieutenant Marvin, Pilot Officer Kelsey, Pilot Officer Pollard and Flying Officer Lambert. Completed 60 Operations plus Operation Manna and Operation Exodus. Operations 4-18 missing from logbook. This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. Notes include references to a 1000 bomber operation, sight of a Lancaster being shot down, repatriating POWs. He was stationed at Belfast (Queens University Air Sqdn), RAF Cambridge (22 EFTS), Miami, Oklahoma, USA (3 BFTS), RAF Wolverhampton (28 EFTS), RAF Dallachy (14 (P)AFU), RAF Errol (1544 BAT Flt), RAF Lossiemouth (20 OTU), RAF Blyton (1662 HCU), RAF Ludford Magna (101 Sqdn), RAF Shawbury (EANS). Aircraft flown in were Tutor, DH 82, PT19, Harvard, Oxford, Wellington, Lancaster, York, Halifax. He flew 9 operations (two night-time, seven daylight) with 101 Squadron. Targets were Dessau, Kassel, Essen, Dortmund, Paderborn, Hamburg, Heligoland, Bremen, Berchtesgaden. He also flew Operation Manna, described as 'Spam dropping', Operation Exodus and Operation Dodge flights. One Cook's Tour flight was made, described as Continental SS XC (sight seeing cross country).

Based at RAF Penrhos (No.9 (O)AFU), RAF Little Horwood and RAF Wing (26 OTU), RAF Stradishall (1657 Conversion Unit), RAF Methwold (149 and 218 Squadrons), RAF Feltwell (No.3 Lancaster Finishing School), RAF Wratting Common (1651 Conversion Unit), RAF Mepal (75 (NZ) Squadron and 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron), RAF Mildenhall (44 (Rhodesia) Squadron), RAF Leconfield (Central Gunnery School), RAF North Luffenham (1653 Heavy Conversion Unit), RAF Lindholme (230 Operational Conversion Unit), RAF Waddington and RAF Binbrook (50 Squadron), RAF Shallufa and RAF Hemswell (83 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster, Lincoln. Also Meteor and Dakota as a passenger. Records a total of 33 operations, sometimes only as “Special Op” with no target named. Recorded targets in France, Germany, Netherlands and Norway are: Alençon, Brest, Cologne, Dessau, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Gladbach, Hamm, Kiel, Krefeld, La Rochelle, Langendreer, Morlaix, Oslo, Regensburg, The Hague and Wesel. His pilots on operations were Squadron Leader Hutchins, Flight Sergeant Holmes, Flying Officer Murley, Flying Officer Martin, Flying Officer Baker and Squadron Leader McKenna DFC.
