MATTERS OF MOMENT
[photograph]
SECOND “D” DAY. – A formation of Douglas Skytrains or Skytroopers unloading their human cargo over the east bank of the Rhine on March 24. A greater force of airborne and glider-borne troops was used in this operation than on June 6, 1944, more than 40,000 men in all.
The R.A.F.’s 23rd Victoria Cross
THE VICTORIA CROSS has been awarded to an R.A.F. bomber pilot who had completed more than 100 missions and who was reported missing after a particularly hazardous daylight operation over the Rhineland city of Cologne last December. The award is to Acting Squadron Leader Robert Anthony Maurice Palmer, D.F.C. and Bar, No. 109 Bomber Squadron.
The citation states that Sqdn. Ldr. Palmer had completed 110 bombing operations. Most of them involved deep penetrations of heavily defended territory: many were low-level “marking” operations against vital targets; all were executed with tenacity, high courage and great accuracy. He first went on operations in January, 1941; he took part in the first 1,000-bomber raid against Cologne in 1942; and was one of the first pilots to drop a 4,000-lb bomb on German territory. Sqdn. Ldr. Palmer had a reputation of being able to press home his attacks and to bomb with outstanding accuracy. He was always selected, therefore, to take part in many special operations, such as pathfinding and “marking”. The action for which he was awarded Britain’s highest military honour was on December 23, 1944, when he led a formation of Avro Lancasters to attack the marshalling yards at Cologne in daylight. He had the task of marking the target, and his formation had been ordered to bomb as soon as the bombs had gone from his, the leading aeroplane. A few minutes before the formation started on its bombing run, an operation for which a steady flight is necessary for four or five minutes, the formation came under intense light and heavy anti-aircraft fire. Two motors of Sqdn. Ldr. Palmer’s Lancaster were set on fire and there were flames and smoke in the nose and in the bomb-bay. While the allied aeroplanes were making the bombing run many enemy fighters started to attack, but Sqdn. Ldr. Palmer did not take avoiding action. With much of his aeroplane damaged, he nevertheless made a perfect approach and his bombs hit the target.
The aeroplane was last seen spiralling to earth in flames. During this operation more than half of the Lancaster formation failed to return. Sqdn. Ldr. Palmer was an outstanding pilot displaying conspicuous bravery on all occasions. His record of prolonged and heroic endeavour is beyond praise. Sqdn. Ldr. Palmer was born on July 7, 1920. His home is at Gravesend, where he was educated at Gordon School and Gravesend County School. Before the War he was in the office of the Gravesend Borough Engineer. Enlisting in 1939 as air-crew he was commissioned in 1942. He was mentioned in despatches during January, 1944, was awarded the D.F.C. on June 30, 1944, and the Bar to the D.F.C. on December 8, 1944.
The number of V.C.s awarded during the present War is now 134. Of these, 23 have been won by airmen – 18 of the R.A.F., two of the R.A.A.F., one of the R.C.A.F., and two of the R.N.Z.A.F.
The Second Phase
THE ENEMY appears to have reached the second phase in his new fighter policy. When some of his production facilities were turned over to the building of reaction-propelled fighters, his Fw 190 and Me 109 production inevitably dropped and he found himself unable to achieve sufficient defensive attacks against the U.S.A. 8th A.F. and R.A.F. Bomber Command daylight assaults. Also, his armies in East and West were crying out for fighter cover and, consequently, the costly attacks against the escorted Allied bombers almost ceased, the defence of the Reich being left to the A.A. units.
Then, late last year, small formations of enemy reaction-propelled fighters, mainly Me 262s with a few Me 163s began to appear. These fighters seldom attempted to attack our bombers and were soon conspicuous by their absence when Allied fighters appeared. Completely new combat tactics were having to be thought out for the new fighters, which were being flown by men unused to such speed as offered by the new types. The pilots were apparently under instructions not to attack, but merely to gain experience by shadowing the bomber formations.
Now the enemy has either decided that the time is ripe for attacks to begin or he has been put in such a position by the recent assaults on his tactical aerodromes that he is forced to come up and attack to save his defensive force from being destroyed on the ground. The first real effort was on March 18, when three Fortress groups in the Berlin area were attacked by formations of between six and 12 Me 262s. Again, on March 19, a bomber group was attacked by formations of Me 262s and, on Wednesday, March 21, a formation of Fortresses was attacked by a group of about 15 Me 262s. In all the combats on Wednesday, 12 Me 262s were shot down (three by the bombers and nine by Mustangs) and nine bombers and 19 fighters were lost. These losses are not in excess of those which have been suffered normally at the hands of enemy flak during the past “fighter-free” months, and the losses of the enemy are out of all proportion to his achievement. The use of formations of jet-propelled fighters is significant in that it shows that the enemy considered he has evolved tactics for this new type. These formations are, however, as yet very small, but if the enemy can manage to bring sufficient numbers of Me 262s into action he may yet be able to achieve a measure of fighter defence over the Reich – for what it is worth to him now!
Whether the War in Europe will continue long enough to enable the enemy to progress to the third phase, the attack on our rear areas, and possibly on this country, by jet-propelled aircraft remains to be seen. Newer types of “jets”, including the Arado 234, will almost certainly not have reached a sufficient stage of development to participate in either of these phases.

MARCH 30, 1945 357 THE AEROPLANE
Hydraulics for Aircraft
MR. R.H. BOUND, F.R.Ae.S., F.S.E., M.I.M.E., A.M.I.A., speaking before members of the Royal Aeronautical Society on March 22, reviewed the four means of operating aircraft power services –pneumatic, mechanical, hydraulic and electric.
The aero-motor, he pointed out, is a high-speed unit, but the aircraft services are operated comparatively slowly. An undercarriage which completes an angular movement of approximately 90 degrees in nine seconds has a mean speed of three r.p.m. compared with the motor speed of about 3,000 r.p.m. Pneumatic systems cannot compete with hydraulic power to meet heavy loading, as air compressors cannot generate pressure approaching those of hydraulic pumps which can operate at 3,000 lb per sq. in. The use of pneumatics would demand heavier equipment. Pneumatics, however, can be used for bomb doors and wheel brakes.
Mechanical operation can be achieved by rods or flexible shaft drives but the practical difficulties are considerable and the reduction gearing is complicated and heavy. Actuators form the largest engineering bulk, representing about 50 per cent. of the complete system weight. The simplicity of the hydraulic jack is such that it can be produced for a fraction of the cost of the electrical unit with its motor, clutch brake, limit switches, gearbox, etc.
Gravity lowering gear for undercarriages is unsatisfactory. Hydraulic action can provide an emergency system, using compressed air or a slow-burning cartridge.
Mr. Bound said he did not believe it economic to operate every service on an aeroplane by one power source. Electric power can operate some services, hydraulic others and pneumatic others.
In comparing hydraulics with electric actuation, the electro-hydraulic systems must be considered. Electric control of hydraulic services takes advantages of both systems. Hydraulic power is the simplest means for obtaining linear travel, and the standard aircraft low-voltage electric system can be used for valve operation through the medium of solenoids. In this arrangement hydraulic units can be closely grouped, considerably reducing the length of pipes. Control valves are near the actuators and pipelines in the cockpit are eliminated.
The design of hydraulics, explained Mr. Bound, requires careful study to ensure neat piping runs. As a rule, piping connections should be confined to one or two sides of a component which permits latitude in mounting the unit. Temperature has to be carefully studied. Cavitation due to reduction on barometric pressure affects pump efficiency, giving rise to reduced and erratic delivery with considerable noise and vibrations.
Two means can counter this. A closed or pressurized system having capacity to absorb the maximum displacement and strong enough to maintain ground-level internal pressure when outside pressure falls with altitude, and a reservoir with submerged pump.
Height introduces problems of starvation in the suction lines. Increasing the rotational speed raises the power output without increasing the size and weight of the pump. A pump which operates satisfactorily at high speeds gives an equally good performance at high altitudes. Considerable improvements can be made at high altitudes and high r.p.m. if careful consideration be given to certain points. Pumps should be primed during suction, using the centrifugal force available due to rotary movement; sudden changes in direction of flow and any factors tending to increase turbulence in the suction passage should be avoided; the suction port should be as large as possible; the suction period should be increased at the expense, if necessary, of the delivery period, in the case of a piston pump, where the suction and delivery stroke occupy one revolution; by suitable design of the piston-actuating mechanism, a large ratio between the suction and delivery strokes can be attained.
Finally, Mr. Bound considered future developments. Hydraulic control and actuation of reversible pitch airscrews offers scope for development. Interest is being shown in pre-rotation of wheels before landing, and hydraulic motors could provide the power.
Oddentification – CCIII
MR. F.G. MILES has sent us the following correction to a rhyme under Wren’s Oddentity in THE AEROPLANE for March 16:–
I like your drawings and fancy styles –
I’m glad you like the aeroplanes by Miles –
I’m proud and flattered that you should be ready
To attribute thus the Mercury to “Freddie”:
Alas! Though praise is good, the truth is finer,
In this case brother George was the designer.

NUREMBERG WAS ‘LAID FLAT’ [inserted] No 9 27/8 1943 [/inserted]
[boxed] ‘German [missing word] H.Q. [/boxed]
Few towns, even in Germany, can ever have received so shattering a blow in 40 minutes as medieval Nuremberg, the Bavarian “holy city” of the Nazi Party, which was the target of the vast armada of bombers that roared for more than an hour over South-East England late on Friday.
The result was summed up in one pregnant sentence by a rear-gunner on his return. He said: “ I reckon we knocked the whole place flat.” Here is the story of this great raid as told to the Sunday Express by the men who made it.
‘We’ve finished the job properly’
By EDWARD J. HART, [italics] Sunday Express Air Reporter [/italics]
A Lancaster Bomber Station, Saturday.
NUREMBERG, centre of some of Germany’s most vital war industries, was a seething bonfire when our very strong force of four engine bombers left the scene. Crews returning at dawn brought glowing descriptions of the effects of their heavy bombs and incendiaries.
[2 maps]
[italics] “The searchlights be[missing letter]ween Mannheim and Frankfort were five-deep in a continuous be[missing letter]t – just like a flare-path,” said the skipper of “ R for Robert,” back [missing letter]rom Nuremberg. “Anybody caught by them would have a job to get out.” [/italics]
A solid red core of leaping flames, with columns of jet black smoke billowing up to 15,000 feet and visible 150 miles away, was the word picture painted for me by Flight-Sergeant John Crabb, of Glasgow, navigator of “S for Sugar,” making his twenty-second raid on Germany.
“I never imagined a town could burn like that,” declared the rear gunner of “A for Apple,” Sergeant Harry Smith, a Cardiff man, on his 37th raid.
Weather conditions were very favourable for the raiders. They had clear skies all the way and excellent visibility over the target.
Packed area
Despite an exceptionally large force of enemy night fighters, the attack was completed to schedule.
It lasted from 12.30 a.m. till 1.12 a.m. Lancasters, Stirlings and Halifaxes took part in it.
IN 42 MINUTES OVER THE TARGET THEY DROPPED ABOUT 1,500 TONS.
“I reckon we knocked the whole place flat,” said Sergeant Fred Lamble, of Leeds, rear gunner in “C for Charlie.” It was his 19th operation. “We’ve finished the job properly,” he added. “There’ll be no more Brownshirt parties in that part of Germany.”
Lamble seems to have had a thoroughly enjoyable night. “We had our first bit of fun about ten miles inside France on the way in,” he said.
“Illuminations”
“It would have done your heart good to see our fighters – bags of them – banging away at locomotives; pumping in their tracer bullets against a vivid background of blue searchlights. It reminded you of the illuminations in Blackpool – lovely to look at.”
NUREMBERG, HE SAID, WAS A GOOD RUNNER-UP TO BERLIN. ITS FIGHTER DEFENCES WERE HEAVIER THAN BERLIN AND COMPARABLE WITH PEENEMUNDE.
“With plenty of fire, smoke, flak and searchlights it was everything you could wish for,” he commented.
Only one thing marred his joy. In vicil [sic] life he was a concert singer. Over the target he had promised the crew the baritone solo of the Prize Song of “The Meistersingers of Nuremberg” but just as he started the intercom system failed.
Fierce combats
Lamble refuses to believe it was accidental.
Other crews brought back stories of fierce combats with night fighters. Gunners of “D for Donald” had two encounters.
Mid upper gunner Sergeant Harry Wilkins, a former municipal clerk at Hull, said a Ju.88 passed just above him while they were making their bombing run. He fired at it, but did not see the result.
His skipper, Flight-Lieut. Robert Munro, a New Zealand farmer on his 65th operation, told me: “I’ve

never seen so many fighters in South Germany before.”
Sergeant William Walton, of Perth, rear-gunner of “J for Johnnie,” damaged an Me.109 just north of Nuremberg.
“I saw him coming in on the port quarter about 500 yards away and gave him a five-second burst,” said Walton.
Captain of “J for Johnnie,” Flying Officer Bruce Smeaton, of Manchester, who left school to join the R.A.F., reported a heavy concentration of searchlights.
“They nearly caught us going in and coming out,” he said. This was his eighteenth trip. He was in the Berlin raid.
Flying Officer Kenneth Coates, skipper of “R for Robert,” said the searchlights were five deep in a continuous belt – just like a flare path. “Anybody caught by them would have a job to get out,” he told me.
Flight Lieutenant Gobbie, who took part in a previous raid on Nuremberg, is also of the opinion that the old town has really “had it” this time.
Several crews saw friendly torches winking at them as they passed over France. They agreed that London’s black-out last night was far from good.
“It shook me rather badly,” one officer said.
One of the Lancaster squadrons taking part in last night’s raid was the first to drop bombs on a German target in this war. On September 4, 1939, six of its Hampden light bombers attacked the naval installations at Brunsbuttel.
Lights full on
The Squadron’s commander, Wing-Commander P.W. Johnson, A.F.C., gave me this summary of the Nuremberg raid:-
“I would definitely assess it as a major success. Nuremberg is a difficult target to find. It was very heavily bombed, and fires were started on the best and brightest scale. There is no doubt that the enemy night fighter effort has increased tremendously in recent weeks, but our defence against it is improving all the time.”
The station senior intelligence officer adds this footnote:-
“It was a very successful attack with well concentrated fires. Our crews encountered hundreds of fighters, many of them with navigation lights full on. This is quite a new departure. I cannot attempt to explain it. It makes an obvious target for our boys, but it may be intended as a decoy.”
IT IS OFFICIALLY STATED THAT 33 BOMBERS ARE MISSING FROM THE RAID – A SATISFACTORY PROPORTION CONSIDERING THE SIZE OF THE OPERATION. THE GERMANS, CLEARLY AS PROPAGANDA, CLAIM THAT 62 WERE SHOT DOWN AND SAY THAT “THIS WAS PROBABLY ONE-QUARTER OF THE WHOLE FORCE.”
The enemy communiqué describing the raid rather contradicts this by describing it as “a terror attack by strong British formations,” and says that it caused casualties among the population and heavy destruction in residential areas.
The German radio added: “Irreplaceable historical monuments of cultural value, including some parts of the Old Town Wall, and numerous churches fell victims to the high-explosives of the terror planes.”

200-hour blaze
It is in the interests of the enemy to howl that their chief port has become a dead city, which is no longer worth attacking. This explains the Nazi-inspired stories of more than 30,000 casualties before Monday night's attack.
But there is little doubt about the fact that Hamburg has been burning or smouldering for more than 200 hours, for when our crews reached their target in their fourth big raid they testified to seeing fires still burning before they had dropped their loads of high-explosives and incendiaries.
These fires had been observed to be flourishing also on Sunday, 60 hours after the third heavy night assault. The great clouds of smoke had blown away, and it was at last possible for the photographic interpretation departments to make a detailed assessment of the damage.
It will be a long time before this is finished and a full count made of all the industrial damage. But it is already known that many important factories, in addition to those previously announced, have been hit and severely damaged.
A violent thunderstorm was going on in the upper air while our bombers were attacking Hamburg on Monday night.
Pilots said it was impossible to tell which was flak and which was lightning. Blue electric flames played round the gun barrels and the propeller tips of

many of the machines. Over the target city there were gaps in the clouds and it was through these that our men saw the fires. Some went below the clouds to less than 10,000 feet to bomb. A Lancaster captain, who went very low, clearly identified the docks of Hamburg and reports fires spreading in the area. Great quantities of bombs were dropped on these fires.
Flak and searchlights were hampered by the weather. But the night fighters drove through the storm to intercept. One Halifax, attacked four times by a Messerschmitt 109, and twice by a Junkers 88, outmanoeuvred both fighters and came through to make a happy landing.
Despite the foul weather the crews on their return were satisfied that they had delivered another tremendous blow in this great experimental battle.
In their attack on July 29-30 their bombs were directed on the north-east and south-east areas of the German city. Previously they had caused great damage to the central and dock quarters, particularly in the Grasbrook, Billwader, Ausschlag, and St Georg districts.
A FULL PATTERN
So it is clear that each visit by the R.A.F. is directed at knocking out great sections, making a full pattern that will have no industrial part immune from devastation.
There may be still big areas to be dealt with, for the waterways in the town occupy some 10,000 acres, and there are 22 miles of quays for sea-going ships, and 110 miles of docks and landing stages.
The dock area is a labyrinth of oil refineries, flour mills, oil-seed crushing mills, margarine factories, and warehouses, in addition to the submarine building plants, where a third of all the U-boats were constructed.
It is eloquent of the strength of Bomber Command that while the Hamburg battle is being fought in these great night actions, a great force of planes could be spared for a raid on Remscheid, a town less than a tenth of the size of the major target.
Photographs of the damage caused by the Remscheid attack on Friday night last make a picture of great devastation.
A high proportion of the damage is among the industrial plants in this important steel and engineering centre on the outskirts of the Ruhr. The main railway station and the main post office have also been hit.
But the world's eyes are on Hamburg, where, stated the Air Ministry last night, a battle is being fought greater even in intensity and ferocity than the battle of the Ruhr.

MORE TWO-WAY BLOWS ON GERMANY
R.A.F. DOUBLE ATTACK ON SCHWEINFURT
REGENSBURG PLANE WORKS DEVASTATED
BIG BRITISH FORCES OUT LAST NIGHT
The great R.A.F. and United States non-stop effort to crush Germany's air strength rose to a new height yesterday when massive forces of American heavy bombers from both Britain and Italy blasted Regensburg, in Bavaria, in the third two-way assault in four days.
Berlin Radio reported that a fourth double attack was in progress last night when it announced violent combats over Germany's southern and western frontiers between night-fighters and British raiders.
This followed closely on big night activities by more than 1,000 R.A.F. bombers. Most of these concentrated on two shattering blows – new tactics against Schweinfurt, in Bavaria, most vital bottleneck of the German arms industry, which had already been battered by day a few hours earlier by American heavy bombers from this country.
Thirty-five R.A.F. bombers are missing from the night's operations, which included attacks on objectives in North-West Germany and the completion of a very extensive mine-laying programme. Intruder patrols, from which one aircraft is missing, destroyed three enemy aircraft.
Last night two big forces of R.A.F. heavy bombers crossed the East and South-East Coast heading for the Continent. Later an alert was sounded in Western Switzerland.
Describing yesterday's operations, United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe said:
"Strong forces of heavy bombers of the Eighth A.A.F., escorted by A.A.F. and R.A.F. fighters, to-day attacked aircraft works at Regensburg, ball-bearing works at Stuttgart and other targets in South-West Germany.
[page break]
"The 15th A.A.F. from Italy joined in the attack on Regensburg. The escorting fighters shot down 27 enemy aircraft, three of our fighters were lost Thirty-one of the 8th A.A.F. bombers are missing."
The destruction of more than 25 German planes of more than 100 which attacked the bomber fleets from Italy was claimed in incomplete reports.
At Regensburg two plane plants were the objective: one at Prufening, making component parts, another at Obertraubling, assembling ME 109s. The latter was raided last Tuesday by the largest force ever sent out by the Mediterranean Allied air forces against a single target.
Photographs developed as soon as the British-based bombers got back from Regensburg showed that the target had been devastated.
Regensburg ranks among the main centres of enemy fighter production. Crews said they left columns of black smoke rising 10000ft high from the plane factories and flames that could be seen 35 miles away.
GUIDED BY FIRES
R.A.F.s Changed Tactics
The R.A.F., in making their first visit to Schweinfurt on Thursday night, departed from their usual tactics of one big cascade bombing on a target in one night.
Fires started on Wednesday by the United States Eighth Army Air Force were still burning on the arrival of our first force. The target was effectively marked and by the end of the second attack a large conflagration was seen, with smoke rising to a great height.
Hundreds of Lancasters and Halifaxes, by far the greater part of the force of well over 1,000 aircraft despatched on Thursday night, made two separate attacks at an interval of two hours. In the force were many Canadian and Australian crews.
The enemy began to lay fighter flares during the first attack which began at five minutes past eleven, but not a single flare was seen during the second attack. Zero hour for this was at five minutes past one.
Within a few minutes of zero hour an effective concentration of markers was laid. Great numbers of H.E. and incendiary bombs were dropped, and clouds of black smoke began to rise.
The fires were still burning to guide the second force, but again the target indicators were laid. There was much smoke over the target and the markers were needed.
The fires were rapidly extending and the smoke now rose to a great height.
The ground defences were strong initially, especially at the beginning of the first attack, but their efficiency decreased under the weight of bombing.
"The 50 or 60 searchlights around the town were standing aimlessly up on end," said a pilot in the first force.
When the second attack began the searchlights were again forming a ring and another strong barrage was put up, but once again bombing disorganised the ground crews and prevented any effective co-operation.
Some crews reported that they saw fires still burning in Stuttgart, last attacked on Sunday night.
There was better weather on Thursday night over a great part of South-West Germany than there has been in some weeks. The skies were clear and visibility very good.
With the defences in this part of Germany not so strong as around Berlin, cloud cover is less essential.
"The sky was perfectly clear all the way to the target," said a Lancaster squadron commander in the first force.
"Though there was no moon, there was brilliant starlight, and as we flew over the Continent we could see that the ground was snow-covered all the way. It was dazzlingly white round Schweinfurt."
Though a town of no more than 60,000 inhabitants, Schweinfurt is considered by the economic experts who advise in the choice of targets as the most important industrial centre of its kind in Germany or German-occupied Europe and probably the most vital bottleneck in the whole of the enemy's armament industry.
This is because its main factories used to produce about 50 per cent. of the total production of ball and roller bearings of all types available to the Axis.
Every branch of industry supplying the armed forces requires a large supply of bearings. All modern machines made for high performance would be useless without them.
The seven ball-bearing plants in Schweinfurt had a pay-roll of more than 20,000 – one third of the town's population. In scarcely any one other industry in any other town in Germany is there a higher proportion of industrial workers to the whole population.
Throughout yesterday aircraft of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force carried out a series of attacks on enemy-occupied territory. Marauder medium bombers of the United States Ninth Air Force attacked the airfield at Gilze-Rijen, Deelen, and Leeuwarden, in Holland. St. Trond, in Belgium, and military objectives in Northern France.
R.A.F., Dominion, and Allied Boston, Mitchell, and Mosquito bombers and Typhoon fighter-bombers of the Second Tactical Air Force attacked military objectives in Northern France.
The Marauders were escorted and covered by R.A.F., Dominion, and Allied Spitfires, and the Bostons, Mitchells, Mosquitoes, and Typhoons by R.A.F. Typhoon fighters.
From all these operations one Mosquito is missing, says a joint Air Ministry and American H.Q. communique.
For the first time this month the Marauders and their R.A.F., Dominion and Allied fighter escorts ran into determined fighter opposition. Four medium bombers and one fighter failed to return.
A medium-sized enemy merchant vessel was hit by a torpedo off the Norwegian coast during the hours of darkness early yesterday morning by a Beaufighter from a New Zealand squadron of Coastal Command, states the Air Ministry.
The attack took the enemy by surprise, and a huge orange explosion was seen on the merchant vessel, followed by a fire on the port bow.

At 2155 hours, immediately after dropping its bombs our aircraft was caught in S/L’s and engaged by heavy and accurate flak. Height was then approx. 10,000 feet, Violent evasive action was being taken, when our rear gunner sighted a single engine enemy aircraft, identified as an ME 109 approaching from the starboard quarter, up at a range of 400 years. Our aircraft immediately turned into the attack, the rear gunner delivering a two second burst. The enemy aircraft which did not open fire, broke away as soon as we open fired and disappeared to the Port quarter. No result of our fire was observed. Our aircraft was held in S/L’s and engaged in flak throughout this engagement. Subsequently being forced down to a height of 3,000 feet before leaving the Target area, where F/S Page was successful in shooting out several S/L’s. One master light which he destroyed blew up with a vivid blue flash. Our aircraft did not suffer any damage during the two fighter attacks but was subsequently damaged by flak.
