[underlined] GENERAL [/underlined]
a) With zero hour at 0100 hrs., a total of 751 aircraft, 12 of which are missing, took off to attack HAMBURG in six phases between 0102 hrs. and 0150 hrs., subsequent to target marking by aircraft of P.F.F. This was to consist of white illuminating flares and yellow target indicator markers for P.F.F. use only and followed by red T.I. markers backed up by green T.I. markers. Main force aircraft were to aim at the red T.I.s if visible, otherwise at the centre of the pattern of the green T.I.s, both of which cascade to the ground from between 3,000/10,000 ft. Our aircraft was included in the first phase from zero plus 2 to zero plus 10.
b) Route ordered was:-
Base – Mablethorpe – 5445N 0700E – 5355N 0945E – Target – 5315N 1000E – 5430N 0603E – Base.
Yellow route markers were dropped by P.F.F. aircraft on the way in at 5411N 0850E and on the way out at 5343N 0850E and on the way out at 5343N 0836E.
c) Weather:-
Weather on the route was good with up to 9/10 low stratus cloud East of about 4⁰E which cleared after crossing the enemy coast. Visibility over land was good with slight haze in the target area, which did not prevent many aircraft seeing ground detail. A half moon was starting to rise when approaching the target. Up to 6/10 low stratus cloud was again met after re-crossing the enemy coast up to about 4⁰E.
+ d) For the purpose of neutralising enemy R.D.F. equipments, all aircraft carried specially + designed bundles of metalised paper, one of which was to be thrown out at one minute
+ intervals from the first turning point on the route in until the turning point at 5430N 0603E. This + was the first occasion on which this had been put into operation.

[underlined] NARRATIVE [/underlined]
1. We took off at 22.00 hrs. from Elsham Wolds and after gaining some height over base, set course for MABLETHHORPE at 2251 hrs., height 11,000 ft., and thereafter gaining height up to about 20,000 ft. at the first turning point. Shortly after this, as we were some three minutes before E.T.A., an orbit was made and indicated speed reduced from 145 to 140 m.p.h.
2. Before seeing the yellow route markers at the enemy coast, slight H.A.A. was seen to starboard, probably from HELIGOLAND. We crossed the coast which was not visible, soon after the yellow markers appeared, leaving them just to starboard at

0044 hrs. At about this time searchlight activity in the BRUNSBUTTEL area could be seen, in which about twelve searchlights eventually formed a well-shaped cone into the apex of which slight H.A.A. from 3-4 gunsites was fired together with spasmodic L.A.A. from about three scattered guns firing green tracer. Another cone of searchlights could also be seen further off and probably around CUXHAVEN.
3. About this time also a large number of searchlights could be seen in the distance ahead and over HAMBURG with a group of searchlights on our port beam, probably over NEUMINSTER or KIEL. Only 2-3 searchlights were met in the KIEL CANAL area, but these gave no trouble, and there was no suggestion of any concentration here.
4. After passing this area, as no illuminating flares or yellow T.Is had yet been dropped over the target, it was again decided to make an orbit, which was carried out without incident in spite of the concentration of aircraft. When completed, the flares and markers were seen going down. Two incendiary patches were also seen to starboard; these had either been jettisoned or marked the site of a dummy.
5. The layout of the searchlights of HAMBURG appeared in general to be in greatest strength to the W. and N.W., N.E. and E., S.E. and S.W., with comparatively few to the N. and S., which areas lay on our track, thus leaving a fairly free gap along the N – S axis of the target area. There were at no time more than four groups of searchlights working together, one in each of the above areas and about 100/125 in all. The most effective and well formed cone, in which I counted 26 beams, although there may have been a few more on the Southern side, was in the W. and N.W. area. This first engaged its target well to the West of the city, following it in towards the centre, and it was noticeable that the most Westerly beams depressed finally to the low angle of about 20⁰, at which they appeared to remain exposed for longer than is normal. A moderate amount of H.A.A. fire at predictor control “seen” appeared in and around the apex some 30 seconds after the cone was formed, much of the fire being buried behind the target, which, however, was not visible from our aircraft.
6. At the same time the N.E. – E. layout appeared to have difficulty in forming a good cone, although again 25/30 beams were involved. This did not prevent H.A.A. guns engaging in salvoes of not more than 4 on a moderate and haphazard scale. It is doubtful if there was much accuracy and I formed the opinion that the method employed was predictor control “unseen” with the target to be engaged being roughly indicated by the searchlight formation and, apart from the cone on the Western side of the target, this applied to the H.A.A. fire in the areas of the ill-formed cones seen, none of which appeared to illuminate a target. Rate of fire seemed generally slow and not above 10 r.p.m. and rather irregular, with shells bursting between 18,000ft. and 22,000 ft. but mainly at the lower levels.
7. A bombing run of about 2 minutes was made on heading 170⁰, height 21,000 ft., I.A.S. 150 m.p.h. with wind speed 9 m.p.h. from S., giving Ground Speed of about 200 m.p.h. and with red T.I. marker in the bombsight, bombs were dropped off at 0111 hrs. During the crossing of the target, ¾ searchlights were moving slowly as if trying to make contact with us or other aircraft, two or three of which could be seen below us, but the task seemed beyond them, although no appreciable evasive action was taken.
8. The point of greatest interest was the appearance of the H.A.A. bursts seen in the target area, all of which were of the same type and which had been described to me by crews attacking this target about nine months ago. Observed from a distance the individual burst can best be described as a much less obvious flash than normal which expanded as a ring of luminous particles visible for ¾ to 1 second leaving the centre of the ring blank as would occur if, when dropping a stone into water, a single ripple moved away concentrically from the point of impact, leaving the water undisturbed behind it. It seems that when the line of flight of the shell is towards or away from the observer, the ring is quite circular; if the line of flight is oblique to the line of flight to the observer’s line of sight, the ring appears as oval, and if at right angles to the line of sight, the ring appears as oval, and if at right angles to the line of sight, the luminous particles appear to expand in a straight line for an equal distance either side of the point of burst and varying between vertical and horizontal, as a ring would appear edge-on to the observer
/Cont.
[page break]
-3 -
When close to and over the target area, the form of the bursts could be seen clearly and appeared like a widespread shuttlecock which spread out concentrically to the point of burst with a forward movement conforming to the direction of the line of flight. The angle of spread was between 90⁰ and 135⁰.
9. At no time in the target area, or elsewhere, were we picked up by searchlights or engaged by H.A.A. defences; no other aircraft were seen illuminated and no L.A.A. was in action in the target area.
10. At 0109 hrs., when running up to bomb, a large red-orange fire sprang up and lasted for about 30 seconds before dying down; this was in the centre of the town. On leaving the target many fires were starting and a heavy bank of black smoke was rising on the Southern side, presumably from oil fires. Glow from the target area could be seen from about 100 miles away.
11. After altering course at the turning point S. of HAMBURG a fire on the ground with much smoke was seen and was thought to be a crashed aircraft although none was seen shot down, nor were any combats or confirmed enemy aircraft seen throughout the flight. Shortly after this the River Elbe could be seen to starboard and the yellow route markers at 5343N 0836E about the same time. The ELBE was visible from the target area up to its mouth, but no searchlight or A.A. defences were in action. A few H.A.A. bursts of the normal type were seen between CUXHAVEN and BREMERHAVEN with some searchlight and H.A.A. activity in the latter area, and about 8 searchlights exposed at CUXHAVEN as we passed about 5 miles S., but these were trying to engage another aircraft at which some H.A.A. was fired at predictor control “unseen”.
12. Apart from a few H.A.A. rounds fired at another aircraft either from SCHARNHORN Is or perhaps ship-fired, as well as the dropping of many yellow flares over a period of about 30 minutes many miles S. of our track in the direction of the DUTCH FRISIAN Is, or coast, but with no other apparent activity, also observing a light flashed from sea level whish might have been an S.O.S., nothing further of interest occurred, and we landed at base at 0335 hrs.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
[underlined] CONCLUSION [/underlined]
1. There were no combats and only seven sightings of enemy aircraft of this Group, mostly at a distance from the observing aircraft, and this, together with the apparent inaccuracy and spasmodic nature of H.A.A. fire, as well as the very low percentage of losses, indicates that the counter R.D.F measure adopted was highly successful.
2. There no longer appears to be any searchlight concentration area on either side of the KIEL CANAL and the complete lack of defences along the River ELBE from the Western limits of HAMBURG – ALTONA G.D.A. suggests their removal. Although the ordered route was from 10 to 20 miles S. of the river, it would be unusual for all aircraft to be dead on track.
3. Searchlights in the target area were generally ineffective due to height of attack, concentration of aircraft in the area and smoke from fires and I.Bs. No conclusion can be drawn as to the method of control, but there was nothing to suggest that this was by means of radiolocation.
4. The slow and irregular rate of fire and scattered appearance of the salvoes of bursts did not indicate barrage fire in the early stages of the attack; the majority of guns were probably fired at predictor control “unseen” in the main, or “seen” when an occasional opportunity offered.
5. Although incandescent shell bursts, conforming to no particular shape, were seen as early as November 1942, the “incandescent ring burst” has never been reported outside HAMBURG. An explanation of this phenomenon may be that pellets of magnesium, or other luminous substance, are inserted outside of the
/Cont.

-4-
H.E. shell filling, and on the shell bursting, these continue on the line of the flight of the shell, being forced, owing to their position and probable light weight, towards the outside of the force burst and, therefore, appear in the shapes described in para. 8 of the Narrative. It may be due to the light weight that the spread of the incandescent particles is as much as 90⁰ to 135⁰. The object of this phenomenon appears to be purely deterrent although the possibility of an incendiary purpose cannot be excluded.
6. The majority of gunsites in the target area are 6-gun and there are at least 6 x 12-gun positions, but, unexpectedly, I did not see any indication of more that 4 guns being fired in salvo at any time. This suggests that F.M.G. (Radiolocation equipment) is deployed only down to 6-gun positions or greater, and that, owing to the technique being used by the attacking aircraft (see para. d above), 6 and 12 gun sites were unable to engage at “unseen” methods, and, in the confusion, even if helped by an indication from searchlights, they did not resort to barrage fire, the 4-gun sites alone engaging, albeit inaccurately, by such aid as could be obtained from searchlights or, possibly, S/Locs.

Pilot Officer Ernest Henry Tansley 149542 VR
Ernest Henry Tansley was born on 22 January 1914, West Ham, Essex. The middle son of Albert Edward and Mary Ann Tansley. Brothers - Albert Edward 1911 - 1992 and Frederick George 1915 - 2001. Ernest married Irene Florence England on 30 November 1935, in Thundersley, Essex. She was the daughter of Herbert Percy and Elizabeth Charlotte England, born on 24 July 1915, Thundersley. Children - Peter John 1936 - 2001, Anne Elizabeth 1940, Robert Ernest 1944. Ernest started work as a clerk for a Shipping Agency in London, later as a Foreman Stevedore at King George V Docks in London. When war broke out, he was one of the many dock workers who were transferred to Gourock Docks in Scotland. Being in a reserved occupation, Ernest was not required to enlist but he did so, at Edinburgh, on the 19th March 1941 to join the RAF. As a Volunteer Reservist, he was put on the reserve list and was eventually called up at the beginning of August. 4 August 1941 - joined No 1 Air Crew Reception Centre at St. John's Wood, London. 23 August 1941 - now as AC2 1345042, he moved to No. 4 Initial Training Wing at Paignton, Devon where he spent about eight weeks. 17 October 1941 - now an LAC he went to No. 18 Elementary Flying Training School at Fairoaks, Surrey. This was one of 12 schools controlled by 50 Group Pool and Ernest would have learnt to fly the Tiger Moth. After a short spell which included some embarkation leave, he arrived at Heaton Park Holding Centre in Manchester, awaiting news of his overseas posting to America. 21 November 1941 - Ernest's journey began by returning to Gourock Docks where he had previously worked and boarding the waiting troop ship which would take him to Canada to train under the Arnold Scheme. Firstly they disembarked at Halifax, Nova Scotia and then journeyed onwards to the Royal Canadian Airforce Station at Moncton, New Brunswick. 2 December 1941 is when they arrived at Moncton. 18 December 1941 - the long journey south had been made to Maxwell Field Airforce Base in Alabama where he stayed for about a month. 11 Jan 1942 - arrival at Carlstrom Field, Arcadia, Florida where he learnt to fly the Boeing Stearman bi-plane. This was the first of three flying schools for Primary, Basic and Advanced training. 29 March 1942 - arrival at Cochran Field, Macon, Georgia for the Basic training course. This was a U.S. Army Airforce School run along the very strict West Point system. Here Ernest would learn to fly the Vultee Valiant BT 13A mono plane. Because Ernest had been hospitalised on two occasions with the measles and then a septic arm, he was required to repeat the whole six week course.

5 July 1942 - this was the final Advanced training course at Moody Field, near Valdosta where they had the AT-6 Harvard and the twin-engined Curtiss AT-9 and Cessna AT-17. He graduated from here on 6 September 1942 when he received the coveted USAAC silver wings. As he was chosen to train as a Bomber pilot, he was to be sent back to the UK. He journeyed back to Moncton in Canada to receive his RAF wings and to await a ship for home. After several weeks wait, Ernest boarded the "Stirling Castle" and arrived back at Gourock Docks on 7th October 1942. Now a Sergeant Pilot, he was sent to No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre in Bournemouth and was able to meet up with his wife whom he hadn't seen for over a year. 3 November 1942 - now at Windrush in Oxfordshire, the home of No. 6 Pilots Advanced Flying Unit where he was trained to fly the twin-engined Airspeed Oxford. During Christmas week he was sent on a B.A.T. course at Bramcote near Birmingham to fly Fairey Battle aircraft. 2 March 1943 - left Windrush for No. 16 Operational Training Unit at Upper Heyford, still in Oxfordshire. On No.51 course he would have learned to fly his first twin-engined heavy aircraft, the Vickers Armstrong Wellington. Stationed here for about 12 weeks, Ernest would now have chosen the other members needed for his crew. After two weeks leave, this new crew met up on 28th May at 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit, Winthorpe in Nottinghamshire. This is where the Manchester, Sterling and Lancaster aircraft were based. The crew were in 'C' flight which was attached to R.A.F. Scampton in Lincolnshire. Their last training flight ended here on the 5th July and Ernest and crew were posted to 57 Squadron at Scampton on the 7th July 1943 after two long years of training. 12th July 1943 - this was Ernest's first taste of going on Ops as he accompanied Lieutenant Jack Russell, an American pilot, on a raid to Turin. He was flying as a second pilot and was allowed to fly the Lancaster, ED 655 on the homeward flight until they reached England. Landed at 08:49 on the 13th. 24th July 1943 - this was the first time Ernest experienced an operation with his own crew, flying in ED 655. It was the first of four raids on Hamburg code-named 'Operation Gomorrah'. 25th July 1943 - target Essen in the Ruhr. Take off 9:49pm, back at Base about 2am. ED 655 27th July 1943 - Hamburg again, taking off at 11pm and one of four planes landing back at Dunholme Lodge 4:20 am. ED655. 9th August 1943 - target Mannheim. Take-off 23:28 safely back at Base 05:32 on the 10th. ED655. 10th August 1943 - target Nuremberg. Take-off at 10pm returning at 05:35 on the 11th. This time flying in W4797. 12th August 1943 - target Milan, an eight and a half hour trip flying in W5008.
[page break]
15th August 1943 - back in ED655 the target was Milan again. They lifted off just before 20:30 and touched down 4:30 on the 16th. 17th August 1943 - this was the important raid on Peenemunde to attempt to destroy the experimental rocket site. No.5 Group, to which 57 squadron belonged, would be in the last wave with No.6 Group and would be in most danger as they would be flying time-and-distance bombing in bright moonlight. A total of 596 bombers took off; forty were shot down with a loss of 288 aircrew plus two more from Mosquitos. 245 of these young men were killed and 45 taken P.O.W. 5 and 6 Groups. as expected, suffered the most casualties losing six times as many men as the other groups. Taking off in ED 655 just before 10pm they returned safely to Scampton at 04:14 on the 18th. 22nd August 1943 - Leverkusen was the target this time. Take-off was at 9:35pm returning 4 hours and 50 mins later. 23rd August 1943 - after a short sleep, Ernest found they were on Battle Orders again that evening. This time the target was Berlin, his first time to the "Big City". Take-off was at 20:35, landing back at Scampton at 4am on the 24th. W4948 'S' - Sugar. 27th August 1943 - again in W4948 'S', target Nuremberg. Take-off shortly after 9pm landing back at Dunholme Lodge about 4am. It was at this time that the squadrons based at Scampton were moved in order that concrete runways could be laid down to replace the existing grass. 57 went to the newly built airfield called East Kirkby. On the 29th of August 1943, Ernest made the short flight in ED655 to their new home. 12th September 1943 - on this date Ernest returned to Scampton to attend Course No.1 for Newly Commissioned Pilots and back at East Kirkby, as it was the moon period when no operations were ordered, all aircrew personnel underwent a week long training programme. 22nd September 1943 - Hanover was the target and ED 655 took off at 19:08. They returned to base shortly after midnight, after having shot down a JU 88 and scaring off a second one. 27th September 1943 - Hanover was the target once again and in JA 872, take-off was at 7:45 pm and on the return, landed at Mepal at 01:25, because of bad weather. 28th September 1943 - the short flight was made back from Mepal. 29th September 1943 - set off to bomb Bochum but did not reach the main target. Returned three and a half hours later after bombing the last resort target ...Texel airfield. JA 872. 3rd October 1943 - the target was Kassel. Take off was at 6:45 in the evening and the crew returned safely five and a half hours later. ED 994 was used this time. 7th October 1943 - the target was Stuttgart and take off time was 8:19 in the evening in ED655. Returning at 3:35 on the morning of the 8th, there was another operation lined up for that night. 8th October - this was to Hanover in ED655 again. Taking off at 22:47, they returned safely to East Kirkby at 3:41 on the morning of the 9th.
[page break]
It was the 18th of October until another raid took place because it had been the moon period when no operations were carried out. The crew were on home leave during this time and Ernest had been taken ill. 3rd November 1943 - was the first operation of the month and the crew found themselves in possession of a new Mk. 111 Lancaster, JB 529 DX-W. The target was Dusseldorf and take-off from East Kirkby was 17:06, returning back at base at 21:24. 10th November 1943 - this time to bomb a railway junction set amongst the mountains in Modane. Take-off in JB 529was shortly after 9pm. 14th November 1943 - this was to be a dinghy search in JB 485 accompanied by one other aircraft. The search was for an American crew who had ditched in the sea but was, unfortunately, unsuccessful. After a three and a half hours search they were diverted to Manby, a gunnery training school as East Kirkby was fog bound. Returned to East Kirkby the following day. 18th November 1943 - this operation was to Berlin, the start of what was to be known as "The Battle of Berlin". JB 529 now bearing code letter DX-P took off at 17:25. This was a long eight hour trip. 26th November 1943 - this was to Berlin again and P-Peter took off at 5:10 pm. On return, they were diverted to Pocklington owing to bad weather at East Kirkby. They returned to East Kirkby two days later. Ernest wasn't needed to fly on another Op. until December. 2nd DECEMBER 1943. What a sad day this turned out to be.... Battle Orders once again showed the target to be Berlin. Ernest in JB 529 DX-P, and with an extra crew member on his first trip as a second pilot, was one of the first to take off at 16:19 and his estimated time of arrival should have made him the third to reach the target. Unfortunately, the aircraft met with unexpected winds en-route differing so much from those forecast that many planes were blown completely off course, ending up many miles off target. 650 aircraft should have been on this 'Maximum Effort' raid but 200 Halifaxes were withdrawn because of fog over their airfields in Yorkshire. After take-off, nearly a tenth of the remaining planes had to turn back when they encountered severe icing, technical problems or suffered crew sickness. This left just 415 to continue with the mission. Because the bomber stream was late arriving and was very scattered because the strong winds had blown them off course, there were many fighters waiting to pick them off. 'P' for Peter was shot down by a night-fighter at approximately 23:00 hours German time, over the small town of Trebbin about 25 miles south of Berlin. All eight crew were lost, even though Ernest stayed in his beloved Lancaster until the end trying to avoid a small row of houses and hoping his crew would have time to bail out. Although the houses were saved as Ernest managed to land in an adjacent field, the rear gunner had been shot and was still in the turret. Only one crew member had managed to open his parachute and Ernest, of course, was still in his seat.
[page break]
A gentleman who had witnessed the combat said that despite the loss of two thirds of the wing and engines, the flames emanating from the front of the aircraft and other serious damage to the fuselage caused by the explosion, the pilot was still clearly flying his crippled Lancaster in an effort to land in a nearby field. In his words “It was an aeronautical miracle”. A very sad end for eight young heroes who will always be remembered with pride.

[underlined]COMBAT REPORT [/underlined]
Lancaster x (ED. 655) of 57 Squadron over target on night 22/23rd September 1943 2142 hours at 18,000 feet. No moon, coned in about 25 searchlights over target, no other unusual phenomena. Monica gave warning of enemy aircraft just after bombs had been dropped and Lancaster was commencing to carry out banking search again. As enemy aircraft (identified as JU.88) came in to attack, searchlights went out. M.U. was first to see E/A on port quarter up approximately 300 yards. M.U. and R.G. simultaneously opened fire (firing 200 rds.) and hits were observed. E/A returned fire causing damage to Lancaster. E/A dropped starboard wing and dived to starboard leaving a smoke trail behind. When E/A was directly below Lancaster, flame was seen to emerge from starboard engine, but it was impossible to observe if E/A crashed, as another E/A then came in to attack from starboard quarter up. E/A (also identified as JU.88) came into attack at 600 yards range and R.G. opened fire (firing 50 rounds), but hits were not observed. E/A did not return fire. R.G. ordered the pilot to turn to starboard and dive, E/A broke away to starboard and was not seen again.
First E/A definitely claimed as destroyed.
M.U. could not get his guns to bear on second E/A.
Damage to Lancaster – Engine sub-frame Cat AC.

[underlined] NO. 427 SQUADRON FLIGHT ENGINEER SECTION [/underlined]
[underlined] DRILL FOR USE OF FUEL TANKS [/underlined]
It is essential that all fuel tanks in the Lancaster aircraft are tested within a short time after take_off, to see that fuel can be drawn from either the No. 1 or No. 2 tanks. To ensure that this is done the appropriate drill as set out below is to be carried out on all flights.
A. For No. 1 and No. 2 tanks in use.
B. For No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 tanks all full.
C. For No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 tanks, and the long range fuel tanks all full.
A. [underlined] With No. 1 and No. 2 tanks in use. [/underlined]
(No. 1 and No. 2 tanks need not necessarily be full.
1. [underlined] Take_off [/underlined]
(i) Selector cock on No. 2 tanks.
(ii) No. 1 and No. 2 pulsometer pumps ON.
(iii) If petrol failure occurs on take_off, the Flight Engineer immediately turns the selector cocks to No. 1 tank.
2. [underlined] When Airborne [/underlined]
At 2,000 feet switch off pulsometer pumps.
3. [underlined] In Flight [/underlined]
(i) When 120 gallons of fuel have been used from each No. 2 tank, Flight Engineer informs Captain and changes selector cocks from No. 2 to No. 1 tanks. (This will be approximately one hour after take_off.)
(ii) Fly on No. 1 tanks for one hour. Check that fuel is being used from No. 1 tanks by observing petrol gauge readings.
(iii) After one hour Flight Engineer informs Captain that fuel systom [sic] is correct and changes back to No. 2 tanks.
(iv) Continue to draw fuel from No. 2 tanks until each No. 2 tank has approximately 100 to 150 gallons left by the fuel gauge readings, when the Flight Engineer informs Captain and changes selector cocks back to No. 1 tanks.
(v) The 100_150 gallons left in the No. 2 tanks is only to be used for emergency.
B. [underlined] No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 tanks all full. [/underlined]
1 tanks.
2. [underlined] When airborne [/underlined]
At 2,000 feet, switch off pulsometer pumps.
3. [underlined] In Flight [/underlined]
(i) When 120 gallons of fuel have been sued from each No. 2 tank, Flight Engineer informs Captain and changes selector cocks from No. 2 to No. 1 tanks. (This will be approximately one hour after take_off.)
[page break]
_2_
(ii) Flight Engineer then switches on No. 3 tanks pulsometer pumps, transfers fuel from No. 3 tanks to No. 2 tanks. Flight Engineer checks that fuel is being transferred by watching No. 3 and No. 2 tank gauges. Flight Engineer also checks fuel is being used from No. 1 tank by checking gauges.
(iii) When No. 3 tanks are empty, switches off No. 3 pulsometer pump switches and changes selector cock from No. 1 to No. 2 tanks. Continue to use No. 2 tanks until 100 to 150 gallons are left in each No. 2 tank. When Flight Engineer informs Captain and switches selector cocks back to No. 1 tanks for the remainder of the flight.
(iv) The 100 to 150 gallons left in No. 2 tanks are only to be used in emergency.
C. [underlined] No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 tanks and the Long Range Fuel tanks. [/underlined]
1. [underlined] Take_off [/underlined]
(i) Selector cock on No. 2 tanks.
(ii) No. 1 and No. 2 pulsometer pumps ON.
(iii) All master fuel cocks on.
(iv) If petrol failure occurs on the take_off, the Flight Engineer immediately turns the selector cocks to No. 1 tank. Pilot makes immediate landing at his base after lightening the aircraft to 55,000 lbs.
2. [underlined] When Airborne [/underlined]
(i) At 2,000 feet switch off immersed fuel pumps.
(ii) After thirty minutes flight, change to No. 1 tanks.
(iii) When sufficient fuel has been sued from No. 1 tanks to equal the amount carried in the long range tanks (i.o., [sic] if the two tanks are fitted 400 gallons must be used from each No. 1; if one long range tank is fitted 200 gallons must be used from each No. 1 tank), then changes to No. 2 tanks.
(iv) Having changed to No. 2 tanks start pumping the contents of the long range tanks into the No. 1 tanks. The correct sequence of this is:-
(a) Turn on both long range fuel cocks situated behind the front spar.
(b) Switch on the pump switches and fuel contents gauges.
(c) When the pulsometer pumps are switched on the petrol immediately starts to flow into No. 1 tanks and it will take approximately 60 minutes to transfer the whole fuel load either the 400 or 800 gallons.
(d) During the pumping process a careful watch must be maintained on the fuel contents of gauges of No. 1 tanks to ensure that the petrol is being transferred evenly to both No. 1 tanks. In the event of one No. 1 tank being filled before the other the long range fuel tank cock to No. 1 tank that is filled first is to be turned off, thus allowing all the flow to go to the other No. 1 tank.
(v) While the fuel is being transferred from the long range tank of No. 1 tanks, the aircraft will be flying on its No. 2 tanks and as the fuel transfer will take at least 60 minutes the No. 2 tanks will be sufficiently emptied to allow for transfer of the No. 3 (Outer) tanks to the No. 2 tanks. Accordingly, as soon as the long range tanks are emptied the petrol is to be transferred in the normal manner from No. 3 to No. 2 tanks. This means that after the aircraft has been airborne from 5 to 5 1/2 hours the No. 1 tanks will be full and the No. 2 tanks will be topped up from the No. 3 tanks, i.e., after 5 1/2 hours the aircraft will have full No. 1 and No. 2 tanks.

[underlined] MARK VIII AUTO PILOT [/underlined]
[underlined] SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS [/underlined]
1. [underlined] Immediately prior to take-off, [/underlined] check that the clutch lever is in the “IN” position.
(a) Move the stick fore and aft, and the ailerons left and right to extremities of travel to ensure clutches are engaged.
(b) With engines running, and 60 lbs. per square inch on the pressure gauge, check that the control surfaces are free in “SPIN” and “OUT” positions of control cock.
(c) Return control cock to “OUT”
(d) Switch on D.R. Compass.
2. [underlined] ENGAGING THE CONTROLS [/underlined]
(a) As soon as convenient, after the take-off, set the control cock to “SPIN”. [underlined] After not less than 5 minutes [/underlined] with the cock in this position, the auto pilot is ready for use.
(b) Set the pitch control to the desired pitch attitude of the aircraft.
(c) Trim aircraft, “hands and feet off” at the desired airspeed and course. [underlined] Rudder trim is most important. [/underlined]
(d) Set the pointer of the pilot’s repeater parallel with the grid or lubber line.
(e) Set the “Control Switch” to “Compass”.
(f) Move the control cock to “IN”.
If it is found that a first cutting in the stick kicks back, subsequent engagement may be accomplished more comfortably as follows:-
Whie [sic] in “SPIN” and ready to engage, trime [sic] “Hands off” as before, and then put the aircraft into a shallow drive, [sic] then then case the stick back so that it is further back than its normal trimmed position, and cut “IN” as the aircraft reaches level.
If the kick was at first forward, climb the aircraft slightly and then ease the stick forward past its normal trimmed position, and cut “IN” as the aircraft reaches level.
The above must involve slow and small manoeuvres only.
If the aircraft does not fly laterally level, adjust rudder trim.
If left wing low, trim on left rudder.
If right wing low, trim on right rudder.
If the trim is adjusted in low wing swerve, the low wing will be depressed further.
[underlined] GENERAL OPERATIONS [/underlined]
(a) [underlined] Course-Changing, Slow [/underlined] Small changes of course may be made with the control switch at “Compass”, by resetting the pointer of the pilot’s repeaters.
(b) [underlined] Course-Changing, Fast [/underlined] Set the repeater pointer to the new course, and then turn the control switch to “jink”. A banked turn will develop. When the aircraft is about 10o short of the desired course, return the control switch to “compass”.
During a fast trim it will be necessary to keep the aircraft’s nose up, by adjustment of the pitch control, returning the control to its original setting as the turn comes off.
[underlined] CHANGE OF FORE AND AFT ATTITUDE [/underlined] The fore and aft attitude of the aircraft whilst under Auto Control [underlined] can only be altered by means of the pitch control. ON NO ACCOUNT IS THE MANUAL TRIMMER TO BE USED TO CHANGE ATTITUDE. [/underlined]
[underlined] IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO LANDING: [/underlined]
a) Control Cock to “OUT”
b) Control Switch to “OFF”
P.T.O.
[page break]
-2-
[underlined] VITAL PRECAUTIONS [/underlined]
1. Do not forget to check that slutches are engaged [underlined] before [/underlined] take-off.
2. Do not forget to allow 5 minutes in “SPIN”.
3. Do not disengage clutches in the air.
4. Do not use the manual elevator trimmer to change attitude. It may be used, however, to compensate for changes of trim by adjusting when the differentially operated pointer on the pressure gauge is flickering between the red and green section.

LUCKY ESCAPE – iii
One night on return – on the circuit we collided with another A/C on opposite direction – losing about 4-5 foot of the tip of main plane and nearly spun upside down – but recovered level flying – and landed – OK!!
On the night of July 24th in Lancaster VN-O. 50 Sqdn Skellingthorpe we were on route to Stuttgart when we were attacked by a german night fighter. Which shot away our bomb bay door. Damaged the starboard landing gear Fractured the main spar and put 5-6 cannon shells in the fuel tanks, on a 2nd attack the gunners shot the attacker down. We all agreed to carry on to the target, on arriving back at Base we were told to orbit until all the other A/C were down – On inspection we found that the cannon shells were still there. They were removed and were emptied. They were found to contain SAND instead of explosive – which saved all our lives. A very lucky escape. After a Belly Landing our first big escape.

[Underlined] LANCASTER B.III ED 945 [/underlined]
This aircraft was one of a batch of 620 ordered from A.V. Roe, Chadderton, Nr. Manchester in 1941 and built from November 1942 to June 1943. 129 with Nos. ED 303 to ED 782 were built as Mk Is fitted with R.R. Merlin 20 engines, and the remaining 491 were Mk IIIs fitted with Rolls Royce (Packard built) Merlin 28 engines, thus ED 783 to ED 999 and EE 105 to EE 202 were B.IIIs. Twenty of this particular batch with numbers either side of ED 932 (Gibson’s aircraft) were specially modified known as “Type 464 provisioning” to enable the special store, Barnes Wallis’ bomb, to be carried and released on the Dams raid. Completed in the late Spring of 1943, on the 9th June ED 945 was delivered to 103 Squadron stationed at Elsham Wolds, Barnetby, North Lincolnshire. 103 was in 1 Group Bomber Command, with Group Headquarters at Bawtry and th[deleted] e [/deleted] eir airfields grouped along the South bank of the Humber estuary.
When this aircraft was lost on the raid to Cologne on the night of 16/17 June 1943 it had logged 48 flying hours. This raid on Cologne comprised one of the actions during the Battle of the Ruhr 5/6 March 1943 to 28/29 June 1943. 26 major attacks were carried out during this period, the force generally comprising of 500 to 700 heavies. The target was marked by Oboe Mosquitoes of PFF dropping target indicators blind which were backed-up by ground markers dropped visually by PFF Lancasters. The aiming point was marked continuously throughout the attack during which time it was bombed by the Main Force: 1,3,4, 5 and 6 Groups.

Description
An account of the resource
93 items. The collection contains two oral history interviews with Jim Wright, letters, cuttings and photographs. It concerns James Roy Wright’s research into his father, Sergeant Arthur Charles Wright (1911 - 1943, 1149750 Royal Air Force) and an operation to Turin 12/13 July 1943 which caused 100 aircraft to violate Swiss airspace. Two aircraft were shot down or crashed in Switzerland. There are many photographs and details of the activities that night including reports by the Swiss authorities. The crews are identified with photographs and there are several photographs of the funerals at Vevey. Additional material includes aerial photograph of bomb damage in Germany and the logbook and airman's pay book of W G Anderson. <br /><br />The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Jim Wright and catalogued by Nigel Huckins, with descriptions of official Swiss documents provided Gilvray Williams. <br /><br />Additional information on Arthur Charles Wright is available via the <a href="https://internationalbcc.co.uk/losses/126015/">IBCC Losses Database</a>. This collection also contains items concerning Hugh Burke Bolger and his crew. Additional information on Hugh Burke Bolger is available via the <a href="https://internationalbcc.co.uk/losses/102186/">IBCC Losses Database</a>.

Operational Detail 12/13 July 1943.
Take-off Bottestford 12 July 1943 2248hrs. Target Turin. Successful
mission to target and returned towards home base.
On return Pilot informed control that he had sustained heavy Flak damage over target to the effect that he no Elevator control and that a large hole was in the tail section of fuselage. As an added extra he reported aircraft to be short on fuel and requested immediate let down.
Permission given to land and Pilot proceeded to make a very shallow approach to the field. I-le intended to lower undercarriage at the last moment to attempt to avoid the rear airframe from becoming to stressed.
Eyewitness on the ground reported as aircraft over flew him, he noticed that he could see daylight through the rear fuselage.
Pilot them lowered undercarriage and as the wheels locked down, the tail section separated from the main body and fluttered away. The forward section then reared up, stalled and came down into a Wheatfield approximately 1/4. mile from touch down. There were no survivors.
To the present day there is a patch on this field that will not grow any crop. Each time it is ploughed it generally gives up a little more of the debris.
Adjacent to this field there is a memorial plaque together with a tree in memory of those 7 aircrews.
Pilot Officer Chapman was engaged to member of the W.A.A.F, who was a member of the M.T. Section. She by name of Elizabeth was on duty that morning waiting with the crew Gharry awaiting the arrival of LM311.
Pilot Officer Chapman interred in the C.W.G.C at Botley Oxford. The rest of his crew were taken to their hometowns.
A report by C.Allen (within the folder) is disputed by the Brother of the Flight Engineer as well as the eyewitness on the ground as to the cause of the break-up of the aircraft.
From my own research I have not been able to locate any information as to a series of Lancaster's being checked for possible inferior rivets.
