[underlined] T.F.U DEFFORD. [/underlined]
In January I943 [sic] I was posted to Telecommunications Flying Unit, Defford near Worcester. This was the sharp end of the Telecommunications Research Establishment at Malvern, known briefly as T.R.E., where all the various radar devices for the R.A.F. were thought up in pursuance of the war and tested out by the flying unit at Defford. T.R.E. moved from Swanage on the South coast after the Bruneval raid had captured large chunks of the German Wurtzberg their early warning radar system, and it was thought they might retaliate. Malvern Boys Public School was taken over and T.R.E. moved in with their equipment and scientists, known as Boffins, some well known names among them including Bernard Lovell later Sir Bernard of Joddrell Bank fame.
T.F.U. Defford consisted of two wings, Defensive (Fighters etc) and Offensive (Bombers and Coastal Command), and being a Bomber type I was posted to the latter: THIS ACCOUNT DEALS ONLY WITH this wing.
We had a variety of aircraft including the Lancaster Mks. I, II, III, Halifax Mks. I, II, Stirling Mks. I, III, Wellington Mks. Ic, II, III, Blenheim Mk. IV, Hudson, Mosquito and a few others, and the pilots were expected to fly all of these. We had no dual – just a demonstation [sic] circuit and Pilots Notes – so were a bit vulnerable if anything went wrong. Fortunately emergencies were rather rare and accidents few. The Boffins flew on most of our flights as well as Specialist Navigation Officers and occasionally Signals Officers. A lot of the testing was on H2S and warning devices for air gunners, airborne search radar for Coastal Command. We also did early trials on G.C.A. and equipment for lacating [sic] dinghies – one pilot earning himself a well-merited A.F.C. by volunteering to parachute at night in midwinter into the Irish Sea.
Security at Defford was very tight and R.A.F. Police were everywhere: aircrew needed special passes signed by the Station Commander to enter the aircraft, and aircraft were not permitted to land elsewhere or stay away overnight without his authority. On one occasion I had to fly a Lancaster to Wyton for the A.O.C. 8 Group to carry out some tests on a new stabilised H2S. Air Commodore Bennett, as he then was, flew the aircraft himself with me as a passenger and the Group Navigation Officer working the radar. After an hour’s flying over Nottingham and Leicester (for some reason these two cities were usually the targets for H2S testing – probably a good picture on the screen) Bennett landed and he and the navigator seemed pleased with the project. As there was a party in the Mess that night and I had done a tour of ops previously at Wyton I boldly asked the A.O.C. if he wouln’t [sic] loke [sic] to do further testing the next day. After all if you don’t ask . . . . . He might well have said Yes, bring the aircraft back to-morrow, and that would have served me right. But instead he said “I presume you want to go to the party?” and when I replied Yes I did he went to the nearest telephone and spoke to the C.O. at Defford and told him he was very pleased with the equipment and would like to try it out again the next day, and he would accept responsibility for the aircraft staying overnight. Then he turned to me and said “There you are Boggis, enjoy your evening. 0900 hours take-off, don’t be late.” A pretty reasonable gesture I thought.
While on the subject of security I must mention an incident involing [sic] the U.S.A.A.F. By the end of I943 [sic] we had two Flying Fortresses attached to Defford, equipped with H2S and flown by their own crews. Supposedly they were subject to the same security regulations as we were. When the Americans started up their Pathfinder Force they threw an Inaugaral [sic] party at Alconbury and several of us went from Defford, but not allowed to fly there we went by car. Imagine our surprise on arrival to see both the Defford BI9’s [sic] on the airfield, complete with their radar domes for all to see. Then walking along a corridor in one of the buildings we passed the skipper of one of these BI9’s [sic] with an American nurse on his arm. Someone asked him where his navigator was and he said “Down at the radar section” (few people knew the Americans had radar in those days). The nurse said “Gee, you got radar here,” and he replied “Sure, Honey.” But to his credit he told here he couldn’t show her it.
Later we discovered that the Americans had filled these two aircraft with nurses
[page break]
from their hospital near Malvern and flown them up to Alconbury. Goodness knows how they smuggled them onto the base at Defford, let alone into the aircraft!
One of our pilots had an unfortunate accident: half way down the runway on [inserted] [circled 1] [/inserted] take-off he found he had got ‘George’ in, tried to overpower it but was not successful and ended up going through the fence that surrounded Station Headquarters and came to rest outside the Station Commander’s Office. No one was injured and the aircraft was only slightly damaged, repairable on Unit.
The C.O. rushed out of his office and into the aircraft, grabbed [inserted] [circled 2] [/inserted] the first person he saw, who happened to be a civilian Boffin and shouted at him “What happened?” and this fellow, despite being a bit shaken, replied with commendable sang-froid “I don’t know: why don’t you ask the Pilot?” The outcome was that the pilot in due course was sent to the Brighton Disciplinary Course for two weeks, which we all took a very dim view of, especially as he had been an acting Squadron Leader in Bomber Command with a DSO and DFC. He came back from it none the worse for wear with horrific stories of what went on there, and amazingly without too much bitterness. These Discip courses, I feel, were never intended for this sort of thing and I don’t think would have happened in Bomber Command: but Defford was not in Bommber [sic] Command and these things were viewed differently on non-operational stations. We were always rather apprehensive in case we did something silly like a taxying accident. Sure enough an incident did occur to me: I was taxying a Stirling to the hangar when the brakes failed and although I quickly switched all engines off the aircraft slowly rolled down the gently slope to the hangar doors. Visions of Brighton loomed large before me, particularly as the propellor boss of one engine just touched the hangar door. The dent on the boss was insignificant and luck was on my side as the engineering Officer who saw the incident quickly had the boss replaced and we thought no one would be any the wiser. But people talk of course and several days later the acting C.O. of [inserted] [circled 3] [/inserted] my Wing sent for me and asked why I had not reported this incident and that I should consider myself lucky that I was not up before the Station Commander. However he said he was not going to pursue it further and that was the end of the matter. Sad to say he died heroically a year later when shot down flying a Stirling at Arnhem.
Flying back on one occasion from an experimental sortie I thought I would see how A [sic] Lancaster would cope, firstly on two engines, and then on one engine. I was flying at 20,000 ft and with two fans feathered the aircraft could just maintain height (this was the Merlin engine type): with three feathered I had to put it into a gentle glide path to keep up the airspeed. I was most impressed with the performance. What the Boffins thought of some of our antics I can’t imagine, but I reckon they were pretty long suffering. Here’s how a fellow aircrew member saw my little experiment at the time.

NAZI BID FOR POLITICAL WIN
AN interesting reflection of the British official view on the present aspect of the war was given in London, yesterday, by Mr. Brendan Bracken, Minister of Information, when he spoke at an American Thanksgiving Day luncheon.
In an analysis of the present trends of Nazi policy, Mr. Bracken declared that Hitler’s latest plan to escape the disaster which threatens the Reich is to split the United Nations by creating causes of disunity, and to negotiate separate peace treaties. “Hitler and Goebbels and their tribe have made their plans to meet the prospects of a military defeat,” he said. “They wish to wrest from military defeat a political victory which will enable Germany to escape the consequences of losing this terrible war on mankind.”
This view comes as near to the realities of to-day’s war picture as any recently expressed by authoritative spokesmen. It certainly aligns with views which have already been expressed in this column. In an editorial two months ago we pointed out the soundness of the assumption that a nation which had prepared for a great war as thoroughly as did Germany could be relied upon to prepare just as thoroughly to meet the prospects of defeat and to wriggle out of that disastrous situation on the best possible terms.
Watch that Wedge
FROM this assumption it was further argued that it was equally logical to assume that, with no other prospect but that of complete defeat before them, the Germans might try to manoeuvre peace while they are still a militarily strong nation. This seems to be a fair picture of the actual prospect facing Germany to-day, and we shall not have to wait long to discover whether German high political and military policy is actually based on this formula. Signs are clearly evident, at all events, that before long new political developments of the greatest import are likely to occur.
Ever-present in the background of this war is the absolute necessity of preventing any further German attempt to dominate the world. As Mr. Bracken pointed out yesterday, Nazi successes in the negotiation of separate peace treaties would provide Germany with an opportunity once more to build up an even bigger war machine.
Hitler’s only remaining hope of escaping the consequences of his crimes against humanity is to drive a wedge between the United Nations. Fortunately, the peoples of all those nations are fully aware of the danger. There is no fear that they will fall into the trap.
PLEA FROM THE PRAMS
IT is to be hoped that, between them, the Ministry of Food and the Ministry of Health will be able to do something to relieve the present shortage of baby foods in Southampton. Official representations in regard to this matter have been going on too long Southampton parents want action – and they expect it quickly.
There is clear evidence that the shortage of essential baby foods in Southampton has become acute. The Ministries concerned must make up their minds whether the present situation is due to an actual shortage of the foods themselves or to difficulties in [missing words]
Sotonian’s D.S.O. Won Over Germany
WING COMMANDER DAVID W. DONALDSON, D.F.C., R.A.F., who attended an investiture at Buckingham Palace this week to receive the D.S.O. awarded him last May, is the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Thornycroft Donaldson, of Pear Tree-avenue, Bitterne, Southampton.
Their eldest son, Ian, is a Flying Officer in the R.A.F., and their youngest son, Norman, is a lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps.
Wing Commander Donaldson was awarded the D.F.C. in February, 1941. Since then he

has completed numerous operational sorties against heavily-defended targets in Germany and Italy.
“He has provided an outstanding example of determination and devotion to duty (stated the official citation), pressing home his attacks in the face of anti-aircraft and fighter opposition with exceptional energy and enthusiasm.
“As a pilot he displays powers of leadership and airmanship which are an example to the rest of the squadron.”
Wing Commander Donaldson’s wife and mother attended the investiture with him.
Christmas Toys
THE news of the release of toys for Christmas has given great pleasure, not only to the children, but also to the manufacturers and their agents.
Said a Winchester dealer to-day “We have got plenty of stuff in stock, and for once the Government has acted wisely in giving us a fair chance of making the distribution in ample time for Christmas shopping.”
Once before the restrictions were eased only two or three days before the holiday festival, with the result that many shopkeepers and shoppers did not get a fair chance in the scramble.
It is hoped that this time there will be ample opportunity for a fair distribution of the things that gladden the hearts of children though parents and kind-hearted uncles will still find the prices at a high level.
In Switzerland
PAYMASTER CAPT. PORTER, R.N., and Mrs. Porter, of “Maryland.” Brockenhurst, have received official intimation that their son, Major G.D. Porter, Middlesex Regiment, who escaped from the Italian prisoner of war camp PG29, has reached Switzerland safely and has been interned.
Major Porter, who was captured in North Africa, made his escape when Italy capitulated. He is one of four brothers, one of whom is fighting in Italy with the Eighth Army.
County Library
COMPLAINT has been made more than once at Hampshire County Council meetings that the general body of ratepayers have not the foggiest notion what the county library is or what it does.
In the not distant future the Council is to have a report on the library, but some light was shed on what the library does when the Education Committee chairman (Sir Samuel Gurney-Dixon) told the Council that the stock of books is 160,000, that 200,000 would still be too few to meet demands, that shortage of storage space was preventing the library expanding now, that there are 10 branch libraries and 350 distributing centres for books, scattered about the county.
He made this categorical statement: “Through the medium of the library, a copy of any book can be obtained by any ratepayer in Hampshire.”
All one has to do is to apply for a book and, if it is not in stock, the county library can draw upon the resources of regional libraries and the great national collections.

The authorised wartime strength of the force was originally 1,411, and the present actual strength is 1,022.
When the strength has been reduced to the number prescribed by the Home Secretary it is not anticipated that there will be any material change in the numbers of the senior ranks, but that the reduction will be in the number of constables.
The total pre-war authorised strength of the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Winchester police forces was 774.
Builds E.N.S.A.’s “Sets”
SERGEANT-MAJOR TOM HUDSON, who, it was reported in the “Echo” recently, is now in charge of an ENSA Middle East Works department, where he builds all ENSA’s stage sets, is the third son of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Hudson, 74, Burgess-road, Southampton, and before he joined the R.A.S.C. was in business as a sign-writer in the town.
Always very keen on painting and stage work he was at one time a student at the School of Art, and made stage sets which his wife, then Miss Winifred

He has been abroad about two years and a half. He has 20 Egyptian carpenters working under his direction in his department and can turn out anything from a full-size stage to a first-aid box.
90th Birthday in Canada
MRS. G.W. GILES, who, with her husband left Pear Tree Green for Canada 40 years ago, recently celebrated her 90th birthday at Hillside Farm, Ministik Lake District, where she is living with her daughter, Mrs. Claude Leach.
A Canadian paper describes Mrs. Giles as an “old-timer of Alberta, coming to Edmonton in the days when tents and make-shift log dwellings were the only homes.”
Among many relatives and friends at the birthday party were Mrs. Giles’ son, Percy, and Mrs. Giles, of Edmonton, and Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Giles, of Vancouver. A large cake with 90 candles graced the table. A cable of congratulation was received by Mrs. Giles from Mr. and Mrs. Tom Giles, son and daughter-in-law, of Southampton.
“Life Boat” Record
“ANOTHER magnificent record of voluntary achievement” is the congratulatory comment of the headquarters of the Royal National Life-boat Institution to the Southampton branch on their past year’s work.
The receipts for the year, £1,165 13s. 2d., were £123 3s. 4d. more than those for the previous year, and except for 1924, the centenary year of the institution, were the highest amount ever raised in a year by the branch.
The amount remitted to headquarters was £1,150, which was £150 more than in the previous year.
The Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild, in addition to helping in the record flag day collection (£966), raised £35 8s. 5d. by collections, a whist drive and a competition.
In his letter of thanks to the branch the secretary of the institution wrote: “The devotion of our honorary workers and the response of the public year after year are now almost as traditional as is the bravery of our crews. We never cease to wonder at and admire this widespread constancy of thought and action in support of our great and humane undertaking. It is such generosity that has helped us to build up the finest life-boat service in the world.’

Winchester Man in Iraq
Flight-Lieutenant Peter Edge, of the Royal Air Force Dental Branch, late of the 1st Winchester Troop of Scouts, is taking full advantage of his early training by being prepared for anything in Iraq.
At present he is employed in visiting isolated units in the Persia and Iraq command. His trips take him across hundreds of miles of sand, along dusty desert tracks marked out (if he is lucky) by old petrol tins
Summer temperatures rarely drop below the 120 mark, and in winter it is bitterly cold. It is a constant source of wonderment to the British soldier that the natives have managed to survive at all!
The Flight-Lieutenant’s father and mother live in Cromwell-road, Winchester.

In March 1945 he received a letter from his old school, the Whitgift, “...feel once again the reflected glory which we all experience in this great honour....may you be able to render further service to our country...”
This is the citation for the DSO;
Sqn. Ldr. E. J. SAUNDERS, D.F.C., R.A.F.V.R., No. 128 Sqn., These members of aircraft crew have completed very many sorties against enemy targets. On 1st January 1945, they were detailed for an operation which necessitated releasing heavy bombs from low level at openings to various tunnels on the enemy's railway system leading to the Western Front. The mission called for a high degree of skill. The good results obtained reflect the greatest credit on the efforts of the personnel mentioned, who throughout a dangerous and difficult sortie, displayed exceptional ability, great determination and devotion to duty.
From March to May 1945, he flew with 109 Operational Training Unit B Flight. Here Daddy trained further in Navigation and as an instructor. On 22nd May he got his final certificate for the Transport Operational Training Course. After this there was a gap but in July 1945 he travelled as a passenger to Marseille (Ystre), Luqua, El Adem and Cairo but we don't know why.
During August he was with 216 Squadron navigating transport flights all round the Mediterranean and further afield. He flew in Dakotas, Fairey Battles, Tiger Moths, Mosquitos and many more in 2 and 3 hour flights. They went to Almazza, Lydda, Hasbaniya, Bahrein, Shaiba, Karachi, Masira, Naples, Luqua Heliopolis, Ras El Hard, Mauripur, Khartoum, Juba, Nairobi, Durban, Zwartop. Transvaal and Rhodesia, Tanganyika and of course Wadi Halfa, Almaza and Asmara.
And so it went on into January 1946 and the end of his war. His total flying hours of 1968.55 were impressive, with daytime hours of 1194.30 and 774.25 of nightime.
[page break]
[three black and white photographs]
On the 9th of January 1946 his [sic] made his final official flight, from Luqa [sic] to Heliopolis, a flight of 6.30 hours. Below the 'Grand Total' of hours he wrote “Finis”.
By this time he had met Mummy, there are several romantic and touching notes sent to her from many far away places.
We have postcards from 1945 sent from Asmara and Malta by Daddy to Mummy and his Christmas card from 1945.
“...for though I would fly in the air as an eagle, or though I were the messenger of Jupiter, yet would I have recourse to rest with thee; and I swear by the knot of thy amiable hair, that since the first time I saw thee, I never favoured any other person...”
Sargeant [sic] Peggy Saunders had been stationed in Huntingdon, working one day in the NAAFI cinema, she had handed him his ticket!

In September Daddy moved to 128 Squadron, carrying out Operations 98 to 100 with this Light Night Striking Force. This squadron was re-formed in September 1944, at Wyton, Huntingdonshire, as a Mosquito light-bomber squadron of No. 7 (Pathfinder) Group, RAF Bomber Command. It formed part of the PFF's Fast Night Striking Force and during the remainder of the war in Europe made many nuisance raids on important industrial centres in Germany. The last operation was a 5000lb bomb over Kassel. Flying out of White Waltham. Total Flying [sic] hours to date were 828 by day and 677 by night.
In October two night raids and practises were carried out with Loran navigational aid to bombing. This meant using two transmitters and low wave frequency emissions for triangulation. An in November 'Blind Loran' navigation was used for bombing over Berlin with a 4000lb bomb. At this point he gained a 'Bar' for his DFC, recognising his length of service and number of Operations.
In December, after a year with Bomber Command, there were Operations 104 and 105. There were exercises with formation flying and low level bombing with 2 x 4000lb bombs being dropped on Duisberg and Mannheim.
Then in January 1945 came his most demanding flight. There had been a number of exercises for low level bombing and then on 1st of January there was a low level attack on a railway tunnel south of Cochem in the Moselle Valley using 1 x 4000lb bomb. For the next two weeks, over Magdeburg, they were “stoking fires of heavy attack from night before”.
Squadron Leader E J Saunders was awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 27th of February 1945.

This is Commander in Chief 'Bomber' Harris and on the 17th January 1945 he sent a telegram to Daddy, which stated.
“My warmest congratulations on the award of your Distinguished Service Order”, Air chief Marshall A t (Bomber) Harris.
Amongst the paperwork is also a note from King George VI who apologised for not being able to personally give the award.
At the end of February 1945, after 846.45 hours of daytime flying 697.15 hours by night, on this occasion Daddy signed his own logbook as Officer commanding.

In the autumn and Winter of 1938/39 we observed from the airfield boundary at Scampton, Hampden bombers landing at night using, in those days the “chance light”, which lit up the landing path when the aircraft was on the last part of the landing approach.
I thought at the time, how great it would be to handle one of these massive machines. So I joined the R.A.F.,V.R., and on 26th February, 1939 had my first flying experience in a Miles Magister initial training aircraft at Waltham, near Grimsby. It was a most exhilarating. [sic]
On the declaration of war on 3rd September, 1939 the R.A.F.,V.R., was called up for service and I was despatched to No.4 Initial Training Wing at Bexhill on Sea.
Further initial flying training was carried out at Perth and Prestwick in Scotland, followed by a period of the Advanced Training School at Sealand, Cheshire.
In July 1940 I was posted to No 14 Operational Training Unit at Cottesmore where I could now, after some further training on Ansons, be able to fly the Hampden with which I was so impressed in 1938/39.
Owing to restricted cockpit space it was not possible to have the usual duel [sic] instruction. So one went through the necessary instructions in a Hampden jacked up in a hanger with a compressor motor to activate the hydraulic systems to operate the landing gear, flaps etc.
After having done a few exercises in the hanger one was allotted an aircraft with an instructor to oversee the engines being started and the final preparations made for take off.
So finally the engines were opened up and the Hampden was eased off the ground into the air. It felt great to be airborne on a particularly fine day, being August 18th 1940.
After becoming more familiar with the aircraft “dusk and dark landings” were undertaken. Take offs and landings were carried out by “pounding the circuit”, and as the light faded and it became dark, one was then night flying.
At the beginning of November 1940 I was posted to 106 Squadron, then based at Finningly, as an operational pilot. Our first tasks were low level mining operations termed “Gardening”, at Brest, the Elb, Keil and Lorient.

on 23rd February, 1941, the Squadron moved to Coningsby which was a new airfield just opened up, near to Boston, Lincs. The operations of the Squadron now concentrated on sorties to Germany including the Rhur area.
On 4th April 1941 a low level attack was made at night against the battleships Sharnhorst and Gneisenau during a brief break in the high level bombing at the port of Brest. I had my aircraft damaged after a second attempt and I was really surprised to receive an award of the Distinguished Flying Cross which was the first decoration received by a member of 106 Squadron.
Formation bombing was practised with our Squadron Commander, Wing Commander Bob Allen, for a daylight sorties [sic] with fighter escort against the battleships at Brest. Unfortunately the three squadrons which took part suffered heavy losses.
On 12th August, 1941 a similar sortie was carried out against the Gosnay Power Station.
Wing Commander Bob Allen was a great inspiration to the crews and he was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order in August 1941.
On 3rd September, 1941, having completed my first operational tour I was posted to 14 O.T.U. Cottesmore as an operational pilot instructor and was awarded a bar to my D.F.C.
1940/41 was a period of experimental or pioneering work for the heavier onslaughts [sic] built up with the Lancaster aircraft later.
I trustvthat [sic] the foregoing gives a brief idea of the events which led up to me becoming a member of 106 Squadron, which had some excellent personnel in those days.

In the Autumn and Winter of 1938/39 we observed from the Airfield boundary at Scampton, Hampden bombers landing at night using, in those days, the “chance light”, which lit up the landing path when the aircraft was on the last part of the landing approach.
I thought at the time, how great it would be to handle one of these massive machines. So I joined the R.A.F. V.R., and on 26th February 1939 had my first flying experience in a Miles Magister initial training aircraft at Waltham, near Grimsby. It was most exhilarating.
On the declaration of war on 3rd September, 1939 the R.A.F., V.R., was called up for service and I was despatched to N0.4 Initial Training Wing at Bexhill on Sea.
Further initial flying training was carried out at Perth and Prestwick in Scotland, followed by a period at the Advanced Training School at Sealand, Cheshire.
In July, 1940 I was posted to No 14 Operational Training Unit at Cottesmore where I could now, after some further training on Ansons, be able to fly the Hampden with which I had been so impressed in 1938/39.
Owing to restricted cockpit space it was not possible to have the usual dual instruction. So one went through the necessary flying instructions in a Hampden jacked up in a hangar with a compressor motor to activate the hydraulic system to operate the landing gear, flaps etc.
After having done a few exercises in the hangar one was allotted an aircraft with an instructor to oversee the engines being started and final preparations made for take off.

Christian names THOMAS OTHER Surname PRICKETT D.F.C.
Rank SQUADRON LEADER Official Number 40427
Command or Group No. 1 GROUP Unit NO. 103 SQUADRON
Total hours flown on operations 329.34
Number of Sorties 52
Total hours flown on operations since receipt of previous award 142.04
Number of sorties since receipt of previous award 20
Recognition for which recommended D.S.O.
Appointment held FLIGHT COMMANDER
Particulars of meritorious service for which the recommendation is made:
Squadron Leader PRICKETT joined No.103 Squadron on the 8th April 1943 for his second tour, since when he has completed 20 operational sorties, comprising in all 329.34 operational flying hours. Almost all of his operational sorties have been against the most heavily defended German targets, in particular those in the RUHR.
During the whole time Squadron Leader PRICKETT has been with this Squadron he has shown the most unflinching determination and magnificent courage in the manner in which he has at all times pressed home his attacks in spite of heavy opposition and hazardous weather conditions. He has on no occasion whilst with this Squadron had an aborted sortie this successful achievement being very largely due to the superb co-operation and confidence which he has instilled in his crew together with his outstanding skill and airmanship. Throughout his second tour and particularly towards the end he has suffered from spinal arthritis, a serious handicap, especially long sorties, which he has endured uncomplainingly and with great fortitude.
As Officer Commanding “B” Flight he has displayed exceptional qualities of leadership and organizing ability and he has had a strong and valuable influence in the Squadron. By his constant cheerfulness and enthusiasm and his fine offensive spirit he has set a very high standard of morale not only in his own Flight but amongst the air and ground crews of the whole Squadron.
His keenness and cheerful devotion to duty have been of the very highest order, and in recognition of his fine record of service I have no hesitation in strongly recommending him for the immediate award of DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER.

Squadron Leader Prickett has now completed his 2nd Operational tour. During his stay with the Squadron, he has shown the highest qualities both as a Flight Commander and as captain of aircraft. he has carried out his attacks regardless of heavy opposition with undaunted courage and determination. He has been an outstanding example to the squadron and has done much to maintain morale at a high level. In the absence of the Squadron Commander at various times he has filled that post with distinction and ability. Strongly recommended for the award of Distinguished Service Order.

Pilot to Navigator - Where are we?
The Personal Account of a Wartime Navigator
Description
An account of the resource
Henry, volunteered for the RAF and learned to fly Tiger Moths at Brough. He then was transferred to South Africa on a troopship. His flying training came to an end after a poor solo flight. He was retrained as a navigator. On completion of his training he returned to the UK. After an inactive posting to Whitley Bay he was sent to West Freugh for further training. Next was an operational training unit at Abingdon, where he crewed up.
Training continued on Whitleys before a transfer to Acaster Malbis for yet more training, followed by the heavy conversion unit at Marston Moor, on Halifaxes.
His first operational posting was 51 Squadron at Snaith. He covers each operation in detail. Interspersed with the details are explanations of electronic systems and tactics used.
During one operation he was shot down and parachuted behind the German lines. Eventually he was taken prisoner, interrogated then transferred to Stalag Luft 7. As the Russians got nearer they were forced to walk west. Later they were transferred by train to Stalag IIIA.
The account then jumps to reunions in the 1980s, then returns to the last few days at the camp as the war ends.
He reached home on 15th May.
This item is available only at the International Bomber Command Centre / University of Lincoln.

Dearest David
I cannot tell you how pleased & thrilled I was when I arrived home last night & Mrs Masters said she had a message for me, but it was a nice one, and when she told me I was so afraid that she had not got it right, & whether it was a bar to the D.S.O or D.F.C & then the miserable telephone went out of order like it always does at Brambridge & so I could not ring anyone up to tell them.
But I have got hold of tonights Echo & its in there alright, and now all I want to know how does one address a D.F.C. & DSO & Bar, are you really now so grand that I merely put D.S.O etc.? I have been going round looking superciliously at everyone all day
[page break]
& thinking to myself, none of you poor things in the road have got a son who is as grand as mine, the result being that I forgot to hoot going over the bridge here & nearly had [word deleted] a collision with a car coming in the opposite direction - . I have managed to control myself all day and have not told anyone, leaving them all to see it for themselves in the Echo
Papa is up in London & the telephone having recovered I have just rung him up to tell him. He was supposed to be staying at the Goring Hotel, but when he got there they said they had to board him out & sent him on to a place in the Cromwell Rd where he found he had to share a room with a stranger & “there was no lavatory accomadation [sic] so he fled to the Aunts, who as usual acted nobly and took him in, although Eric was already

staying there . - He was duly suitably impressed & for once did not disown you & explain you were nothing to do with him, which is what he generally does if he thinks any of his family are distinguishing themselves at all.
I enquired about John Francis engagement & if it was official & ought I to write, her name is Warwick & she comes from Wickham where her father has a small business, do you think she is a relative of Rene's, she used to live at Wickham for years, they had a saddlers shop there ?
Will you thank Joyce very much for ringing me up to tell me about you, I was terribly sorry to miss her, I got caught on y way home by Mrs Heseltinne who took me in to have a drink & she
