My Wartime Memories by Richard Yates
Richard 'Dick' Yates was a wireless operator/air gunner on 35 Squadron flying Halifax. He was shot down and became a prisoner of war. Dick did his basic training at Blackpool. While at Cranwell for wireless training he flew in DH 86 and Valentia.

Despite earlier army reports being reliable, it is claimed that there is now German disinformation concerning the Russian campaign and the high number of casualties and prisoners.
After spotting a battle cruiser on 22nd July, an RAF operation was carried out on 24th July with damage to the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst battle cruisers and Prinz Eugen cruiser. 34 Messerschmitts were shot down. It claims German ships are now effectively confined to ports.
In a London radio broadcast, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s adviser, Harry Hopkins, outlines American assistance to Britain, including joint patrols by warships, significant numbers of aircraft, food, and military equipment already en route.

Ten Serbs are hanged in Pancevo, on the orders of Bandelow after posters appeared stating that ten Serbs would be hanged for every German soldier killed or wounded. There are photographs of the hangings and of the notice.
Several occupied cities were fined for using the V-sign (for victory) as an act of defiance. To counter this, the propaganda ministry has stolen the sign for its own use.
Claims public is being deceived about share dividends being reduced (regulation to limit the distribution of profits on 21st June 1941).

The RAF flight range will increase as nights draw in, with heavier bombs at their disposal. Advice is dispensed to German urban populations on preparations to take for the autumn and winter.
Lord Woolton, Minister of Food, on 15 July denigrates German media propaganda on the state of British nutrition; he claims German prisoners are amazed at how abundant it is and points to American supplies in the coming year with a higher nutritional value than the last fifteen years.
America and Britain and its allies have frozen all Japanese assets as a result of it taking French-Indochina.

By taking over protection of Iceland, the United States has reduced the danger zone for British ships crossing the Atlantic, fulfilling the United States’ Secretary of State, Cordell Hull’s promise that weapons and foodstuff would safely reach their destination.
With the news that Dr Robert Ley had visited some bombed cities in West Germany, the correspondent makes some comparisons between the good things England is doing for its people compared to Germany’s leaders.

"Fred" by Sylvia White (his cousin)
Fred's life story from early days sneaking downstairs to drink the dregs at his parent's public house, playing rugby and studying hard, becoming an accountant, learning to be an accurate rifle shooter then joining the RAF as a an air gunner. He survived a tour of 30 operations. After the war he studied for a B.Sc in Forestry and worked for the Forestry Commission.

Pilots flying log book for Keith F Thiele, covering the period from 20 January 1941 to 18 February 1946. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and instructor duties including his conversion to single seat fighters with operations over Europe claiming 2 Me 109s and one Ju 52. He was stationed at RNZAF Harewood, RNZAF Woodbourne, RAF Wellesbourne, RAF Pocklington, RAF Marston Moor, RAF Abingdon, RAF Hullavington, RAF Waddington, RAF Bottesford, RAF Hendon, RAF Dorval, RAF Eshott, RAF Bulmer, RAF Tangmere, RAF Friston, RAF Bolt Head, RAF West Malling, RAF Wigram, RAF Lympne, RAF Swanton Morley, RAF Bognor, RAF Thorney Island and RAF Vokel. Aircraft flown in were Tiger Moth, Oxford, Wellington, Magister, Halifax, Whitley, Tutor, Anson, Lancaster, Ventura, Dakota, Hudson, Norseman, Mariner, Liberator, Spitfire, Dominie, Typhoon, Auster, Tempest and Harvard. He flew a total of 56 operations, 32 with 405 Squadron and 24 with 467 Squadron. He also flew fighter operations with 41 and 486 Squadrons. Targets were Dunkirk, Berlin, Wilhelmshaven, Cherbourg, Emden, Bremen, Brest, Mannheim, Kiel, Paris, St Nazaire, Essen, Cologne, Hamburg, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Duisburg, Bayonne, Turin, Nuremburg, Stuttgart, and La Spezia. Loose on the wind
Starts with a poem and then a series of stories which together form the memoirs of Harold Yeoman, an officer who served in Bomber Command during the war, initially as a pilot on Wellingtons and then as an Intelligence Officer. He relates his activities both professionally and personally during this time and recounts the many friends and colleagues he lost whilst on operations. He recalls his flying training on the Tiger Moths at Sywell, then on to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada for further training. He was then posted to Bassingbourne O.T.U. to train to fly Wellingtons, before going to Binbrook on operational flying duties. Harold flew a number of operations before being grounded due to medical reasons. It was whilst he was grounded that his crew were reported as missing and subsequently recorded as killed in action. While waiting for his Medical Board, Harold was stationed at the Operational Training Unit at Moreton-in-the-Marsh ferrying brand new Wellingtons from Kemble and flying them to Moreton to hand over to pupil crews. He was then moved to ‘X’ Flight of the O.T.U and trained new pilots before being grounded again for medical reasons when he transferred into Intelligence for Bomber Command. He completed his R.A.F. career in Penang as an Adjutant.

Introduces Michael G Hanson an RAF reservist and tells of time sailing before stating training. Covers elementary and advanced training before joining 233 Squadron at RAF Leuchars on Hudson. Relates life on the station, in local area and on maritime operations. Continues with accounts of convoy escort from Northern Ireland and life at RAF Aldergrove including meeting member of women's auxiliary air force. Relates attacks on Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and other Atlantic operations from RAF St Eval. After completing his tour he became a navigator instructor. He was posted to bomber command in June 1944 and trained on Wellington and Halifax and then on to Lancaster at RAF Hemswell. Describes first operation over France while still training. Eventually goes to 625 Squadron at RAF Kelstern. Gives detailed account of operations including Essen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bochum (attached by fighter), Gelsenkirchen, Wanne-Eickel, Dortmund, Harburg, Duren, Bonn, St Vith, Rheydt, Sholven/Buer (oil refinery). Interspersed with accounts of life on camp. Continues with description of other operations, pathfinding, H2S, use of Mosquito. Gives account of operation to Dresden and other operations towards end of the war. Concludes with mention of Operation Manna and award of Distinguished Flying Cross and life after the end of the war. All the way through he writes of activities, events, friends, colleagues and girl friends.

Interview with Ron Davies
Ron Davis talks of his joining the RAF and early training at Cardington, Bournemouth and Halton. He trained as fitter and was posted to RAF Scampton on Hamden with 49 Squadron. Tells many stories of life as groundcrew at Scampton including his experiences of working and living conditions on the base. Includes John Hannah VC, losing aircraft on operations against Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and talks of battle damaged aircraft. Mentions flying as spare on air test and training as well as Cook's tour at end of the war. Mentions how American engineers were much better equiped that RAF. Moves to RAF Winthorpe on conversion unit when 49 converted to Manchester/Lancaster.

DFC for local airman
Pilot Officer Robert Wareing awarded DFC for his part in attack on Brest harbour. His was one of four crews who volunteered. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were in the harbour but was not known if they were damaged.

The WW2 Experiences of Alan William Green
A biography of Alan Green with personal photographs and headlines. It covers his training in Canada and UK. First squadron was 218 at Marham flying Wellingtons as a navigator, then Stirlings. He flew 22 operations and was shot down by friendly fire. He successfully baled out but was shot down again near Amsterdam. He was captured and spent the rest of the war at Stalag Luft 3. There is a section on life as
a prisoner of war and the Long March.

Alan Green's Royal Canadian Air Force observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book
A.W. Green’s RCAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 14th January 1941 to 19th June 1942, detailing training and operations as a navigator. He was stationed at RCAF Base Port Albert (No. 1 Air Navigation School), Canadian Forces Base Picton (No. 31 Bombing and Gunnery School), RAF Benson (12 OTU), RAF Lichfield (27 OTU), RAF Lossiemouth (20 OTU) and RAF Marham (218 squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Anson, Battle, Wellington Ic and Stirling. His pilots on operations were Sergeant Griggs and Squadron Leader Ashworth. He completed a total of 20 night operations on the following targets in Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France and Germany: Bremen, Brest, Cologne, Dortmund, Emden, Essen, Hamburg, Langelands Belt (Gardening), Lyons, Mannheim, Ostend, Paris (Gnome-Rhone works), Plzen, Scharnhost and Gneisau and Wilhelmshaven. Notes include 30/5/42: “TOOK AVM BALDWIN” (Air Officer Commanding No.3 Group).
