JS: That’s good. This interview is being conducted for the International Bomber Command Centre. The interviewer is Jim Sheach. The interviewee is Horace Robertson. The interview is taking place at Horace’s home in [buzz] Edinburgh on the 23rd of August 2017. Could you tell me a little bit about your life before you joined the RAF?
HR: From when?
JS: From, from school?
HR: From school?
JS: Yeah.
HR: Well, I went to Broughton School. Yeah. Then I left at fourteen and joined my father who had a shoe repairing business and I worked for him until I was called up at nineteen and that was me in.
JS: And were you, when you were called up were you sent to the RAF or did you have a choice on where you went?
HR: We had a, had a wee exam which was really just adding. Could you add up this and add up that? It was more like the Air Force recruiting place and that was it. So just joined up then. That’s it, because at that time they didn’t call the night, when we were called up there was something about they didn’t want to cause any bother in Germany so they weren’t called soldiers, airmen or anything they were called, I can’t remember, a funny name. A very political sort of thing. You know. But we weren’t, weren’t called up as the Air Force or anything like that so I don’t know why. I read in the paper the other day about it and they had a fancy name for us and it wasn’t until the war was declared that’s when we came under the name like the Air Force. That’s right. Yeah.
JS: So where did you go first?
HR: Cardington. Basic training. Cardington. Yeah. Very good. There’s a photo there somewhere of me at Cardington. That’s right. So that, I went there for I can’t remember how long. We weren’t allowed out you know until we had done the basic training and we were called up. Sorry. Yeah. Then after that I went to Henlow on an electrician’s course. So that was going to be, of course the war wasn’t on then so it was supposed to be a three year course but of course, as soon as the war was declared that was scrapped and we were hustled right through, you know. So I become an electrician then after that and I mean there was no electricians at that time. They were all wireless or electric mechanics so we were the first lot of electricians to come out you know. That was it. Yeah.
JS: So, so what was expected that your role was going to be? What?
HR: Just electrician. That was all. We did, we did a course on electrics, motors and then you know wiring and it was like a college. We were at a college. That’s right. Yeah.
JS: So, which, which squadron did you go to first?
HR: I can’t remember the number but it was at Finningley at Doncaster. It was Hampdens there you know. Twin engine Hampden bombers. I think we had two. I think we had two bombers. I think that’s all we had. Yeah. And my job was to make sure the batteries were always charged up for the aircrew. They had an individual one for their stuff and they all had to have them always charged up every day. So that’s all I was there. For that. And my uniform lasted just a few months and it just crumbled away with the acid. Fumes off the acid you know. So I was only there a few months and then I was posted to Hereford on another course. Electrician 2s course. So that was that. So I went there and I passed out there. Got my electrician 2 and then I was posted to Newcastle and it was a wee bit of grass and a wooden hut and that’s all it was there. So it was 83 MU and it was a Salvage Unit so we used to go around picking up salvage from crashes and that was, that was a good job. And there was no billets so the police just came along and went, knocked on the door, ‘Right. I’ve got somebody. You’ll have to put this lad up.’ And all the crew and everything all went into private houses. So we just lived with the people. So that was good. Yeah. And that were extended from the top of Scotland right down to Darlington and everything that crashed that was to be picked up you know. So I was there for a long time. Yeah. Yeah. So that was a good, that was a good job. Yeah. Picking up aircraft and we were, we’d be away in Durham, we were over in the, over west and all over the place so it was a good. That was a good one. Yeah. Yeah. So I remember we were down at Whitley Bay. There was a, I can’t remember the name of the place but a big house there and a Spitfire had crashed so we were down there and we picked it up. So we drove along the front at Whitley Bay and I can’t remember the name of the hotel but anyway they were all recruits and they were being drilled and we come along with an old wagon and all the, all the muck and everything and the flight sergeant came out. ‘Get them out of there. Get them out of there.’ That lot, you know and I can remember you’d never seen such a, I mean we’d been working up to the ears in mud all day and that’s right. So that was quite funny that. Yeah. So I was there for a while and then I got posted down to [pause] I can’t remember where now. Anyway, we were working on Lockheed Hudsons this time you know. That’s right. And [pause] what happened was they used to land badly and the undercarriage went upwards and both petrol tanks were split. So that was and that was this crowd here by the phone. Civvies. So we worked with civilians working on these Lockheed Hudsons you know. So that was quite a good thing. I was there for ages and ages and ages there and then from there we went to 57. I was there a wee while and then was transferred to 617. That was it. Yeah. And then I went on as I say the unit and we went on this taking the engine out and putting them in and you could see the [unclear] when they did the Tirpitz. You know when they bombed the Tirpitz they changed all the engine on that. That’s right. I can’t remember that but I remember working on the engines you know. That’s right. And then after that I got moved again on to this new unit, Bomber Command Film Unit and that was the where two thingumyjigs there. And the war was to finish then so we were on Tiger Force. Yeah. Was on Tiger Force for that one. Yeah. And then I got posted to Gib and went on a troop ship. I mean why didn’t they fly me there? Went on a troop ship. Full of soldiers they were. They were saying all these ha ha you know. So we had a bit of a [unclear] getting out and then I was only there three months. Flew home, was demobbed and that was it. You know. Simple as that. Yeah.
JS: How did you, when you moved around as on ground crew did you tend to move around with the same people all the time or were you working with [unclear]
HR: Not really. We just seemed to be, you just, I mean we just got posted somehow. One minute they said, ‘Right. You’re off.’ And that was it, you know. That’s right.
JS: How, how, what was the relationship like between ground crew and aircrew?
HR: Didn’t do anything with them. Never saw them really. I mean you, you were on ground crew all the day you know. You never saw the ground, you didn’t see the aircrew until they came out at night, you know. That’s right. Yeah. You didn’t. I can’t remember ever seeing any. Being with them you know because we were so busy. I mean that when we went to East Kirkby it was such a huge ‘drome by the time we got out in the morning and walked over to dispersal, did our job it was time to come home for lunch. So in the end they had to get bikes. Everybody got a bike there because that was the only way they could do it. It was such a huge place. I’ve never seen such a place so big, you know. That’s right. But never, didn’t have anything to do with the aircrew at all. The only time we were coming away with aircrew was when we used to repair Ronson lighters. That was a good job. You know when they used to break we used to make the spring and there was always some aircrew that wanted that. That was the only time you saw them you know. But otherwise, no. Yeah.
JS: So did you work on, if you were at that aerodrome like East Kirkby you would work on lots of different aircraft. You wouldn’t just work on the same one.
HR: No. It was only on Lancasters. That’s right. Yeah. That’s the only ones we had. That’s right. Yeah. I remember flying to Derby I think it was to pick up a plane. One had landed and we saw planes there with two engines and they were doing experimental with jets you know. That’s right. And we couldn’t believe it. We thought, ‘They’ve got no propellers.’ You know. That’s right. So that was that. That was the only time I flew was when we flew down there to pick it up. One up. That’s right. Yeah. So, but nothing very exciting I’m afraid. But I mean that night with the Dambuster’s now we worked on there and we hadn’t a clue. I mean the planes were blacked out during the day and they were flying about and we were putting extra stuff in, electrical stuff but we had no bombs. And it was just about a day I think before the raid the bombs arrived and everybody looked at them and the armourer said, ‘I haven’t a clue. What are they going to use them for.’ So everybody got the idea they were going to be used against the Tirpitz. They were going to drop them and they were going to roll along and hit the Tirpitz. And that’s, that was the story. Yeah. I mean we hadn’t a clue that night. I was on duty that night and all I know. Yeah. So, and then I went to Gib and this, it was a lifeboat thing and it was underneath a Warwick plane and it was built by a guy called Uffa Fox. He was a famous boat guy. And there was an inboard motor and a twelve volt battery and that’s what I had to do was to make sure the battery was ok. So we got out this day, sailed around a bit and then what did they call it? A York was it? The civilian Lancaster. This arrived this day and this lady got out and she was the something of education, the Ministry of Education and she was going to fly from Gib to Malta. So this boat had to be got ready for her and put in to make sure that she had something. If anything happened on the way out she would have this boat you know. But I never heard any more about that, you know. That’s right. Yeah. But so I was at, I forget. Hendon I think I went. Anyway, and I went around with the guys and I said, ‘Now, you don’t have a lifeboat here?’ And the boatmen went, ‘Eh?’ They didn’t know. They didn’t know about an airborne lifeboat. That’s right. Yeah. And I see it was up in north, up in the north of Scotland. They had the, after the war they had the unit up there. That’s right. So, but that was it, that finished me off then. I just flew back to Manchester and was demobbed and that was it. So it was nothing special you know. Yeah.
JS: You, you mentioned being on duty on the night of the Dambuster’s raid.
HR: Yeah. Yeah.
JS: So if, if it was secrecy beforehand and nobody knew what was happening and whatever what was the, what was the feeling like on the base after?
HR: Well, we knew there was something on because the Red Caps were on the front door, the phones were all cut off and nobody was allowed out for ages. Now, we knew there was something but when you’re inside you just didn’t know. We were just, you were just keeping, getting on with the jobs you see and that was that. It was the same at night. It was just like an ordinary flying off at night. That was it. That’s right. And we didn’t know when they came back what was. We never knew then. It wasn’t until we heard about it the next day. That’s right. It was very, it was very secret. Yeah.
JS: And what was, what was the feeling like on the base when the news came out the next day?
HR: I think they were more surprised than anything you know. It, I mean then it suddenly dawned that, was that what the motor was underneath? Was that what that was? But I mean it wasn’t until we saw the actual films and that we knew what had happened. Yeah. Because, I mean they used to, you’d be working away beforehand and I mean you’d see the plane coming but the side windows were glazed over and things like that and the guys were flying blind. Well, not blind but flying in dark. In daylight darkness. That’s correct. Yeah. But I can’t remember much about it really. I mean it was just, you were just doing your normal jobs. You didn’t know anything special was going on. You just got on with what you were doing you know. You got a paper and you had to do something on, put something in and that was it. Yeah.
JS: But there must have been special visitors to the base after with the, like now.
HR: Well, once again we were put back behind bars, not bars but you were back on, on the old duty going to, you were just working away, you know. That’s right. It was over and it was over you know.
JS: So what, so what did you do after the war?
HR: What I’m doing now.
JS: The time when you were demobbed.
HR: What I’m doing now. Shoe repairer. Yeah. [unclear] Avenue and I’ve been there from 1946 when I come out. I’ve been there and I’m still there. So nothing happening [laughs] no.
JS: There’s nothing wrong with that.
HR: No.
JS: With, with as a Bomber Command veteran how do you think you and Bomber Command were treated after the war?
HR: Blooming rotten. I think so. I mean I read in the paper every day somebody saying that. [Dresden] of course that killed it dead that did. But I mean there were one on here the other night on about saying we should never have bombed Germany. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t this. But I mean it didn’t say about London and Coventry and you know everything else did it? No. And they’re still, still on. People. I know. Yeah.
JS: Do you think it’s, it’s changed at all?
HR: I don’t think that. Well, there still must be. Maybe. Maybe this lot. But even the younger ones. I’ve been reading about it and they’re on about it and saying it shouldn’t have been done. And I mean I can show you on here some Berlin at the back end you know. That’s what. That’s what I get when they see people running about in and they get but of course that bit was the Russians so that had nothing to do with us. You know. That’s right. I don’t get it. But there’s so many. Even the ones in parliament are still nagging on. Yeah.
JS: How, how do you think what was the feeling about Churchill at the time do you think?
HR: Didn’t have any. Never used to worry about me or any other and we just got on with the, you just got on with the job. You didn’t worry about them. It was like when I was at [pause] I can’t remember the place now but we were in bed on the Sunday morning when war was declared you know and somebody said, ‘Are you going over there for breakfast? Will you bring me a mug of tea back?’ And that was all that was mentioned. The war was on and they were talking about bringing a mug of tea back. You know what I mean. You couldn’t believe it. And that day the war was declared we got a gas mask, a gas cape, a tin hat and we had to go on patrol up in the hills there to guard the water tower with a pickaxe handle against the IRA. Now, I mean that’s what we were fighting. Against the IRA when war was declared. I mean you couldn’t believe it. It’s just unbelievable. This was with a pickaxe handle. I mean it’s crazy. And then, then one of the guys got smallpox so we were all confined to barracks. Nobody could go out so they used to bring the meals, put them in the door and they used to bring the morning papers and jigsaw puzzles and things. We were there a fortnight. Couldn’t go out with smallpox you know. That could be dangerous so the Red Caps used to come down and used to walk you up in the hills and then bring you back. That was it. But I mean that was the day they declared war and that’s all. That was it, you know. Still can’t believe it. Yeah. But I ended up, you know in doing the two courses. That took quite a while you know. That’s right. Yeah. And then of course you went up a scale. That meant an extra few pennies. A few pennies a week. Yeah. I know. So funny. Yeah. So —
JS: That’s great.
HR: Nothing very much I’m afraid.
JS: No. That’s been really really good. I’ll just stop this.
HR: I beg your pardon?
JS: I’ll just stop this.

[bold] REMINISCENCES OF MRS JEAN CRAWFORD (nee Taplin) [/bold]
[bold] HOME LIFE [/bold]
The earliest I remember is a black kitchen range for cooking cakes and Sunday roasts in the oven and vegetables on the top. There was always a kettle on the hob, ready for tea. I had to walk to the village pump to fill a three pint milk can of water until 1946. We were in the council houses when they were built in 1939 (numbers 1-4). Numbers 5-8 were built in 1946/47. We used to fill a bucket full of ain water to flush the toilet. The water was not available although the taps and a cistern were there. A copper was in the corner of the kitchen to boil the washing in, heated by a wood fire underneath. Rainwater was used for bathing and washing. Electric coppers and cooker were used soon after the War in 1947/48. Bread was delivered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Butcher came on Wednesday and Friday. Groceries were delivered on a Wednesday and you gave your order for the following week.
No central heating of course – as you let the kitchen fire out, we lit the living room five. Mainly wood was burned. My Dad had a cut in Charndon Wood. He would buy a section for pea sticks, bean sticks, firelighting wood (to be tied in faggots) and some thicker bits to be cut into logs. He brought this home in one of the first tractors- Standard Fordson and trailer.
In Winter we lived on rabbit stew and vegetables with dumplings. Dad shot the rabbits and sold them for two shillings and sixpence (half a crown) in the village. We always had a roast on a Sunday, cold on Monday with bubble and squeak as this was always washday. Mum made rissoles on Tuesday. We always had a fruit pie on Sunday, jam tarts for tea, suet puddings such as jam roly poly, spotted dick, or syrup dumplings. In the Summer, we lived on lettuce sandwiches – the lettuce was always out of the garden – never bought. We also had a pig in a sty which was killed once a year and stored it in the bedroom and kitchen. This made two big hams. At killing time there were chitterlings to fry. The fat to cut up and frizzled until all the fat was out which was lard. This left us with scratchings to eat cold with bread which were delicious. The liver was good also. I didn’t like pig’s head – mum used to make brawn.
Mum made all sorts of jams – plum, blackberry and apple, gooseberry, damson. Marmalade was made in January/February with Seville Oranges bought from the greengrocer. The fruits were either grown or relations gave them to you to make jam. We also picked blackberries off the hedgerows.
Another thing of course was chamber pots, always one under each bed for night use only.
At Christmas time some people had a Christmas Tree but we didn’t. My Gran and Grandad would fatter up a cockerel to about 7lbs. This was good cooked with our own vegetables. Gran used to make the pudding and boil in her kitchen copper (with the fire going underneath for 8 hours). She also kept chickens so we had eggs. She used to make rhubarb wine – which was her speciality. We children were not allowed to drink any!
When people died they were kept at home and often the coffin came out of the bedroom window and on the bier to Church. This was a trailer with four wheels and a handle and pulled along manually. The mourners walked behind, always in black.
[bold] WARTIME [/bold]
A Lockheed Hudson crashed by Gubbin’s Hole bridge in Mr Benfield’s field.
A Handley Page Hampden crashed down and all the crew got out. They thought they were in Holland and set fire to it!
I was staying with my Grandparents at Cuddington when a doodlebug switched off as it flew over and crashed at Brill. This frightened them but I was in bed asleep.

[bold] LEISURE [/bold]
As children we would walk down to Charndon Wood (where the rubbish tip is now) and would pick basketfuls of primroses and later on bluebells. The ground was covered in primroses so peaceful and safe. On the entrance bridleway to the wood gypsies would live for two weeks at a time with the horsedrawn caravans, making clothes pegs from the willow or nut trees, selling them round the village. My mother always bought some.
[bold] WORKING LIFE [/bold]
Two village pumps, one just opposite the Fox Public House and one left of the public footpath to the side of the Leach’s property. They were gravity fed pumps – the two wells were situated in Mr. Howlett’s field by Tim Benfield’s orchard.
In the Summers during the 1950’s and 1960’s the village men used to take a stick and hook and each cut a section of the churchyard and then visit the Fox Inn for light refreshment – a good time was had by all.
The brick lorries used to block the road from Calvert through Edgcott on their return from a day’s delivery of bricks at 20 m.p.h. They were not on piecework then!
After the Second World War women of the village would pick washing trays full of blackberries to sell to a manufacturer to make jam at 2 pence a lb. – going up each year. The youngsters would collect conkers, take them to a collecting point to make glue for the war effort – also rosehips for rosehip syrup and sheep wool off the barbed wire. We used to collect it in buckets, shopping bags or hessian sacks for conkers. Every lawn was dug up and vegetables grown.
Most village people that were not in the Forces were volunteered for the Home Guard. My father worked on the farm (he had a hearing defect). He was up at 5.30 to milk 40 cows by hand, (no heating). Home for breakfast at 8 a.m. – always fried egg and bacon and fried bread. He was back to work at 8.30 a.m. to clean the cowsheds down, sweeping and shovelling the much into a wheelbarrow, putting clean litter down when they stayed indoors in the winter. He swept the yard up when it was laid down to concrete in the late 1940’s. Dinner was at mid-day until 12.30 – 1p.m. depending on whether it was haymaking or harvest time. Milking again at 3.30 p.m. and back home at 5.30 to 6 p.m. depending on whether a cow was calving. In the summer it was back for haymaking and then harvest. Home then was 10 p.m. and a wash with a kettle full of hot water, no shower or bath. That was once a week job on a Friday night in front of the fire in the kitchen.
We went on holiday every other year. Mum would buy the food and make the menu out for the landlady who would cook it for us. Dad would have three pints of milk a day and more in the evening if he wanted it. It was always in a milk can.
[bold] VILLAGE PERSONALITIES [/bold]
Louis Busby lived in Rose Cottage as it is now. He was a very perky 5ft. 7ins. Dressed in a trilby hat, black trousers and dark shirt, very quick in movement and talk – a likeable man.
Old Mrs. Small, whose house was between Rose Cottage and the Post Office, had white hair which she used to put rag curlers in. A rounded lady, always pleasant. Freddy Bradburn found her dead in her cottage when delivering bread.
[page break]
They were sisters – the same height – 5ft. 6ins. They were always so neat and trim and very polite and pleasant. They always wore hats and gloves.
Mr. Findlay was a shopkeeper in a little thatched shop where the brick shed is now next to Miss Mortimers. He was tall – 5ft. 11ins., slim and quick walking. He had a glass eye which always stared at you. He sold paraffin for the then much used paraffin stoves to cook on in the Summer.
Old Mrs. Butler – Peter Harper’s Great Grandmother. She was tiny – only 5ft 1in. who was very rounded and also had a glass eye. She always wore black.
Bele Hammond lived in the rectory. She was very much a spinster and always told you off for picking her apples up that had fallen over the hedge. She used to frighten me.
George Barratt lived next door to Manor Farm. He came from Norfolk – a real farm looking gentleman who was a chapel man and also liked hunting. He spoke well and was tallish.
Will Taplin – my father would say what he thought and upset people on several occasions. He used to go to see his father at Grendon Underwood and a neighbour of his told me it was like listening to two foreigners talking. They both had very broad Buckinghamshire accents. Dad used to help the Pensioners in his latter years. He was 5ft.8ins. tall, wore a cap, dark trousers and a jacket and smoked a pipe. He was also deaf but did have a hearing aid the last few years of his life. He loved playing Whist and Dominoes. If you were his partner and played the wrong card you were severely told off!! He died at 80 years.
[bold] EDUCATION [/bold]
Edgcott School closed in 1914/15.
My schooldays began in 1940/41 when my mother took me to school in a seat on her bicycle for 9 a.m. to Grendon Underwood Church of England School. I took sandwiches for my DINNER not lunch. Dinner at mid-day was eater in the playground. Playtimes were at 10.30 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. We did reading, writing and arithmetic, scripture each morning and learned our tables parrot fashion. We had sewing in the headmistress’s garden in the afternoon. 1946 saw me walking to school or maybe a bicycle. Outside toilets were emptied each Friday night. By this time we were having cooked dinners cooked in the canteen built in the playground. We also had cookery lessons in the Saye and Sele Room at Grendon Underwood.
During the war years the evacuees were billeted out to those who had room. Pat Lewis to Mr. And Mrs. Young, Manor Farm, Queenie Lewis to Mr. and Mrs. Barrett next door to Manor Farm. Ann Blue stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Stuchbury at No. 4 Lawn Hill. Betty Pollard, Freddie Bradburn with Mrs Pauline in May House. Shirley Hampton lived in Rectory Farm with her mother and Grandmother – this end nearest the Church when Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Busby lived there. They had a class of their own with their own teacher, Miss Barrett, a fiery woman.
When I was 12 and a half years old I went to Waddesdon Church of England School with all the same age, or older. These were Alan Golby and Brian Bates.
I’d ride my bicycle to Grendon Garage to travel by bus. It took some getting used to. I remember we played netball in shorts and T shirt. I left school at 15 – much to my mother’s annoyance. It was 14 but they put the school leaving age up by one year when it was my turn!

Here are the shoe shine boys in Cairo, the local lido and The Nile.
The Second Battle of El Alamein took place over 13 days from 23rd October to 4th November 1942 and the Allies’ victory marked a major turning point in the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War. The Allied victory turned the tide in the North African Campaign and ended Axis hopes of occupying Egypt, tak-ing control of the Suez Canal, and gaining access to the Middle Eastern and Persian oil fields. By the end of October Daddy’s total flying hours were 283.45 by day and 283.40 by night.
In November and December 1942 he occasionally flew in Hudson bombers as well as the Halifaxes, Opera-tions 31 to 45. There were attacks on Daba on the Fuka Road, Tunis and Elmas aerodromes, docks and jetties in Tunisia and then on to to [sic] Malta. He was finally taken as a passenger from Malta to Benghasi, [sic] El Adem and on to Shallufa, north of Cairo.
[page break]
Between the 4th and the 24th of January 1942, Flight Lieutenant E J Saunders travelled with British Airways from Cairo to Poole in Dorset. This took 13 separate flights. An astonishing set of connections with him as a passenger, he went from Cairo to Wadi Halfa (Egypt) to Khartoum (Sudan) to Malakal to Laropi to Stanley-ville (Belgian Congo) to Coquihatville to Leopoldville to Libreville (French West Africa) to Lagos (Nigeria) to Bathurst (Gambia) to Lisbon (Portugal) to Foynes (Eire) to Poole. We have no idea why he went on this ex-traordinary journey; perhaps many airmen travelled this way in order to take up leave. One of the planes was RMA, BA Bangor (A flying boat) and the other RMA BA Carpentaria (RMA, Royal Mail Aircraft). These long range clippers were American Boeing 314s and servedBA then BOAC when BA joined Imperial Airways in 1939.
At this point he was awarded his DFC, The Distinguished Flying Cross for “an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy”.
In [sic] 25th January 1943 he completed a Decompression Test and after a brief time with 16 Operational Training Unit (OTU) carrying out special navigational training, he moved to24 Squadron where he stayed until the end of June.
Initially there were Special Navigational flights in Wellingtons and Hudsons, practising cross-country naviga-tion flying out of Hendon Approach, which is now the RAF museum at Hendon.
Then came daytime transport flights in Hudsons and Dakotas out to Maison Blanche (Algeria) and RAF Castel Benito (late RAF Idris) near Tripoli in Libya, and to Malta and Tunisia. Then in Dakotas and Hudsons, he was flying the same long North African routes across RAF bases and through the Mediterranean sometimes out of Portreath in Scotland. These were mainly transport flights but occasionally carried VIPs. The same destina-tions; Blida, Maison Blanche, Luqa, Casablanca, Oujda, La Senia, Gibraltar, Ain Oussera. There were frequent-ly several flights a day with flying time from 15 minutes to 3 hours.
Total Flying Hours to date were an astonishing 653.15 by day and 471.55 by night.

[underlined] T.F.U DEFFORD. [/underlined]
In January I943 [sic] I was posted to Telecommunications Flying Unit, Defford near Worcester. This was the sharp end of the Telecommunications Research Establishment at Malvern, known briefly as T.R.E., where all the various radar devices for the R.A.F. were thought up in pursuance of the war and tested out by the flying unit at Defford. T.R.E. moved from Swanage on the South coast after the Bruneval raid had captured large chunks of the German Wurtzberg their early warning radar system, and it was thought they might retaliate. Malvern Boys Public School was taken over and T.R.E. moved in with their equipment and scientists, known as Boffins, some well known names among them including Bernard Lovell later Sir Bernard of Joddrell Bank fame.
T.F.U. Defford consisted of two wings, Defensive (Fighters etc) and Offensive (Bombers and Coastal Command), and being a Bomber type I was posted to the latter: THIS ACCOUNT DEALS ONLY WITH this wing.
We had a variety of aircraft including the Lancaster Mks. I, II, III, Halifax Mks. I, II, Stirling Mks. I, III, Wellington Mks. Ic, II, III, Blenheim Mk. IV, Hudson, Mosquito and a few others, and the pilots were expected to fly all of these. We had no dual – just a demonstation [sic] circuit and Pilots Notes – so were a bit vulnerable if anything went wrong. Fortunately emergencies were rather rare and accidents few. The Boffins flew on most of our flights as well as Specialist Navigation Officers and occasionally Signals Officers. A lot of the testing was on H2S and warning devices for air gunners, airborne search radar for Coastal Command. We also did early trials on G.C.A. and equipment for lacating [sic] dinghies – one pilot earning himself a well-merited A.F.C. by volunteering to parachute at night in midwinter into the Irish Sea.
Security at Defford was very tight and R.A.F. Police were everywhere: aircrew needed special passes signed by the Station Commander to enter the aircraft, and aircraft were not permitted to land elsewhere or stay away overnight without his authority. On one occasion I had to fly a Lancaster to Wyton for the A.O.C. 8 Group to carry out some tests on a new stabilised H2S. Air Commodore Bennett, as he then was, flew the aircraft himself with me as a passenger and the Group Navigation Officer working the radar. After an hour’s flying over Nottingham and Leicester (for some reason these two cities were usually the targets for H2S testing – probably a good picture on the screen) Bennett landed and he and the navigator seemed pleased with the project. As there was a party in the Mess that night and I had done a tour of ops previously at Wyton I boldly asked the A.O.C. if he wouln’t [sic] loke [sic] to do further testing the next day. After all if you don’t ask . . . . . He might well have said Yes, bring the aircraft back to-morrow, and that would have served me right. But instead he said “I presume you want to go to the party?” and when I replied Yes I did he went to the nearest telephone and spoke to the C.O. at Defford and told him he was very pleased with the equipment and would like to try it out again the next day, and he would accept responsibility for the aircraft staying overnight. Then he turned to me and said “There you are Boggis, enjoy your evening. 0900 hours take-off, don’t be late.” A pretty reasonable gesture I thought.
While on the subject of security I must mention an incident involing [sic] the U.S.A.A.F. By the end of I943 [sic] we had two Flying Fortresses attached to Defford, equipped with H2S and flown by their own crews. Supposedly they were subject to the same security regulations as we were. When the Americans started up their Pathfinder Force they threw an Inaugaral [sic] party at Alconbury and several of us went from Defford, but not allowed to fly there we went by car. Imagine our surprise on arrival to see both the Defford BI9’s [sic] on the airfield, complete with their radar domes for all to see. Then walking along a corridor in one of the buildings we passed the skipper of one of these BI9’s [sic] with an American nurse on his arm. Someone asked him where his navigator was and he said “Down at the radar section” (few people knew the Americans had radar in those days). The nurse said “Gee, you got radar here,” and he replied “Sure, Honey.” But to his credit he told here he couldn’t show her it.
Later we discovered that the Americans had filled these two aircraft with nurses
[page break]
from their hospital near Malvern and flown them up to Alconbury. Goodness knows how they smuggled them onto the base at Defford, let alone into the aircraft!
One of our pilots had an unfortunate accident: half way down the runway on [inserted] [circled 1] [/inserted] take-off he found he had got ‘George’ in, tried to overpower it but was not successful and ended up going through the fence that surrounded Station Headquarters and came to rest outside the Station Commander’s Office. No one was injured and the aircraft was only slightly damaged, repairable on Unit.
The C.O. rushed out of his office and into the aircraft, grabbed [inserted] [circled 2] [/inserted] the first person he saw, who happened to be a civilian Boffin and shouted at him “What happened?” and this fellow, despite being a bit shaken, replied with commendable sang-froid “I don’t know: why don’t you ask the Pilot?” The outcome was that the pilot in due course was sent to the Brighton Disciplinary Course for two weeks, which we all took a very dim view of, especially as he had been an acting Squadron Leader in Bomber Command with a DSO and DFC. He came back from it none the worse for wear with horrific stories of what went on there, and amazingly without too much bitterness. These Discip courses, I feel, were never intended for this sort of thing and I don’t think would have happened in Bomber Command: but Defford was not in Bommber [sic] Command and these things were viewed differently on non-operational stations. We were always rather apprehensive in case we did something silly like a taxying accident. Sure enough an incident did occur to me: I was taxying a Stirling to the hangar when the brakes failed and although I quickly switched all engines off the aircraft slowly rolled down the gently slope to the hangar doors. Visions of Brighton loomed large before me, particularly as the propellor boss of one engine just touched the hangar door. The dent on the boss was insignificant and luck was on my side as the engineering Officer who saw the incident quickly had the boss replaced and we thought no one would be any the wiser. But people talk of course and several days later the acting C.O. of [inserted] [circled 3] [/inserted] my Wing sent for me and asked why I had not reported this incident and that I should consider myself lucky that I was not up before the Station Commander. However he said he was not going to pursue it further and that was the end of the matter. Sad to say he died heroically a year later when shot down flying a Stirling at Arnhem.
Flying back on one occasion from an experimental sortie I thought I would see how A [sic] Lancaster would cope, firstly on two engines, and then on one engine. I was flying at 20,000 ft and with two fans feathered the aircraft could just maintain height (this was the Merlin engine type): with three feathered I had to put it into a gentle glide path to keep up the airspeed. I was most impressed with the performance. What the Boffins thought of some of our antics I can’t imagine, but I reckon they were pretty long suffering. Here’s how a fellow aircrew member saw my little experiment at the time.
